George A. Bates, the present Recorder of Lake County, was born in Dryden, Tompkins County, New York. He accompanied his parents to Geauga County when he was five years old; thence to Lake County at the age of fifteen, where he has resided for the past forty years. He has filled the office abovementioned for several terms, being first elected in 1908 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of F. G. Salkeld. He was nrst (first) official stenographer for the County Courts, which position he filled for several years, also serving as Mayor and Councilman of the City of Painesville and ever active in matters pertaining to the welfare of the County. At one time he served as Secretary of the Old County Fair for five years and was the original promoter of the New County Fair of which he was secretary until the close of his first exhibition.
