YEAGER, Peter
submitted by Patricia A. McCarty
Peter Yeager was born 16 Apr 1866 in Johns Hill, Wilder, Campbell County, KY, the sone of Nicholaus Joerger/Yeager and Louisa Kneipp. Peter's parents were both born in the area of Baden, Germany which is located in the Black Forest. They both emigrated to America about 1849-1851 and their families settled in Johns Hill, Wilder, Campbell County, KY. Nicholaus was a farmer and Peter followed in his footsteps. They attended St. John's Catholic Church and were staunch Catholics. On 20 Jul 1887 Peter married Josephine Ernsterhoff, daughter of John Ernsterhoff and Mary Fabry, at St. John's Church. All seven of their children were born in Johns Hill and baptised at St. Johns: Josephine, George, Francis, Mary, Louise, Theresa and Barbara. About 1909 Peter and his family moved to Fayetteville, Brown County, OH where Peter took up farming again. Peter's parents stayed in Johns Hill and lived the rest of their lives there. They are both buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Nicholaus in 1904 and Louisa in 1917. Peter and Josephine bought land in the country outside Fayetteville and lived there for several years. Then they sold that property and moved in closer to town. Their farmhouse was a two story brick house. As Peter was clearing the land to plant his crops, he picked up the stones in the field and placed them into a sack that he always carried hanging from his shoulder. When he had gathered enough stones, he built a porch on the house that went from the front all the way around one side of the house. He also built a stone sentinal at each side of the entry of the driveway. He had also gathered enough stones to build the double tombstone where they would later be buried. Josephine died in 1941 and Peter died in 1942 and they were laid to rest in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fayetteville, Brown County, OH. Several other members of their family were buried there too. Some of their children chose to migrate to other areas west and north. One of Peter and Josephine's sons, Francis Herman (Frank) Yeager was born 7 Feb 1893 (my direct line). After the family moved to Fayetteville, he met Genevieve Alice (Gen) Gavey, daughter of John Gavey and Louise Brazille. Gen was born 7 Jul 1899 outside of Fayetteville in the country. Her father was a farmer and the fanily were also staunch Catholics. Frank, Gen, and other young people in the area attended the barn dances. They didn't worry if they fell asleep on the way home because the horses knew the way and would get them home safely. Many years later Gen told many stories about her growing up times and the grandchildren alwasy pestered her to tell more and more. Frank and Gen and a few other members of their families moved to Dayton, Montgomery County, OH and they were married 20 Feb 1919 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dayton. Frank was a carpenter and got a job at a large construction company and helped to build many of the churches and schools and other buildings in the Dayton area. They would also buy a house, remodel it, and sell it for a profit, and so lived many places in Dayton. They had two children: Mary Agnes (my mother) and Donald Eugene. Frand died 7 Oct 1978 and Gen died 12 May 1986 and they are both buried at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton. Several other members of the family are also buried there.
