Karl was born March 11, 1914, in Sandusky.Karl graduated from Sandusky High School in 1932. He attended Miami of Ohio University and the School of Drama in Cincinnati. He was employed as a radio and television broadcaster until his retirement from WLEC, in Sandusky, in 1992.
As a broadcaster, he had worked in Cleveland, Washington, D.C., Akron and Youngstown. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in Akron in 1984. He was a member of the Sandusky Rotary Club, where he served a time as president and was awarded the club’s highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellow award.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marguerite L.; sons, Karl J. Bates Jr. of Huron; daughter, Bonnie Bates of Sandusky; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl T. and Ruby (nee Apple) Bates; and sister, Virginia B. Cockrem in 1995.
