- The Society for the Preservation of Ohio One Room Schools, Larry Helton
I founded the Society for the Preservation of Ohio One Room Schools in 1993. I have documented over 800 early schools and photographed nearly 700 of those. I focus on schools built prior to 1901, and those after that date that are one room or exhibit early architecture. I publish a newsletter four times a year. The membership dues are only $2.00 a year, which includes the newsletter and an open invitation to any speaking engagement we , my wife and I, are invited to. Aside from the schools, I document and research mills, covered bridges, round barns, train depots, log structures, Indian sites, Daniel Boone sites, and Simon Kenton sites. I also have a large collection of local history books that I can look up information in, with an emphasis on the following communities: Middletown, Trenton, West Middletown, Monroe, Hamilton, Jacksonburg, Seven Mile, and the Townships of Lemon, Madison, and Jefferson Twp., which is in Montgomery County. I do not however collect books on cemetary listings or other personal records of Butler
County. If anyone wishes to become a member of S.P.O.O.R.S., send $2.00 cash, check, or money order payable to J. Larry Helton, Jr., 6570 Crest Circle , W. Middletown, Ohio 45042. -- Larry Helton
- VAN LUE, VAN LIEW, VAN LIEU Cemetery. Tom Witt (Apr 14 1998). I live very close to the VanLue (aka Van Liew or Van Lieu) cemetary just outside of Shandon Ohio on Kirchling Road (Ross area, in Butler County). Not sure if this is a well-known plot or not, but I'd be willing to help others with info if I can. The plot is somewhat secluded, quite small and a bit run-down. I've found very little information related to it. I suspect that it may not be very well-known. The burial dates are from the early to late 1800s (some may actually be as new as the early 1900s). I've noticed quite a few different spellings of "VanLue" but for the mostpart, the gravesight is 75% "VanLue" although it looks like the county has named it the "Van Liew" cemetary.
- "History of the Presbyterian Church of Oxford 1818-1825-1900", Patrick R. Nelson, Ph.D. (12/31/97)
I live in Oxford (but have no ancestors from the area) and acquired the book "History of the Presbyterian Church of Oxford 1818-1825-1900" in a lot of books at an auction. The book was published in 1902. The book lists
pastors through the years with brief biographies and photos as well as their wives, contributors, committee members, "daughters of the church," "home" and foreign missionaries for the church, elders, directors, deacons and trustees of the church. Included are prominent Oxfordians such as Robert Bishop (1st Miami President), several Kumlers, and President Benjamin Harrison. I am willing to do look-ups. Pat prnelson@one.net
