Susannah Reed
Be it remembered that in the 23rd day of October A. D. 1837, the last will and testament of Susannah REED "dec" was produced in open court and proved by the office of John STILL and Washington CAMPBELL the enscribing witnesses thereto which will together with the proof was ordered by the court to be recorded. Said will is in the words following, to wit "In the name of God Amen I Susannah REED of the County of Brown and the State of Ohio being sickund in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of allmighty God and my body to the Earth to be decently buried and after my debts and funeral charges are paid I desire and bequeath as follows
First I will and bequeath to Ruth McDANIEL wife of Benjamin McDANIEL and his son Abram all of the County of Brown and State of Ohio an iron grey filly two years old and to Rachel McDANIEL daughter of Ruth McDANIEL one red cow now in the possession of Benjamin McDANIEL marked with a crop of the left ear one cherry cupboard now in the possession of said Benjamin McDANIEL to their daughter Susannah McDANIEL
Second I will and bequeath to Samuel REED my oldest son of the County of Brown and State of Ohio one white salem mare one twenty gallon kettle now at Eli REEVES one large stew kettle now at Lewis EVANS and large dutch oven Third I will and bequeath to Barnet M REED of the County of Brown and State of Ohio my iron grey Nell mare one twenty gallon kettle now at Lewis Evans and one ten gallon kettle now at John EDMISTONS one skillet. fourth my bed and bedding to be equally divided between my two sons Samuel and Barnet one black & blue coverlet for Samuel one with white in for Barnet one set of plow irons hoes now at Benjamin McDANIELS now at Benjamin McDANIELS for my two sons Samuel fifth I will and bequeath to my daughter Dorcus REED of the County of Brown and State of Ohio on dinner stew kettle now at Lewis EVANS and small wash kettle at John EDMISTONS one tea kettle and skillet at John EDMISTONS and griddle during his lifetime now at Do Do one small pot at the same place
Six I will to Lydia LUMBACK my daughter of the State of Ohio Martha EVANS wife of Lewis EVANS of the State of Ohio Brown County Rebecca REEVES wife of Asa REEVES of the State of Indiana Mary EDMISTON wife of John EDMISTON of the County of Brown Stae of Ohio Angelina REEVES wife of Eli REEVES of the County of Brown and State of Ohio the above named females I will to each of them one dollar in cash Seventh after my funeral expense and all my debts are paid I will and bequeath to my two sons Samuel and Barnet M REED all the money there may be left with a black mare mare now in the possession of Benjamin McDANIEL the above bequeaths are to them and their heirs forever and ever
In testimony whereof I Susannah REED have to this my will consisting of one leaf of paper set my hand and seal at the bottom of this 27 day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven.

Signed sealed published by Susannah REED the above named Testator as and for her last will and testament in the presence of us who at her request and in her presence have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto

Personally appeared in open court John STILL and Washington CAMPBELL who deposeth and saith that they subscribed the last will and testament of Susannah REED Dec'd as Witnesses that they did it at her request and in presence of said testator made her mark to said Will as her last will and testament was of sound mind and memory and above twenty one years of age at the time of making her mark to said Will and under no legal restraint at the time.

Note: This copy of the will of Susannah REED is found in Will Book One on pages 383-384 and 385. It should be noted that there are two copies of Will Book One. Both have entries made by hand, but this version is much easier to decipher than the other one. I copied this will as best I could exactly as entered...with original [almost nonexistent] punctuation. To me it appears that from her wording, Susannah knew Lydia LUMBACK [sic] was in the state of Ohio, but not in which county [Lydia was in Lawrence County as was Joseph, her husband. Lydia REED and Joseph LUNBECK'S daughter Susan LUNBECK married Samuel Q. EDMONSON, son of John EDMISTON and Mary "Polly" REED. Samuel Q. EDMONSON and Susan LUNBECK'S son Edward Montgomery EDMONSON b. 5 Jul 1861 is my gtgtgrandfather.
