Mack, Brita ~ Friday, September 1, 2000. Brita Frost-Hansen Mack, 61, died in South Pasadena, Calif., on Aug. 29. A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, she was born to Svend and Agnethe Frost-Hensen and grew up and attended school in Denmark. She received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend Carlton College in Minnesota, and while there, she met Thomas Mack. They were married in Denmark in 1978, and after graduation from Carlton, went on to Columbia University in New York City, where Mrs. Mack received her master's degree in library science. She was the director of Lincoln Massachusetts Children's Public Library in Boston and for many years worked at The Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, Calif. She was preceded in death by her father and is survived by her mother Mrs. Agnethe Frost-Hansen of Denmark; husband Dr. Thomas Mack; son Peter Mack of Orinda, Calif., and daughters Christiane Mack of New York City and Alexandra Mack of South Pasadena; and mother-in-law Mrs. Duane Mack of Minden.

Maggach, Richard ~ Saturday, March 4, 2000. A memorial service for long-time Gardnerville resident Richard "Dick" Douglas Maggach, 72, who died March 1, will be held March 11 at 1 p.m. at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, with Pastor Pete Nelson officiating. Mr. Maggach was born in a Castro Valley, Calif., farmhouse on Feb. 22, 1928, to Alex and Eva Maggach He attended Hayward High School and Modesto Junior College and served with the Merchant Marines toward the end of World War II. On Jan. 10, 1948, he and Shirley Scott were married Mr. Maggach worked with a Caterpillar dealer in San Leandro, Calif., until 1958, when he founded Valley Excavating. He was a licensed general engineering contractor in California and Nevada, doing extensive work with Pacific Gas and Electric and the Bay Area Rapid Transit. In 1971, he semi-retired and moved to Gardnerville. He continued his business, doing minor jobs in Douglas County until he retired in 1987. Mr. Maggach was a past president of the Pleasanton (Calif.) Lions Club. He joined the Livermore Elks Club and was a charter member of Minden/Douglas Elks Lodge No. 2670. He was a past treasurer and, for 16 years, was an active member of the Gardnerville Kiwanis Club. He was also past president of the Douglas County Contractors Association. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1953 and his father in 1957. Survivors include his wife Shirley of Gardnerville; daughter and son-in-law Michael and Susan Arnett of Midwest City, Okla., and daughter and son-in-law Terry and Sandra O'Connor of Pleasanton, Calif.; grandsons Clint and Jerry Gilchrist of Midwest City, Rod and Clayton O'Connor of Pleasanton and granddaughter Monica O'Connor of Pleasanton; brother "Scotty" of Pleasanton, sister Evelyn of Danville, Calif., and sister and brother-in-law Bud and Ruth Brillisour of Placerville, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Malek, John ~ Wednesday, April 19, 2000. John J. Malek, 77, of Schenectady, N.Y., died on April 13 at his residence. Mr. Malek is the father of John Joseph Malek of Gardnerville. He was born in Troy, N.Y., on Feb. 17, 1923, and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He had been a baker for over 48 years and was an active communicant of St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park. Mr. Malek was a 55-year member of the Trojan Keglers bowling league, an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, fishing and a great game of horseshoes. Mr. Hartman is survived by three children and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 17, and interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Waterford. Malysheff, George ~ Wednesday, September 13, 2000. George Oleg Malysheff, 42, died on Sept. 4, following an accident. Private services will be held at Lake Tahoe and Juneau, Alaska, the two places he loved the most. He was born in Seattle, Wash., and married Chris, whom he had known since 1974. They lived in Minden and operated Galena Farms, a training and breeding horse center. Mr. Malysheff was an avid fisherman, both privately and professionally. He also was a heavy equipment mechanic engineer and professional scuba diver for over 20 years. He was employed by the sign company Aramark at Lake Tahoe, where he was a heavy equipment mechanic. Surviving Mr. Malysheff are his wife Chris; daughters Elizabeth and Andronica; brothers Alexander, Anatole and Gregory; and sister Tanya.

