George M. Fisher, ’76

George Marshall Fisher became a member of the S.R. House insurance agency, Painesville, in 1880; and three years later was made special agent for the North America and Pennsylvania Fire Co., with headquarters at Mansfield, O. This was a great preparation for his future work in Chicago, where he went in 1887 as special agent for the London Insurance Co., his work covering several states. In 1892 he was appointed manager of the Palatine Co. of Manchester England with jurisdiction over 14 states. He was invited by the company to visit the home office in England, during their jubilee year, and remained abroad three months. Ten years later he was chosen manager of the Railway underwriters, a syndicate of leading companies insuring railway property exclusively. Here he spent the last twenty years of his life, building up a strong organization; for he was considered an authority in his line of business. During his school days he joined the First Congregational Church of Painesville. He had a social, genial nature, and was happiest when contributing to the pleasure and comfort of others, especially that of his family. He was fond of sport, particularly golf. He passed away at his suburban home, Hinsdale, Ill. July 29, 1923. The large group of friends, who gathered at his burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville, testified to the high esteem in which George Fisher was held.
