Descendants of Solomon Waterman

Generation No. 1

1.  SOLOMON1 WATERMAN1 was born 08 Oct 1785 in Pennsylvania or Maryland, and died 16 Mar 1850 in Clermont County, Ohio.  He married ELLENA FRITZ 23 Mar 1813 in Mount Orab, Clermont County, Ohio married by Edward M. Geisler, minister.  She was born 07 Feb 1793 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died 25 Oct 1868 in Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio.

Notes for SOLOMON WATERMAN:

Text of research of Eleanor Brucken of 68145 Somerset Drive, Brecksville, Ohio  44141  which I received from the Brown County Genealogical Society.

"There may be no Watermans presently living in Brown County, but descendants with other surnames still remain in Brown County.  SOLOMON WATERMAN and ELLENA FRITZ (FRETTS?) were married in Clermont County on 23 March 1813.  This couple settled around Georgetown and were on early Brown County taxpayers lists, as well as the U.S. Censuses from 1820 - 1850.  Waterman was an early property owner, buying 139 acres of Survey No. 7593 of GENERAL ROBERT LAWSON, before 1819.  Lawson owned 2000 acres by Georgetown but he never settled this land.  According to tombstone records, SOLOMON WATERMAN died on 16 March 1850.  His widow then married JOHN SLADE on 19 May 1853 in Brown County.  She died on 25 Oct 1868 in Georgtown and was buried with Waterman.  Her official married record originally states FRITZ is her maiden name.  Her son, NELSON, who may have placed the information about himself and his parents in an earlier 1883 Brown County history book, gives her maiden name as FREDERICK, while another descendant told a researcher it was FRALICH (FRAELICH, FROLICH?).  ELLEN / ELEANOR was born 7 Feb. 1793, possibly in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  SOLOMON was born 7 or 25 Oct. 1785, possibly in Pennsylvania or Maryland.  SOLOMON and ELLEN WATERMAN have been accepted in the First Families of Ohio Association of the Ohio Genealogical Society.  SOLOMON and ELLEN's children were:

1.   PETER WILFORD WATERMAN, carpenter, dentist and assistant assessor of revenue, born ca. 1815 and married 18 May 1851 to CHRISTENE HEIZER / HIZER.  Some of their descendants were ELIZABETH, SAMUEL J., CARR W. (married MINNIE LINE), SOLOMON J., and ALBERT S. WATERMAN.

"FANNY" RATCHFORD (12 Jan. 1841 - 1914),  Descendants of NELSON and BARBARA were CAROLINE WILSON (WILLIAM WALTER PARKER), MARION HELEN (MARSHALL PIERCE), JOHN D. WHITE WILSON, AMANDA ANN (married WATERS - descendants moved to Texas), SANDERS J. (HANNA KRATZLER).  The WATERMAN - RATCHFORD descendants were CLAUDE NELSON (ELLA M. C, 59 Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  His wife died while he was in the service.  Their Egbert children were JEROME BUCKNER EGBERT (Hospital steward in Civil War, 97th Ohio Infantry), GORIDON / GORDON T. EGBERT, SOLOMON W. (MARGARET) EGBERT, ANN EGBERT (JOHN W. BURDETT of Iowa, Illinois).  Other descendants: IRMA BURDETT COLE (Chicago), RHODA EGBERT, BURDETT J. EGBERT, HELEN M. EGBERT, HELEN M. General.  His two children, who probably did not have descendants were ANNA A. WHITE and STEPHEN / STEVENSON G. WHITE.  ANN is known to have been "dwarfed in mind and body" and no records on STEPHEN have been found.  The only child with known descendants was ULYSSES G. GRANT WHITE, b. 1848/49, d. 10 Nov. 1917 Georgetown, OH.  He married LOUISA CARTER MYERS first and then BETTY STEPHEN of Georgetown.  His descendants from the marriage with LOUISA MYERS were IDA CARR (PARKER, Clearwater, FL) and NELLIE CARR (PERRY, New York City) and MARGARET PERRY.  U.S.G. WHITE served as an officer in both the army and navy and served at Boston Navy Yard, Norfolk Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, and Puget Sound.  He supervised construction of the largest dry dock of its time at Puget Sound and he was engaged and in charge of establishing and building a naval station at Pearl Harbor.

