Jackson, Viola ~ Saturday, May 13, 2000. Viola C. Jackson, 68, died on May 11 at her home in Carson City. On May 18, a second visitation will be held at McCormick & Son Mortuary in Laguna Hills, Calif., followed by a Mass on May 19 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Interment will be at El Toro Memorial Park, in Lake Forest, Calif. Mrs. Jackson was born on Oct. 25, 1931, in Newark, N.J., to William and Beatrice Carter Langley. On June 6, 1970, in Santa Barbara, Calif., she married Dorsey W. Jackson, whom she had known since childhood. In 1977, she received the title of Jerusalem Pilgrim while in Israel. Mrs. Jackson was a Certified Nursing Assistant supervisor at South Coast Medical Center in Laguna Beach, Calif., and received a Certified Nursing Assistant Award for the state of California in 1989. She also worked for Safeway in Southern California for 13 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Auto League in East Orange, N.J., the Rosary Society at St. Nicholas Church in El Toro, Calif., and belonged to different ministries serving the sick and homebound in California. Surviving Mrs. Jackson are her husband Dorsey W. Jackson of Carson City; daughters Deborah Ann McGary of Minden and Diane Grace Buckley of Carson City; son Clyde A. Fletcher of Aguanga, Calif.; brothers William Langley of Lakewood, N.J., Reggie Carter of New Jersey, Robert Langley of Lompoc, Calif., and Russell Langley of Los Angeles; sisters Beatrice L. Merwin of Lompoc, Doris E. Henry of Orange, N.J., and Shirley A. Johson of East Windsor, Ct.; grandchildren Louis, William, Tracy and Christopher; and great-grandchildren Mercedes, Porsche and Joshua.

James, Martin ~ Friday, May 19, 2000.A memorial service for Martin James, 47, will be held today, May 20, at 3 p.m. at FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Carson City. Mr. James died on May 14 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born on Jan. 17, 1953, in Monroe, Mich., to Paul and Faith Manley James. He was a resident of Silver Springs for 30 years, coming from South Lake Tahoe. He was the owner of MFJ Building Inspections and a member of E Clampus Vitus Julia C. Bulette Chapter #1864 in Virginia City and the International Conference of Building Officials. Mr. James loved motorcycles, boating and restoring cars. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved making people laugh. Surviving are his parents Paul and Faith James and wife Kathie James, all of Silver Springs; sons Nathan James of Silver Springs, Jesse James of Fremont, Calif., and Bert Donaldson of Fernley; daughters Chelsea James of Silver Springs and Anne Lee of Stead; maternal grandmother Lula Gerig of Silver Springs; and brothers David Chapman and Randy James, both of Silver Springs, Dennis James of Willows, Calif., and Greg James and Matt James, both of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

James, Michael ~ Saturday, January 8, 2000. A funeral service for Michael E. James, 48, will be held today, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. at FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Carson City. Burial will follow at Woodfords Cemetery in Woodfords, Calif. Mr. James died on Jan. 4 in Crescent City, Calif. He was born in California on June 7, 1951, to Delbert "Sock" James and Sally Mendez. Before moving to Klamath, Calif., three years ago, he resided in the San Francisco Bay area, where he assisted his uncle in his painting business. Mr. James enjoyed fishing and playing the guitar. He was a mentor for underprivileged children at Culture on the Corner Art Center in San Francisco and helped with benefits for A.I.M. and the International Indian Treaty Council. Predeceasing Mr. James were his father, brothers Daniel Arnot and Stanley James and sister Kathleena James. Survivors include his mother Sally Mendez of Stewart; companion Pamela Richard of Klamath; brothers Philip James and Chris James, both of Dresslerville, and Keith Mendez and Blake Mendez, both of Klamath; and sisters Glenna Thompson of Woodfords, Clara Williams and Gloria James, both of Dresslerville, Carol Mendez Scott of Klamath, Caren James of Reno and Sharon Tiger of Phoenix, Ariz.

James, Russell ~ Saturday, August 5, 2000. Russell Roy "Butch" James, 56, died on July 31 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. A service will be conducted today, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Valhalla Estates, Camp Richardson, Calif., followed by a graveside service at Camp Richardson Cemetery. Mr. James was born on Feb. 9, 1944, in Woodfords, Calif., to Roy and Mae Dick James. After graduating from Douglas High School in 1962, he attended Haskell Institute where he met his wife of 35 years, Eloise West James. Following graduation from Haskell, the couple moved to the West Coast and then relocated to Cherokee, N.C., where Mr. James worked as a painter. While in Cherokee, he helped to establish the Cherokee Rodeo and BIA fire crew and coached various youth sports. He was also involved in the tribal community council. Upon returning to Woodfords, Mr. James was employed by the U.S. Forest Service for more than 20 years, working in fire suppression and most recently in recreation. As well as being Chairman of the Washoe Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, Mr. James volunteered his time to various local causes. Predeceasing him were his parents, grandparents Ben and Maggie Mayo James and Washoe and Minnie Dick, brothers Marvin and Delbert James and sister Eleanor James. Survivors include his wife Eloise West James, daughter Stacey James, son Russell "Beaver" James, sisters Betty Cruz and Flora James and brother Edward James, all of Woodfords; sister Leona James of San Francisco, granddaughter Lauryn Mae James of Woodfords, 29 nieces and nephews, 52 great-nieces and nephews and two great-great-nieces.