Marker, Ila ~ Saturday, August 5, 2000. Ila Mae Marker, 81, died on Aug. 3 at her Topaz Lake home. She was born in Fullerton, Calif., on Jan. 1, 1919. She was a resident of Topaz Lake since 1983, coming from Carson City and Southern California, where she was a beverage manager for Hollywood Bowling Lanes. Mrs. Marker was also first chair trumpeter in the Women's Long Beach Symphony. Most recently, she was a member of the Topaz Sage Hens and the Topaz Birthday Girls and served with Topaz Bar-B-Q Club and Topaz Sertoma. She is survived by her husband Loyde (Jim) Marker of Topaz Lake.

Martin, Wyburn - Record Courier, Wednesday, May 24, 2000. A memorial service for Wyburn Wayne Martin, 69, will be held tomorrow, May 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Calvary Chapel of Carson Valley, 1101 Dresslerville Road, Gardnerville. Dan Steen will officiate. Mr. Martin died on May 21 as a result of a glider accident. He was born on Dec. 27, 1930, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Wyburn James and Anastasia Zechiel Martin. He and Katherine Steiner were married in Quartzsite, Ariz., 49 years ago. Mr. Martin was owner of a glass company and was a member of Soar Minden and the American Soaring Association. He loved to snow ski and soar in gliders. Preceding him in death were his parents and grandparents. Surviving are his wife Katherine of Gardnerville; son James Martin of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and daughters Debra Gariador of Chino, Calif., and Mary K. Dvorak of Running Springs, Calif.; sisters Marilyn Neeley and JoAnn Martin, both of Seattle, Wash.; and six grandsons and two granddaughters.

Martinez, Enrique ~ Saturday, July 22, 2000. A graveside service was held for Enrique Martinez yesterday, July 21, at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden, with Pastor Pete Nelson presiding. Mr. Martinez died on July 17 at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., at the age of 76. He was born on Dec. 8, 1923, in Alquiza, Cuba, to Enrique and Maria Mendez Martinez. He was a Gardnerville resident for seven years, coming from Westminster, Calif., and was a member of the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville. Mr. Martinez loved spending time with his family and enjoyed his garden. He was preceded in death by his wife Haydee Martinez, who died on Sept. 11, 1999. Surviving are his sons Henry and Roland Martinez, both of Gardnerville; sister Maria Sanz of Miami and brothers Rolando Martinez of South Lake Tahoe and Miguel Martinez and Faustino Martinez, both of Miami; and grandchildren Nolan, Ryan and Kaisha Martinez of Gardnerville.

