June 2, 1917 - July 3, 2020
James M. Schatz, 103, Sandusky, passed away early Friday morning at the Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness. Jim was born on June 2, 1917 in Sandusky to the late Earl and Lena (Ehrhardt) Schatz.
Jim was a 1936 graduate of Sandusky High School, and attended the University of Toledo. He retired from the Ford Motor Company in 1979 after 30 years of service.
He was a member of the Castalia Congregational United Church of Christ, VFW post 2529, Sandusky Eagles #444, and the UAW Local #913. In his spare time Jim enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, being outdoors, golfing, bowling, traveling, and spending time on the lake in his Lyman. He was a fountain of knowledge of Sandusky history. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his children Sandie Wilson of Frederick, MD, and Gary (Eva) Schatz of Mineral, VA, six grandchildren; Charles (Sherry) Wilson, Kristin (Ken) Raker, Laura (Ryan) Crim, Carl Schatz, Ingrid (Ed) Lahmann and Lena Schatz, 9 great-grandchildren; his long time loving companion Teresa Oglesbee, of Castalia, OH, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives including his caretaker Peggy Pfeiffer.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Irene (Sharp) Schatz in 1993, and his sisters Helen Miller, Marian Shadle, Lois Weis and Merle Williams.
Friends may call on Tuesday July 7, 2020 from 4-7 PM in the Groff Funeral Home and Crematory 1607 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 8, 2020 at 10:30 AM in the Funeral Home. The Pastor John Paputza will officiate.
Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family respectfully requests all in attendance wear a mask.
