Christopher Crary was born in New London, Conn. in 1759.
He was the grandson of Oliver Crary, who was a native of Connecticut. His great-grandfather was Robert Crary, who was a son of Peter Crary who emigrated from England to America when Charles II ascended the throne.
Christopher Crary was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was twice taken prisoner; the first time he escaped from the Halifax prison, the second time, he was imprisoned on the British prison-ship Jersey, but was finally liberated.
He was in the marine service. After the war he became a merchant, then a farmer, and exchanged his farm for land in Kirtland township.
He was the first actual settler of Kirtland; his neighbors were seven miles distant.
In 1837 he moved to Union Co., Ohio, living there until his death, which occurred in 1848 at the age of eighty-eight years.
[The biographies from this book were completely redone in 1985 by Mildred Hoyes Steed, correcting many, but not all, of the errors of the 1902 edition. It's title is Soldiers and Widows of the American Revolution who lived in Lake County, Ohio. This DAR publication is available in many local repositories. As always, it is up to the researcher to find the proofs, analyze the evidence, and draw his own conclusions.]
Karyn Van Kainen wrote, in part, regarding the 1902 biography:
The information given on Christopher Crary is incorrect. He was not "the grandson of Oliver Crary, who was a native of Connecticut." Christopher was the son of Oliver Crary (1731-1806), grandson of Robert Crary (1690-1750), and great-grandson of the patriarch of the Crary lineage in America, Peter Crary (abt 1645-1708). Also, I have been unable to find any document supporting Christopher's imprisonment aboard the "Old Jersey" prison ship, and he does not appear on the roster of Americans held aboard that ship. It is possible, however, that he was imprisoned on one of the other British prison-ships. Finally, Christopher and his wife, Mary, both died and are buried in Zane Twp., Logan county, Ohio, not in Union county.I've done extensive research on the Crary family and their descendants.
