1. JOHN
D.6 DYE (JAMES5
DEY, JOHN LAURENS4, HANS LAURENTSZEN3 DUYTS,
LAURENS2, RICHARD?1) was born 31 Oct
1753 in Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died 23 Apr 1836 in
Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio1. He married RUTH APPLEGATE 06 Apr 1779 in
Elizabeth, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, daughter of WILLIAM APPLEGATE and SARAH
WIGGINS. She was born 1761 in Princeton,
Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died Abt. 1840 in
Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio.
Notes for JOHN D. DYE:

the Brown County Historical Society.
"JOHN DYE.
The stone marker shown below was placed there by the Taliaferro Chapter
of the Daughters of the American Revolution, April 26, 1936. This marker depicts the location of the grave
of John Dye. Just one hundred years
after his death, 1836, this impressive ceremony took place. (Location of marker is at the corner of Day
Hill and Arnheim - St. Rt. 125)
John Dye, the son of James and Sarah (Leach) Dye, was
born in Middlesex County, NJ. He
enlisted at Allegheny County, PA. for a three-year term of service in Capt.
Kilgore's Co., Colonel Brodhead's 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental
Army. He was engaged with the
Continental troops at the Battle of Saratoga, one of the 15 decisive battles of
the war. He was discharged in the fall
of 1779 in Elizabethtown, PA. Soon after
that he married Ruth Applegate, April 6, 1779, the daughter of Wiliam and Ruth (Wiggins) Applegate of Allegheny County,
PA.
John and Ruth, along with other pioneers, started for
the western lands, coming down the Ohio River amd
settled first in Bracken County, KY. A
daughter, Elizabeth, was born, and married Joseph Brannon. She died soon after the second child was
born, and the grandparents, John and Ruth, brought them to Ohio with the other
members of the family. They were: Sarah,
married Isaac Day; Rachel Amanda, married John Day; Hannah, married Christopher
Day; William, married first Elizabeth Redman and married two more time; and
James, married Nancy Ellis.
The family settled in a log house which they built,
and the chimney for many years stood guard over the quiet Straight Creek
valley, just as John's grave does today at the corner of St. Rt. 125 and Arnheim Day Hill Road.
Two of his wife's sisters married Revolutionary soldiers - Edward Evans
and Robert Wright. These two families
settled in the vicinity also.
John Dye established himself as a high-type citizen,
taking an active part in the upbuilding of his
immediate neighborhood, as a prominent member of the Methodist Church. He assisted in constructing the first hewed
log house of worship built on Hillman Ridge in 1812.
In the DAR ceremony, Mr. Fern Baird, of Russellville,
represented the family in presenting a sketch of John Dye's life and service,
and discussed the difference in civic values that have arisen since the
pioneers opened this locality to settlement.
Mr. Baird, along with the descendants and those holding standards of
civic values, would also be shocked to learn that John Dye's grave was opened
and vandalized recently (1991).
Therefore, it is with deepest respect that space is
given for such a pioneer, who no doubt fought for our freedom alone at times,
braved the wilderness to clear land for his family, buried alone - but happy
that he could rest and watch the fruits of his work progress with his family
members who have continued to live on his farm. " Submitted by Dorothy Helton.

"John Dye was born in 1754 in Middlesex County,
New Jersey, the son of James Dey and Sarah
Leach. The two primary sources exist
from the information which follows:
1. THE
APPLEGATE FAMILY IN AMERICA produced by Hugh Vorees. Follow the line 5F. The Applegate children noted in the following
are descendants of Benjamin Applegate.
2. HISTORICAL
COLLECTIONS OF BROWN COUNTY, OHIO by Thompson,
published in 1968.
John Dye would have been about 10 years old when his
father died. Little is known about
John's early life. He was a soldier in
the Revolutionary War and served with General George Washington as a part of
the Pennsylvania Line, 11th Infantry.
The commander was Captain Samuel Dawson in Colonel Richard Humphrey's
Regiment. He applied for and received a
pension (number 2344) on July 22, 1819 in Brown County, Ohio. He died on April 23, 1836 in Brown County,
Ohio and is buried on the old Day farm, 3 miles east of Georgetown at the
intersection of State Road 125 and the Georgetown - Arnheim
Road in Pleasant Township. A U.S.
Government marker was placed there by his descendants and a dedication service
was held on the 100th anniversary of his death, April 23, 1936.
In an application for membership to the DAR, John
Dye's service record was noted as follows.
Served as a private in Captain David Kilgore's company, Colonel Daniel Braidhead's 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, was in both battles
of Stillwater and served in Morgan's Rigle Regiment
and several other battles.
He married Ruth Applegate (5F3B in Voorhees System),
born 1761 in Middlesex Co., NJ. She died
c.1840 in Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio.
They were married on Apr. 6, 1779 in Elizabeth, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. They
moved c. 1785 to Mason Co., Ky
where they stayed several years before moving to Illinois. They didn't stay very long before returning
to Kentucky. They moved to Brown Co.,
Ohio c. 1795 and lived near her sister's family, the Evans family."