Janssen, Irwin ~ Wednesday, February 2, 2000. A funeral service for Irwin Arnold Janssen, 68, will be held tomorrow, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville, with Pastor Pete Nelson conducting the service. Interment will follow at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mr. Janssen died on Jan. 31 at his home in Minden. He was born in Worthington, Minn., on Nov. 17, 1931, to Albert and Lena Davids Janssen. He was a graduate of Fullerton (Calif.) High School and Fullerton Junior College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On Nov. 10, 1955, he and Barbara Marlatt were married in Pasadena, Calif. For 30 years, he was head construction superintendent for the Los Angeles County Flood Control. He was a Minden resident for eight years, coming from Whittier, Calif. Mr. Janssen loved hunting and fishing and was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed camping with Cory and Chad. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed barbecuing for all family occasions and holidays. He also enjoyed carpentry and woodcraft work. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Arlene Bingham.Surviving are his wife Barbara J. Janssen of Minden; son Steven A. Janssen of Hollywood, Calif., and daughters Lori D. Pedroza of Gardnerville, Teri L. Foreman of Riverside, Calif., and Karen M. Lambert of Whittier; sister Lorene Mowell of Morrow Bay, Calif., and brothers Phil Janssen of Kingman, Ariz., Rodney Janssen of Covina, Calif., Denton Janssen of Brea, Calif., Wendell Janssen of Fountain Valley, Calif., Larry Janssen of Placerville, Calif., and Dale Janssen of Libby, Mont.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jeffers, Wayne ~ Wednesday, January 5, 2000 . Wayne Alan Jeffers, 59, a 7-year resident of Gardnerville died of heart failure Jan. 1. Mr. Jeffers was born April 16, 1940, in Eureka, Nev. He was raised and educated in Hawthorne, where he lived and worked at the Naval Ammunitions Depot until 1979 when he was transferred to Layton, Utah. There he continued to work at Hill Air Force Base until his retirement in 1992. He and his family then moved to Gardnerville. Wayne was best known for his life-long commitment to public programs associated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where he was currently serving as Grand Master and Grand Patriarch for the state of Nevada. He was highly involved with the Virginia City Lodge Restoration Program, the Cemetery Preservation Program, a charitable Lodge Food Bank Program and the Lodge Foreign Student Exchange and Scholarship Programs. He will also be long remembered for his years of service to youth athletic programs while living in Hawthorne. Surviving Mr. Jeffers are his wife Anita C. Jeffers; sons Paul A Jeffers of Greensburg, Pa., Jason E. Jeffers of Silver Springs and Arron L. Moon of Carson Valley and daughters Debra J. Rasmussen of Carson City, Heather L. Moon of Topaz and Colleen S. Moon of Gardnerville; eight grandchildren; and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his mother, Venla Bay Jeffers of Eureka; father Everett Predmore of Mapleton, Utah; Carol Bay Collier of Pasadena, Texas; Darrol L. Jeffers of Anaheim, Calif.; Arden E. Jeffers of West Valley City, Utah and Wellington (Dee) Jeffers of Gardnerville; Shelby Nye of Burbank (Pasco), Washington; Anita Jump of Sacramento, Calif.; Warren and Gina Jeffers of Carson City. He was recently preceded in death by stepfather Wellington D. Jeffers Sr. of Gardnerville.

Johnson, Brad ~ Friday, September 1, 2000. Brad Philip Johnson, 46, died on Aug. 24 at his Gardnerville home from complications following leg surgery. A funeral service was held yesterday, Aug. 29, at Valley Christian Fellowship Church in Gardnerville and burial followed at Genoa Cemetery in Genoa. Mr. Johnson was born on June 10, 1954, in San Gabriel, Calif., to David and Lois Pinkston Johnson. On July 1, 1978, he married his best friend and childhood sweetheart, Cathy Haley. A longtime resident of Santa Cruz, Calif., Mr. Johnson moved to the Carson Valley in 1994. He was a building contractor and real estate developer. He was an avid Giants fan and loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Johnson is survived by his parents David and Lois Johnson; wife Cathy Johnson; children Brian and Brooke Johnson; paternal grandmother Iris Pinkston; brothers Greg and Kirk Johnson and sister Janet Gookin, all of Gardnerville.

