Early Settlers from the Ohio Register 1812-1813

Early Settlers Page (Johann Kohlmann)

Submitted by Angela Sherman

Johann Kohlmann was born 15 Nov 1816 in Altmorschen Hesse Germany. He married 12 May 1842 in Germany, Dorothea Bier; born 26 June 1817, also of Altmorschen. They came to Sandusky Ohio in 1851.With them, came three daughters; Anna Margaretha, Martha Elizabeth, and Katharina.

Johann, who changed his name to John Kollman, perhaps to be more " American ", was a stone-cutter by trade- a masonary. He provided for the family and made sure the children attended Church on Sunday. The family attended the First Reformed Church which is now the First United Church of Christ at the corner of Jefferson and Hancock.

John and Dora had three more children; Elizabeth, Phillip, and Annie. John began to teach his only son, Phillip, the trade of stone-cutting. Phillip turned this knowledge into his company, P.H. K and Sons. Phillip passed this trade onto his two sons, and they changed the name to Kollman Brothers.

John lived a long, hard life. He passed on a trade that lasted well over a hundred years. He passed away 18 May 1887. He is buried in Oakland cemetery with the family. Dora, his wife, passed away 10 Dec 1900.

I have a web site on James Pearl/Perrill and descendants at:

There are guardianship papers on James Perrill in Knox Co. 1821. James married Elizabeth Berry in Knox Co but later moved to Andrew Co., Missouri and in 1852, to Linn Co. Oregon.

Early Settlers Page (Stacy Elicot Templer and Mary Berry)

Please be advised that we have family in Knox County, OH in the very early years.

My gg-grandparents, Stacy Elicot Templer and Mary Berry were married in Knox County, OH, on 5 November 1835. Stacy was travelling west with his parents, Thomas Templer and Jane Lowe Templer, and apparently stopped long enough to get acquainted with Mary Berry. Thomas Templer's brother, James Templer is found in the 1830 US Census (M19, Roll 134, page 49-338) in Union Township, Knox County, OH. Nearby are two Berry families and it is believed that one of those families is that of Mary Berry although we have yet to figure out which one.

Another of Thomas Templer's brothers, Stacey Templer and his wife, Rachel Pettit was in Greene County, OH, from 1810 through 1860. In the 1830 Census (M19, Roll 131, page 315) they are in Caesars Township. That branch of the family spent many years in OH and have many descendants with OH roots.

Thanks for your efforts,
Charles E. Templer
