Funeral Home Records

An important source of family information can be the records usually kept by Funeral Directors. These records, created by private businesses are not public records. The only records funeral directors are required to keep are financial. However, most do keep their old records for other family members requiring services. Records are usually filed chronologically, not by surname, and are rarely indexed, so when requesting assistance, have a death date handy.

Historically, funerals were conducted in the home. "Undertakers" were so called because they undertook the duties necessary to help the family. He may have put a death wreath on the door, helped prepare the body, provided transportation for the body and perhaps the family. He may have made the casket, etc. Often the undertaker was the local furniture maker who also made the caskets or a livery owner as he would have transportation for the situation. Later funeral directors provided ambulance services because the hearses could serve dual purposes. More recently funeral directors are schooled and licensed. Some do their own embalming, others hire contract embalmers.

Records kept by funeral homes usually consist of the same information as a death certificate might have, as one of their services is to fill out that certificate. They also usually submit an obituary or death notice to the newspapers. Information beyond that might include the type of casket, flowers ordered, who paid for the services, who officiated, and the cemetery. Rarely do they have the exact lot of the burial. Sometimes they help with monument purchase or provide them.

One of the difficulties locating records occurs when funeral homes close. The records may go to a purchaser, be deposited at a historical society, or they may be destroyed. Therefore the "genealogy" of the homes can be important and some information is presented below to help with locating your ancestor's funeral home records.