Matley, Theodore ~ Wednesday, January 26, 2000. A memorial service for Theodore Russell Matley, 71, was held on Jan. 23 at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Mr. Matley died on Jan. 20 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in Reno on July 5, 1928, to Theodore and Imogene Pixley Matley. He served in the U.S. Army, playing in the 6th Army Band and the 6th Army Bagpipe Band. He lived in South Lake Tahoe for 20 years before moving to Carson City in 1987. He worked in the gaming industry. Mr. Matley enjoyed gardening, restoring Model Ts and painting, and he loved cats and dogs. He was a member of the Silver State Model T Ford Club of Carson City. Survivors include his wife Janeth Youngs Matley of Carson City; sons Russell Scott Matley of Sacramento, Calif., and Marshall Reno Matley of Carson City and daughters Alyson Matley of Key West, Fla., and Gayle Colella of El Granada, Calif.; brothers Wayne O. Matley of Enumclaw, Wash., Lauren Matley of Kent, Wash., and Gordon Matley of Stockton, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Mayberry, Marshall ~ Wednesday, February 23, 2000. A memorial service for Marshall Lewis Mayberry, 68, will be held today, Feb. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Exciting First Baptist Church in Minden. Mr. Mayberry, a Minden resident since November 1997, died on Feb. 20 at his home. A native of Lynchburg, Va., he was born on Feb. 18, 1932, to Tom and Grace Mayberry. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and was an Air Force veteran. Mr. Mayberry was retired from National Refractories and Mineral Corporation where he was employed for 16 years. He was also retired from Kaiser Refractories after 20 years of employment. He was the holder of three U.S. Patents on Refractory Compositions. Surviving are his wife Marcia Wisler Mayberry; step-mother Dorothy Mayberry of Springfield, Va.; sons Michael Mayberry of Pleasanton, Calif., Stuart Mayberry of Modesto, Calif., and Bryan Wisler of Columbiana, Ohio; daughters Wendy McClenahan of Valencia, Calif., and Tracy Wisler of Upland, Calif.; brother Thomas Mayberry of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; sisters Jacqueline Rivera of Orlando, Fla., and Garnett M. Irby of Springfield, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Mays, Arthur ~ Saturday, January 1, 2000. Arthur Cartwright Mays, 90, died on Dec. 27 at Sierra Convalescent Center in Carson City. Burial will be at Ione Cemetery in Ione, Calif. Mr. Mays was born on Jan. 18, 1909, in Sausalito, Calif., to Arthur and Arabella Stoneseifer Mays. He was a veterinary supplies salesman for 50 years. He lived in Minden from 1961 to 1990, when he moved to Oregon. He returned to Minden in 1999. He had also lived in Sacramento, Calif., for eight years. Mr. Mays enjoyed fly fishing and camping, especially in the mountain streams of the Sierras. He was predeceased by his brother Alfred S. Mays. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Mays, of Minden; sons Fred A. Mays of Roseville, Calif., David Mays of Danville, Calif., and Donald Mays of San Francisco; brother Hugh C. Mays of Taft, Calif., and sister Catherine E. Buttrum of Sonoma, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Mc Laughlin, Mervyn ~ Saturday, January 29, 2000. Mervyn Lawrence Mc Laughlin, 90, died on Jan. 26 at Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville. A memorial service will be held in California at a later date. Mr. Mc Laughlin was born in Crescent City, Calif., on Aug. 30, 1999, to Edward James and Mary Ellen Brennen Mc Laughlin. He lived at Topaz Ranch Estates for 26 years, coming from Brooksville, Fla. In this younger days, he was a jockey in the county fair in Crescent City. He owned and operated Mc Laughlin Ranch, which is now a park, in Crescent City, and was a Trustee for Pine Grove School for 14 years. Mr. Mc Laughlin was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed deer and duck hunting. Predeceasing him were his wife Constance Jeanette McCoy Mc Laughlin, who died on May 6, 1994, a brother and a sister. He is survived by sons Patrick N. Mc Laughlin of Topaz Ranch Estates and James L. Mc Laughlin of Crescent City and daughters Catherine E. Painter of Ely and Stella Ann Rose of Burbank, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

McCartin, James ~ December 15, 1999. A memorial service for James A. McCartin will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville.

McCartin, James ~ Wednesday, December 8, 1999. James A. McCartin, 80, died on Dec. 6 at his Minden home. He was born in New York City on July 21, 1919, to James Mathew and Violet Margaret Heavey McCartin. His family was traced back to the Irish miners of Virginia City, and his ancestors included the famed Irish marble sculptor Edward McCartin and impressionist painter Water McCartin. He served in the U.S. Army for 7 years, was selected to attend OCS Infantry School and was a ranger, receiving the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He also served in the Air Force for 4 years during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. McCartin began sculpting in 1973 and had a studio in Minden where he crafted figures reminiscent of the early days in the West. He primarily created sculptured for private parties, but a few selected galleries in the area display his work. In 1981, he had the honor of presenting his bronze sculpture of "Tejas," a statue of a Texas longhorn, to then-President Ronald Reagan. Before moving to Minden, Mr. McCartin had lived in Smith Valley, Las Vegas and Reno. He worked as a microwave technician in the telecommunications industry. Predeceasing Mr. McCartin were his parents, brother Thomas Ronald McCartin and sister Mary Pritchard. Survivors include his wife Nancy McCartin of Minden; sons James of Castaic, Calif., Kevin of South Lake Tahoe, Lee of Incline Village, Scot of Spanish Springs, Nev., and Robert Effenberger of Bakersfield, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

McConkey, Philip ~ Wednesday, December 29, 1999. Philip McConkey, 75, died on Dec. 24 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. Mr. McConkey was born on May 31, 1924, in New York. He was a retired auto upholsterer and had moved from New York to Gardnerville 21 years ago.He worked at Grand Auto in Carson City for many years, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Wellington, Topaz Lodge 3630. Surviving Mr. McConkey are his wife Joyce of Wellington; daughter Carla Adamson of Palm Springs, Calif.; grandson Mike Wilderhold of Palm Desert, Calif.; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

