William Malin

William Malin served in the Revolutionary War. Records from VA state: "Council
Chamber February 2, 1785 - I do certify, that William Malin is entitled to
the proportion of land allowed a Private of the State line, fro three years
service." Signed P. Henry and Thos Meriwether. Warrant for 100 acres issued
to the above February 3, 1785 (Ref. No 3730)
According to family history William was disowned by the Quakers for fighting
in the Revolutionary War. It was also stated that he was of Welsh decent.
At one time William Malin lived in Charlestown, Frederick Co., VA where he
signed the indenture papers in November of 1808 for his son Joseph, bounding
him to Samuel Russell to learn the trade of saddle maker.
From Charlestown William moved to Urbana, Champaign Co., Ohio, living there
until his death on 7 August, 1818. His first wife was Esther Berry and nothing
is known of her other then she was the mother of his children: Jacob, Joseph,
Mahlon and Mary.
William married Vashi Sharp on 18 July 1816 in Champaign Co. Ohio.

Co. OH, Adm on the estate of Joshua Malin dec was granted to William Malin
who together with Joseph Hedges and Joseph Malin his surety gave bond in
the sum of four hundred dollars for his faithful administration and John
Gutridge, Zephinah Lesse and Joseph Law an appoints(?) appraisers to said
estate. Would probably be related somehow-cousin?

William Rhodes Ancestor of Carl Rhodes
William Rhodes was born about 1745, probably in Virginia. On September 1st, 1775 at Alexandria, Virginia he enlisted as a private soldier in the 2nd Virginia Regiment. His tour of duty took him from as far north as New York, and as far south as Georgia. In 1778 William was chosen to be in the Light Infantry Company of his regiment. The men in these companies where hand picked from each regiment, and were the best soldiers in their unit. He was promoted to corporal in 1779. William fought in most of the major battles of the Revolution, along was a number of untold skirmishes. Corporal Rhodes was wounded many times in battle, five times severely. William Rhodes was discharged in Richmond, Virginia, about July 3, 1783 after nearly seven years of loyal service to his country. He in time received five hundred sixteen & 2/3-acres land for his service.
William Rhodes married Susannah ________ not long after the war; they lived in Pennsylvania for a time, then moved to Mason Co., Kentucky about 1790. William, Susannah and their family may have moved to Ohio in about 1800; on December 31, 1804 while William was living in Greene Co. Ohio, he made his first payment on 160-acres land just south of present day Urbana.

William died on Aug 22, 1825. Captain Ambrozene's volunteer company buried him with full military honors. General Vance honored him with a lengthy, heartfelt epitaph dedicated to William's military career.