Notes for AUGUSTUS TAYLOR DYE:
HIstory of Madison County,
Indiana Vol. 2, by John L. Forkner, pages 407 -409
"AUGUSTUS T. DYE. A former county recorder and one of the
most popular men in public affairs in Madison county, Mr. Dye has a prominent
place in financial circles of Anderson, being assistant secretary and treasurer
of the Farmer's Trust Company, of which he was the original organizer. The Farmer's Trust Company is one of the most
substantial organizations of its kind in this section of the state and among
its directors are many of the reliable business men and well known citizens of
both Anderson and the surrounding country.
The career of Augustus T. Dye began in Clermont county, Ohio, where he was born July 27, 1864, belonging to
an old family of that state. His
grandfather was James Dye, a pioneer of Ohio.
The father was Francis M. Dye, who was born in Ohio and for many years
an attorney. His death occurred during
the year 1866, after four years service in U.S. Army. He married Miss Amanda Manchester, who was
born in Kentucky, a daughter of Hiram Manchester and grand-daughter of Chas. C.
Manchester, who
began his career as a minister in his eighteenth year and was widely known
among the early settlers of Ohio as a preacher, living to the advanced age of
eighty years. On the mother's side
another ancestor, through a collateral branch, was Roger Williams, the noted
character of early New England history, who in order to attain freedom of
worship, according to his own ideas, left the old Massachusetts colony, and
settled in Rhode Island where he gathered about him a small congregation and
founded what was known as Providence and Rhode Island plantation. Mrs. Amanda Dye is still living in Hamersville, Ohio, and was the mother of two children.
Augustus T. Dye spent his early boyhood on a farm in
Ohio, and attended both the common and high schools in Felicity, Ohio, until
completing his education in the high school.
He then returned to the farm and engaged in its various duties until he
was twenty-one years of age. His experience
since that time has connected him with the larger phases of business life. He spent two and a half years as traveling
salesman in Ohio, and then came to Anderson, where he followed various lines of
employment. His popularity as a citizen
in 1898 resulted in his election to the office of county recorder, and he gave
four years of faithful and intelligent service in that capacity. He was a Republican and had the distiction of being the only candidate on the Republican
ticket who was successful in that election.
On the expiration of his term of office as recorder he spent three years
in the merchantile business and then with others as
his associates, organized the Farmer's Trust Bank. On the organization of this well known
financial enterprise he was made assistant secretary and treasurer and has held
those offices ever since.
Mr. Dye was first married to Miss Anna Ayres,
daughter of William and Nancy Ayres. The
three children born to this union were: Harvey, now an employee of the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company, with headquarters in Indianapolis; Lula,
graduate of the high school and a teacher of music; and Stella, now a student
in the high school in Anderson. The
mother of these children died on April 22, 1899. Mr. Dye subsequently married Miss Lida Brooks, of Anderson, a daughter of E.A. and Catherine
Brooks. Mrs. Dye before her marriage was
for seven years a teacher in the schools of Anderson and is remembered as one
of the most efficient and popular in the profession at the time. Mr. Dye has
membership in Fellowship Lodge No. 681, A.F. & A.M., Anderson Chapter No. 52
R.A.M., Anderson Commandery No. 32, K.T., Indianapolis Consistory, has attained thirty-two degrees of
the Scottish Rite Masonry, and is a member of Murat
Temple of the Mystic Shrine in Indianapolis.
His other fraternal affiliations are with the Elks Lodge No. 209 at
Anderson. His residence in Anderson is
at 920 West Fifth Street."
RESEARCHER'S NOTE:
There are several incorrect facts in this article for whatever
reason. First, Augustus T. Dye's father
was Wilford Marion Dye. I have determined that Wilford
Marion Dye was still alive in 1867 when he married Catherine Heavner in Pike County, IL, while he was still married to
Amanda Manchester. Amanda divorced Wilford in Brown County, OH in 1869. Nor have I found any connection with the
maternal family to Roger Williams, but they are descended from George Soule of the Mayflower.
Amanda Manchester re-married in 1869 to Francis Marion Tatman and had several more children by him. It is possible that Harvey Dye, Augustus'
son, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, but I know that he was
working as a file hardner at the file works at the
time of the 1920 census. - Frances Dye Minchew 12/5/03