Johnson, Elizabeth ~ Wednesday, June 28, 2000. Elizabeth Johnson, 75, who was instrumental in establishing the Douglas County Public Library in the mid-1960s, died Sunday at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. She served as president of the Nevada State Library Association, and during her tenure, the library system in Nevada grew to include libraries in Fallon, Lovelock, the state prison system and at the Caliente Detention Center. She chaired the committee to establish a library in 1964, guiding the process to a groundbreaking for the first library across the street from the courthouse in Minden (now the county communications building, home to 911) and the opening of the library in February of 1967. Services are scheduled for Friday, June 30, 2 p.m., at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville, with interment at Mottsville Cemetery. "She loved to read and do crossword puzzles and beat her grandsons at Scrabble, and she had a wealth of knowledge and information," her daughter Helen Kolbe said yesterday. Mrs. Johnson and her husband of 49 years, Knox Johnson, traveled and met people all over the world. She corresponded with her friends on a weekly basis, and writing letters was one of her talents and gifts for her friends and family, Kolbe said. Mrs. Johnson was a charter member of the East Fork Artists Association and an active member in several other community groups. She took leadership and supporting roles in the activities of her rancher husband, her children and grandchildren, including 4-H, Douglas County Ski Club, Douglas Swim Team and the Nevada CattleWomen's Association. She was a member of the Carson Valley Literary Club and Carson Valley Art Association. Mrs. Johnson was born June 15, 1925, in Oakland, Calif. Shewas raised in San Jose, Calif., and attended school in San Jose and Gardnerville. She graduated from Douglas High in 1942. She married Knox Johnson, a Carson Valley native, on March 26, 1951. Surviving Mrs. Johnson are her husband Knox; son Bill Whaley of Taos, N.M., and daughters Mary McCall of Carmichael, Calif., and Helen Kolbe of Gardnerville; and grandsons Fitz Whaley, Justin Kolbe, Drew Kolbe, Elliott Kolbe, Tate McCall and David Johnson.

Johnson, Maybelle ~ Friday, June 2, 2000. Maybelle Florence Johnson, 92, died on May 27 at Sierra Convalescent Center in Carson City. Ms. Johnson was born in Aberdeen, S.D., on Feb. 9, 1908, to Albert and Josephine Johnson. She was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a physical therapist aide. She retired as a physical therapist in 1963 and lived in Minden since 1980. Predeceasing Ms. Johnson were her sisters Clara Marie Logue, Esther Selma Thew, Pearl Janet Tempe and Ruby Amanda Taylor and brothers Elmer Ernest Johnson and Albert Junior Johnson. Survivors include her son James David Rose of Minden; brother Raymond Arnold Johnson of Coon Rapids, Minn., and sister Agnes Mary Fitzgerald of Southern California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jordan, Marjorie ~ Saturday, May 6, 2000. A memorial service for Marjorie Jordan, 82, will be held on Monday, May 8, at 10 a.m. at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Rev. Pete Nelson will officiate. Mrs. Jordan died on May 4 at Barton Skilled Nursing in Gardnerville. She was born on Aug. 28, 1917, in Athens, Ill., to James and Edna Clemens Parrish. She was a resident of Gardnerville for 22 years, coming from Idaho. Mrs. Jordan was active in the Retired Senior Volunteer program and the Genoa Homemakers Club for many years. She began volunteering in 1981 at the Douglas County Public Library, where she assisted the children's librarian until 1999. She received the Attorney General's Silver State Citizen Award for contributing over 2000 hours of volunteer service. Her husband, Ernest E. Jordan, preceded her in death in 1979. Surviving are her son Gary Jordan of Gardnerville and daughter Sharon Clevesy of Auburn, Calif.; brother Lawrence Parrish of Springfield, Ill.; and granddaughter Kristy Nutum of Carson City.

Judd, Donald ~ Wednesday, February 2, 2000. A funeral service for Donald Howard Judd, 71, a Carson Valley resident since about the age of 8, will be at 2 p.m. today at Calvary Chapel of Gardnerville. Mr. Judd died Jan. 28, at his home in Gardnerville. He was born Nov. 12, 1928, in Helena, Mont., to Frank and Olga May Judd. Before moving to Carson Valley, he lived in Montana, Idaho and Elko County. Mr. Judd worked in the dairy industry for 20 years before taking on building maintenance supervisor duties for Douglas County. He retired in 1988. He was a life member of the Carson Valley Lions Club. Mr. Judd enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1949 and was discharged in 1953 after a tour of combat duty in Korea. Among his survivors are his wife, Florence Rokowski Judd; five sons, Donald, David, Daniel, Dwight and Dana Judd, all of Gardnerville; two sisters, Carol Harris of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Rosolyn Heath of Pueblo, Colo.; a brother, Alfred Judd of Gardnerville; and eight grandchildren. Burial will be at Garden Cemetery in Gardnerville.

Judy, Phyllis ~ Saturday, May 6, 2000. Phyllis E. Judy, a Minden resident for 11 years, died on May 2 in Reno at the age of 74. She was born on May 9, 1925, in New York City to Carl and Ethel Glaser. She graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1942, and in 1943, she married Lowell Judy. She enjoyed crafts, egg painting, camping, fishing and meeting new friends. She was a member of the Carson Valley Sertoma Club and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Survivors include her husband Lowell Judy of Minden; children Scott of Long Beach, Calif., Jannean of Spokane, Wash., and Mark of Irvine, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