McCormack, Garth ~ October 6, 1999 . A special memorial will be held in the spring to celebrate the life and artworks of Garth Stewart McCormack, 55, of Woodfords. Information will be distributed at that time to ensure his friends can all attend. Mr. McCormack died Oct. 1 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was the owner and operator of Woodfords' Inn in Woodfords and a friend to many in Alpine County, Minden and Gardnerville. He was born Jan. 15, 1944, and raised in San Jose, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army, worked for about five years for the San Jose Police Department, then moved to Alpine County to be a deputy sheriff. He returned to San Jose in the mid-1970s and served for 12 years as a patrol officer with the San Jose Police Department. He returned to his beloved mountains, bought Woodfords Inn in the late 1980s and had resided in Woodfords ever since. Mr. McCormack was a man of varied talents and achievements. He earned his master's degree in fine arts from San Jose State University. He served at one time as art commissioner for Alpine County. He was an accomplished pianist and photographer, painted and crafted his own pottery. He enjoyed many kinds of music and loved to cook, regularly attending fine dining and wine tasting events. He also loved riding his motorcycle, hiking and other outdoor activities. Both of Mr. McCormack's parents preceded him in death. He leaves behind his cousin, Marty Boyer of Hayward, Calif., his companion, Victoria Taylor, distant relatives and countless friends.

McCue, George ~ Wednesday, February 9, 2000. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held for George Leo McCue, 68, tomorrow, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville. Father Bill Nadeau will be the Celebrant. Interment will follow at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mr. McCue died on Feb. 4 in Gardnerville. He was born in Boston, Mass., on Jan. 12, 1932, to George and Jane Crawford McCue. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict. Mr. McCue was a Gardnerville resident for seven years, coming from Redondo Beach, Calif., where he was a production control specialist with Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, Calif., for 30 years. He enjoyed visiting the senior center in Gardnerville and going to his grandchildren's sporting events, plays and school functions. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Jeanette and son Daniel, who both died in Whittier, Calif., in 1990. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Terrence and Colleen McCue of Gardnerville; brother Fred Mahoney of Boston and sister Doris Banks of Camarillo, Calif.; and grandchildren Kelly and Kevin McCue of Gardnerville.

McGovern, Virginia ~ February 16, 2000. Virginia Arlene McGovern, 77, died on Feb. 11 at her Minden home. She was born on Oct. 16, 1922, in Watertown, S.D., and married Robert McGovern in San Francisco, Calif., 48 years ago. Mrs. McGovern had worked as a juvenile counselor. She lived in Minden for 10 years, coming from Ukiah, Calif. Surviving are her husband Robert McGovern; daughter Ferol A. McGovern of Minden; brother Marvin Tarbox of San Francisco and sister Rose Thompson of Minnesota; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.Inurnment will be at Walton's Carson Gardens in Carson City and a private memorial will be held at a later date.

McGreal, Thomas ~ Wednesday, February 2, 2000. A funeral Mass for Thomas Patrick McGreal, 68, will be held tomorrow, Feb. 3, at 9 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville, followed by burial at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mr. McGreal died on Jan. 29 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 11, 1931, to John and Katie Coyne McGreal. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1968 and entered civil service as a produce manager at the Fort Ord, Calif., commissary, where he worked until 1989. Mr. McGreal was a resident of Gardnerville for nine years, coming from the Monterey Peninsula in California. He was a member of St. Gall Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus in Seaside, Calif., the Fleet Reserve Association of Carson City, Post 591 of the American Legion, and the U.S.S. Chourre Reunion Group. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Eleanor Marie McGreal and nephew Edward A. McGreal. Survivors include his wife Alice Ventura McGreal of Gardnerville; daughter Kathleen Buscay of Douglas County and sons Thomas M. McGreal of San Marino, Calif., Timothy P. McGreal of Pacific Grove, Calif., John B. McGreal of Oceanside, Calif., and Daniel J. McGreal of Mission Viejo, Calif.; sister Kay Shea of Lyndhurst, Ohio, and brothers Jack McGreal of Concord Township, Ohio, and Ed McGreal of Avon Lake, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Meadows, Kenneth ~ Wednesday, October 25, 2000. Kenneth Meadows, 71, a Gardnerville resident for 12 years, died on Oct. 21 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. A funeral service was held yesterday, Oct. 24, at FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home and burial followed at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mr. Meadows was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., on June 22, 1929, to Ralph and Cleo Munshower Meadows. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and worked as an engineer for Lockheed in San Jose, Calif., before moving to the Carson Valley. He loved traveling and fishing. Predeceasing Mr. Meadows was his father. Surviving are his wife Beverly Meadows of Gardnerville; mother Cleo Meadows of Campbell, Calif.; sons Larry Meadows of Idaville, Ind., and Steven Meadows of Sunnyvale, Calif., and daughter Debra Genzel of Roseville, Calif.; brother Donald Meadows of Campbell and sisters Dorothy Schisler of Middletown, Calif., Beverly Speziale of San Jose, and Joan Isbell of Gilroy, Calif; and three grandchildren.

