Eureka County is located in north central Nevada and is bordered by Elko County on the north and east, White Pine County on the east, Nye County on the south, and Lander County on the west. The county has a total area of 4,180 square miles, and in the year 2000 it had a population of 1,651.

The county seat is Eureka which is the largest town in the county. Other towns or former towns include Beowawe, Crescent Valley, Emigrant Pass, and others. The county has always been sparsely settled. Like other areas of the Great Basin, the altitude is high. The weather is generally dry and especially hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

Eureka County was created in 1873 from the eastern half of Lander County. Lander County had been created a decade earlier in 1862 as one of the original counties in Nevada with its county seat at Austin. When silver was discovered in the vicinity of the town of Eureka, residents of the new mining camp complained that it was too far to travel to Austin for county business, so Eureka County was established.

Eureka means "I found it," and the name had been previously used for locales in California.