Notes for AUGUSTUS TAYLOR DYE:

HIstory of Madison County, Indiana Vol. 2, by John L. Forkner, pages 407 -409

"AUGUSTUS T. DYE.    A former county recorder and one of the most popular men in public affairs in Madison county, Mr. Dye has a prominent place in financial circles of Anderson, being assistant secretary and treasurer of the Farmer's Trust Company, of which he was the original organizer.  The Farmer's Trust Company is one of the most substantial organizations of its kind in this section of the state and among its directors are many of the reliable business men and well known citizens of both Anderson and the surrounding country.

The career of Augustus T. Dye began in Clermont county, Ohio, where he was born July 27, 1864, belonging to an old family of that state.  His grandfather was James Dye, a pioneer of Ohio.  The father was Francis M. Dye, who was born in Ohio and for many years an attorney.  His death occurred during the year 1866, after four years service in U.S. Army.  He married Miss Amanda Manchester, who was born in Kentucky, a daughter of Hiram Manchester and grand-daughter of Chas. C. Manchester,  who began his career as a minister in his eighteenth year and was widely known among the early settlers of Ohio as a preacher, living to the advanced age of eighty years.  On the mother's side another ancestor, through a collateral branch, was Roger Williams, the noted character of early New England history, who in order to attain freedom of worship, according to his own ideas, left the old Massachusetts colony, and settled in Rhode Island where he gathered about him a small congregation and founded what was known as Providence and Rhode Island plantation.  Mrs. Amanda Dye is still living in Hamersville, Ohio, and was the mother of two children.

Augustus T. Dye spent his early boyhood on a farm in Ohio, and attended both the common and high schools in Felicity, Ohio, until completing his education in the high school.  He then returned to the farm and engaged in its various duties until he was twenty-one years of age.  His experience since that time has connected him with the larger phases of business life.  He spent two and a half years as traveling salesman in Ohio, and then came to Anderson, where he followed various lines of employment.  His popularity as a citizen in 1898 resulted in his election to the office of county recorder, and he gave four years of faithful and intelligent service in that capacity.  He was a Republican and had the distiction of being the only candidate on the Republican ticket who was successful in that election.  On the expiration of his term of office as recorder he spent three years in the merchantile business and then with others as his associates, organized the Farmer's Trust Bank.  On the organization of this well known financial enterprise he was made assistant secretary and treasurer and has held those offices ever since.

Mr. Dye was first married to Miss Anna Ayres, daughter of William and Nancy Ayres.  The three children born to this union were: Harvey, now an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, with headquarters in Indianapolis; Lula, graduate of the high school and a teacher of music; and Stella, now a student in the high school in Anderson.  The mother of these children died on April 22, 1899.  Mr. Dye subsequently married Miss Lida Brooks, of Anderson, a daughter of E.A. and Catherine Brooks.  Mrs. Dye before her marriage was for seven years a teacher in the schools of Anderson and is remembered as one of the most efficient and popular in the profession at the time. Mr. Dye has membership in Fellowship Lodge No. 681, A.F. & A.M., Anderson Chapter No. 52 R.A.M., Anderson Commandery No. 32, K.T., Indianapolis Consistory, has attained thirty-two degrees of the Scottish Rite Masonry, and is a member of Murat Temple of the Mystic Shrine in Indianapolis.  His other fraternal affiliations are with the Elks Lodge No. 209 at Anderson.  His residence in Anderson is at 920 West Fifth Street."

RESEARCHER'S NOTE:  There are several incorrect facts in this article for whatever reason.  First, Augustus T. Dye's father was Wilford Marion Dye.  I have determined that Wilford Marion Dye was still alive in 1867 when he married Catherine Heavner in Pike County, IL, while he was still married to Amanda Manchester.  Amanda divorced Wilford in Brown County, OH in 1869.  Nor have I found any connection with the maternal family to Roger Williams, but they are descended from George Soule of the Mayflower.  Amanda Manchester re-married in 1869 to Francis Marion Tatman and had several more children by him.  It is possible that Harvey Dye, Augustus' son, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, but I know that he was working as a file hardner at the file works at the time of the 1920 census.  - Frances Dye Minchew  12/5/03