Mellquist, Clara ~ Saturday, October 30, 1999. Clara Mellquist, 83, a Gardnerville resident for 18 years, died on Oct. 25 at Valley Meadows Living Center. She was born in Kansas City, Kan., on Aug. 6, 1916, and had lived in Southern California before moving to the Carson Valley. Mrs. Mellquist was a member of St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville and La Sertoma. She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, Crescenta Valley chapter. She loved gardening. Predeceasing Mrs. Mellquist was her husband of 49 years, John, who died in 1981. Surviving are her daughter Joan McKeig of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Melzer, Elmer ~ Friday, June 2, 2000. Elmer G. Melzer, 78, of Carson City, died May 30 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. He was born May 9, 1922, in Chicago to Gottfried J. and Anna Frank Melzer. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and joined the submarine services, serving on the U.S.S. Gar in the South Pacific and on Midway Island. He married Lorraine Ploetz of Aurora, Ill., in 1943. After his discharge from the Navy in 1945, Mr. Melzer he became a journeyman meat cutter, then entered the electrical and electronic industries, working for Texas Instruments and in Southern California for Phaostron-Hanson-Hawk Co. and as a manufacturing engineer for Micom in Canoga Park, Calif. He had been a Carson City resident for six years, coming from Paradise, Calif. He loved gardening and woodworking and improving each of his homes. Mr. Melzer was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Richardson, Texas, and a member of Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church in Douglas County. Among his survivors are his wife Lorraine of Carson City; daughter Kristine of Carson City; sons David and wife Terry of Minden, Michael of Palmdale, Calif., James and wife Darla of Port Angeles, Calif.; sister Marcella Ernsting of Montello, Wis.; three granddaughters, Shannon Melzer of Carson City, Jessica Melzer of Renton, Wash., and Leslie Darby of Highland, Calif.; and one great-grandson, Kyle Darby of Highland, Calif.

Melzer, Walburga ~ Saturday, February 12, 2000. Walburga I. Melzer, 82, died on Feb. 8 at Carson Health Care in Carson City. She was born on Aug. 3, 1917, in Oakland, Calif., to George and Mary Konrad Gass. A homemaker who liked bowling, Mrs. Melzer had lived in Minden for 20 years, coming from La Crescenta, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband John Melzer Sr. in 1998 and son John Melzer Jr. in 1992. Mrs. Melzer is survived by her daughter Patricia Tubbs of Glendale, Calif., one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Mendelsohn, Candace ~ Saturday, August 26, 2000. Candace (Candi) Jeanne Mendelsohn, 51, of Gardnerville, died on Aug. 22 of cancer. She was born in Bellingham, Wash., on Jan. 12, 1949, and adopted at birth by Donald and Marjorie Mitchell. Mrs. Mendelsohn graduated from Bellingham High School and attended Bellingham Business College. She was a partner in C.J. Construction and most recently employed as a FEMA inspector. Mrs. Mendelsohn and her business partner, Wanda Wideen, have a record of going out of their way to care personally for the elderly and those in need. Predeceasing Mrs. Mendelsohn were her parents and brother James. She is survived by a daughter, Sara Hyatt of Burlingame, and her sister, Donna Eldred of Patterson, N.Y., as well as many caring aunts, uncles and cousins. The family wishes to extend deep gratitude toward Hospice of the Valley and the many friends who rallied to her care and support during her illness.

