September 14, 1940 - June 18, 2019
David E. Mehling, 78, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, June 18, 2019 at Firelands Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.
David was born September 14, 1940 in Fremont, OH to the late Norbert F. and Eugenie (Eberhart) Mehling.
Dave is a 1958 graduate of St. Mary's High School and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2012. He attended Bowling Green State University for two years and served in the Army Reserves for six years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus 546. Dave was a Director for the Amvet Little League Baseball League and served for over 30 years in various positions. He also piloted the Cliff's Ramblers, which was a traveling baseball team.
He was formerly employed by WLKR Radio Station, which he and other investors purchased. In 1975, he became general manager at WLEC Radio Station and worked in the radio industry for over 50 years. Many Friday and Saturday nights, his voice could be heard broadcasting games with Mark Fogg and other members of the crew. Dave has also served on many other civic and recreational groups throughout his lifetime.
Dave is survived by his wife, Karen A. (Klepper) Mehling, whom he married on February 18, 1964. His five children, Christopher J. (Kimberly) Mehling of Lakewood, Cynthia S. (Peter) Ostheimer of Findlay, Jeff D. (Alaina) Mehling, Matthew D. Mehling and Melissa M. (Jonathan) Kaufman all of Sandusky; grandchildren, Kylie and Peyton Ostheimer both of Findlay, Ashley and Jackson Kaufman and Maggie Mehling all of Sandusky; brother, Douglas (Barb) Mehling of South Bass Island and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dave has always been a person who loved people. He loved organizing events that would help a good cause or something that would get people together just to have fun. He especially enjoyed working with young people involved in sports. He was an avid Indians fan and most especially the biggest fan of anything his kids or grandkids were involved in.
Anyone who knew Dave, knew he loved to talk. It didn't matter if you were a friend or a stranger. He always would carry on a conversation with you. His love of people never stopped, especially for the members and friends of his class of '58, or more recently call the "The 58 Dockers." Many Tuesday nights were spent down at the Jackson Street Pier just doing what he loved - talking.
Dave will be missed by many, especially his family. He was a very devoted husband, father and Papa. We will never forget him and all that he did for us. As an old song goes, "I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places that this heart of mine embraces all day through." This is how we will remember you until we meet again. We love you.