Merrill, Rhoda ~ Wednesday, October 11, 2000. Funeral services for Rhoda Merrill, 81, were held in Las Vegas on Oct. 4 at Palm Eastern Cemetery. Mrs. Merrill died on Oct. 1 at her Indian Hills home. She was born on June 7, 1919, to Benjamin and Esther Kaufman Trachtenberg. She had lived in Carson City since 1980, coming from Susanville, Calif., and Las Vegas prior to that. Mrs. Merrill was a homemaker. Her husband Irwin Merrill preceded her in death. She is survived by sons Gregg Merrill of Las Vegas and Howard Merrill of Santa Monica, Calif.; three brothers and one sister; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Meyer, Vernon ~ September 1, 1999 Vernon Harris "Bud" Meyer, 73, of Jordan, Ark., died Aug. 29 at Baxter County Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be held tomorrow, Sept. 2, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Mountain Home, where he was a member. Mr. Meyer was born on Nov. 14, 1925, in Howells, Neb., to John F. and Hattie Meyer. He graduated from Fremont Senior High School in 1943 and attended classes at Midland Junior College in Fremont, Neb., just prior to enlisting in the U.S. Merchant Marines later that year. While in training at Sheepshead Bay, N.Y., he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944. After basic training at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., he was shipped to the European Theater, where he served at the Battle of the Bulge. At the time of his honorable discharge from the Army on June 26, 1946, Mr. Meyer was one of the youngest first sergeants in the service. President Harry S. Truman honored him with a personal letter of thanks and appreciation for his heroism and leadership. After leaving the service, he, his mother and younger brother moved to Long Beach, Calif., to join another brother and sister. There he completed an associate of arts degree in electrical engineering and became employed as a weapon systems specialist by the U.S. Department of the Navy. After 32 years, he retired with numerous awards for devoted service, including a letter of his country's appreciation signed by President Jimmy carter. Upon retirement, Mr. Meyer moved to Walker, Calif., where he lived prior to moving to the Twin Lakes area of Arkansas in August 1994. After briefly residing in Cotter, he moved to his last place of residence in Jordan. Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Terry Lee. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughters Cheryl Weeks, Kathy Henderson and "Sam" Webster, all of Ventura, Calif.; adopted son/grandson Steve Meyer, son of Terry Lee; brothers Norman C. Meyer of Seal Beach, Calif., Warren J. Meyer of Las Vegas and Dean W. Meyer of Jordan, Ark.; sisters Florence Malecki of Long Beach, Calif., and Shirley Paul of Leucadia, Calif.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Miller, Fred ~ Wednesday, January 5, 2000. Fred R. Miller, 87, died on Jan. 3 at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. He was born on Aug. 19, 1912, in Hanford, Calif., to Charles and Edith Hamilton Miller. A Gardnerville resident for four months, Mr. Miller had previously lived in Santa Cruz, Calif., and was a truck driver for the Exxon Corporation for 55 years. He was a professional musician who played the trombone in a Watsonville, Calif., band. He also was an avid sports fan and loved fishing and traveling. Mr. Miller's wife, Evelyn, preceded him in death in 1990 in Santa Cruz. Surviving are sons Norm Miller of Minden and Ron Miller of Los Altos, Calif., and daughter Barbara Childers of Texas; brother Lee Miller of Santa Cruz; and four grandchildren.

Minifie, Donald ~ Wednesday, March 22, 2000. Donald L. Minifie, 78, died on March 17 at Carson Health Care in Carson City. A memorial service will be held at Los Gatos Memorial Park in San Jose, Calif., at a later date. Mr. Minifie was born on Sept. 2, 1921, to Thomas and Irene Larry Minifie. He served with the U.S. Army. A resident of Genoa since 1978, he came from Los Gatos, Calif., where he had lived since 1955. He was a fireman and a member of the Fireman's Union of Santa Clara County, Calif., and the Volunteer Fire Department in Genoa. He served as fire chief at the Los Gatos Fire Department and the Genoa Fire Department. He also served on the town board in Genoa and had been a member of the Boiler Makers Union in Oakland, Calif. Mr. Minifie's wife, Anna Durkee Minifie, preceded him in death in 1997.Survivors include his son Raymond W. Minifie of Mountain Home, Idaho, and daughter Donna Lee Dump of Corona, Calif.; brother Stanley Minifie of Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mobley, Brian ~ Saturday, August 19, 2000. Brian C. Mobley, 38, died on Aug. 9 at his Minden home. He was born in Santa Cruz, Calif., on July 29, 1962, to Lynn and Dorothy Jordan Mobley. He graduated from Harbor High School in Santa Cruz in 1980 and attended the University of Nevada, Reno. For the last 18 years, Mr. Mobley was a computer programmer, electronic technician and network administrator for Bently Nevada Corp. in Minden. Surviving are his parents, Lynn and Dorothy Mobley of Minden; a grandmother in Santa Cruz, and several aunts, uncles and cousins in California, Oregon and Minnesota.

Morgan, Richard ~ Saturday, December 18, 1999. Richard Linn Morgan, 71, died on Dec. 11 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Mr. Morgan was born on March 22, 1928, in Grantsville, W.V., to Amos and Mary Susan Hamilton Morgan. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an attorney and legislative advocate, having received bachelor's and master's degrees from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.V., and a juris doctorate degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. On September 13, 1952, he and Barbara Capet were married in Bridgeport, W.V. He had also been a professional baseball player and was an avid golfer. Mr. Morgan was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Dorothea Kunzleman. Survivors include his wife Barbara of Carson City; daughter Kimberly Morgan, J.D., of Carson City and son Richard Randall, M.D., of Edmond, Okla.; sister Mary Correan Davis of Alexandria, Va.; and grandchildren Colin Morgan and Alli Morgan, both of Edmond, Ok., and Shilo Slider of Oxford, Pa.

Morgan, Yvonne ~ Saturday, January 15, 2000. A memorial service for Yvonne Frances Morgan, 74, will be held on Jan. 28 at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Los Angeles. Mrs. Morgan died on Jan. 6 at her Gardnerville home. She was born on Feb. 28, 1925, in Cooma, New South Wales, Australia, to George and Eva Ramsey Power. As part of a Navy family, she traveled extensively, living in Guam, Hawaii, Utah, Washington, Oregon and California. On April 17, 1943, she married Charles Alvin Morgan in Sydney, Australia. He preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Morgan had lived in Gardnerville for two months, coming from El Segundo, Calif., where she resided for almost 40 years. She was a homemaker who enjoyed knitting, sewing and gardening. Surviving are her daughters Marian E. Gunnoe of Gardnerville and Carolyn F. Morgan of El Segundo and son Charles R. Morgan of Essex, England; grandchildren Jason, Charles and Sacha; and great-grandchildren Joshua and Rebecca.

Morris, Tiffany ~ Wednesday, January 5, 2000. A memorial service for Tiffany Ann Morris, 29, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Chapel of Carson Valley on Dresslerville Road in Gardnerville. Pastor Dan Steen will officiate. Mrs. Morris died on Jan. 2 at her home in Gardnerville. She was born on Aug. 11, 1970, in Roseville, Calif., to Lee Roy and Patricia Ann Kearns Wallace. She was a Gardnerville resident for four years, coming from San Diego, Calif. On Dec. 22, 1995, she and Scott L. Morris were married in Gardnerville. Mrs. Morris was a loving mother and wife, who enjoyed working in the yard and running. She was a Christian and very active in Calvary Chapel. She is survived by her parents, who live in Clayton, Calif.; her husband Scott of Gardnerville and children, Nickolas P. Morris, Kaleb S. Morris and Brittany A. Smith; and brothers Jeremy Brock Wallace of Concord, Calif., and Chris Wallace of California, and sister Heather Beth Wallace of Clayton.

Murakami, Takashi ~ November 13, 1999. Takashi Murakami, 81, died on Nov. 8 at Valley Meadows Living Center in Gardnerville. A memorial service will be held at a later date in San Francisco, where he was born on Jan. 23, 1918. He and Toshiye Nagasugi were married on March 11, 1944, at Ft. Thomas, Ky. Mr. Murakami served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Pan American Airways. He had also been a communications specialist for the University of California at Berkeley for 10 years. He loved traveling and marketing Pan Am. Mr. Murakami is survived by his wife, Toshiye, of Minden.
