Roll of men from Morristown, New Jersey, and vicinity, who served in the United States army and navy in the Spanish-American War, commencing April 21, 1898, and closing August 12 of the same year.

ABERS, George, Company H, 1st NJ Vol. Infantry. Residence: Morristown

ALLEN, Lee, Company C, 1st Division Hospital. Hospital Corps of 7th Army Corps.

ANDERSON, Thomas, Company I, 202d NY Vol. Infantry. After the close of the war,  reenlisted in Company C, 5th US Infantry.

BABCOCK, James E., Company M, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Died of typhoid fever in the 2d Div. Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida, September 12, 1898. Body was escorted to Morristown by Charles W. BODINE of Company M. Buried with military honors on Sept. 17, 1898. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church. Pall bearers were: William H. Hayes, Jr., Charles W. Bodine, William Rerrick, Fred. W.E. Minderman, George Blackwell and Christopher Nichols, all members of Babcock's company. Lieutenant Ernest Goodell and Sergeant Arthur Kelly of Company M were present at the funeral and accompanied the procession to the place of interment at Evergreen Cemetery.

James E. Babcock, who was the younger son of Jonas and Sarah Babcock, was born in Moristown, NJ, August 28, 1870. When about 17 years of age he enlisted in the US navy, in which he served three years; a portion of the time on the "Juniata." During his term of service he vistited, on his ship, Hong Kong, China, and several other foreign ports, and, after his retirement from the naval service in San Francisco, California, he visited several portions of the West. Babcock was a good sailor and a faithful soldier.

BERRY, George L., Company M, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Son of a Civil War veteran who served in the 11th NJ. Residence, Morristown.

BODINE, Charles W., Company M, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Before the expiration of his leave of absence, which had been granted him because of impaired health, he was stricken with typhoid fever and confined several weeks in All Souls' Hospital, Morristown. Residence, Morristown.

BONIFACE, Joseph F.R., Company B, then Company C, 1st Battalion US Marines. At last accounts Boniface was with the "Texas" at San Juan, Porto Rico [sic].

BOTTLEBERGER, Charles A., NJ Naval reserve, Eastern Division, on board the auxiliary cruiser "Badger."

BONIFACE, J. Harry, US Hospital Corps, on board the Hospital Ship "Relief," as nurse and night apothecary. Residence, Morristown.

BROWN, Victor, Company F, 28th US Infantry. Served with his regiment in the Philippines.

BROWN, William H., Company C, 1st Division Hospital. Hospital Corps of 7th Army Corps.

BURNETT, Edgar E., NJ Naval Reserve, Easter Division, on board the auxiliary cruiser "Badger." The crew of the "Badger" and a few on board the "Resolute" were the only men of the NJ Naval reserve who saw active service while the war lasted. Residence, Newburg, NY

COLLINS, Herbert C., Company K, 14th NY Vol. Infantry. While in camp Collins was stricken with typhoid fever, which reduced his weight from 148 to 116 pounds. While convalescing he came to Morristown, NJ, where his parents were residing, to recuperate. Residence, Morristown.

CURACOA, Joseph, Company A, 4th NJ Vol. Infantry. After discharge from the 4th NJ, he re-enlisted in the 28th US Vol. Infantry, in which he served in the Philippines.

CASHEN, Patrick, Company E, 69th NY Vol. Infantry. Residence, Morristown.

CONKLIN, Walter M., Jr., Company D, 201st NY Vol. Infantry. Enlisted July 13, 1898; died Nov. 20 1898, of Ascending Myletis, at Camp Witherell, Greenville, SC.

COOK, George W., Company M, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Soon after his return home he was taken down with typhoid fever. On December 10, 1898, having recovered his strength, Cook re-enlisted in Company B, 4th US Infantry. On June 19 1899, during a charge by American troops on the Filipino intrenchments near Perez Das Marinas, Luzon, he was shot and instantly killed. Cook's remains were returned home, where on March 19, 1900 they were buried with military honors. From the "Jerseyman" of March 23 1900—"The funeral obsequies of Private George W. Cook, who fell in action near Perez Das Marinas, Philippines, on June 19 1898, . . . were held in the Church of the Assumption, Monday morning (18th).

COONEY, Dennis F., Battery E, 4th US Artillery. After discharge from the 4th he re-enlisted in Light Battery B, 4th US Artillery. Although born in Boonton, NJ, Cooney, prior to his original enlistment, resided some time in Morristown, NJ; where his brothers and sisters now reside.

COONEY, Edward (brother of Dennis F.), Battery B, 4th US Artillery. After discharge from the 4th he re-enlisted in Company C, 26th US Vol. Infantry, in which he served in the Philippines.

DeGROOT, Alfred, Company A, 22d US Infantry. Transferred to Company A, 18th US Infantry for service in the Philippines. He is the son of a Civil War Veteran. Residence, Chicago, Illinois.

DEMPSEY, John, Company G, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Residence, Morristown.

FERRIS, M. Floyd, Corporal, Company D, 201st NY Vol. Infantry. Residence, Chatham.

FORCE, William, Jr., New Jersey Naval Reserve, Eastern Division, on board the auxiliary cruiser "Badger." Residence, Madison

GULICK, Walter, Battery H, 2d US Artillery. After discharge, re-enlisted. He served with his regiment in the Philippines.

HACKETT, Patrick, US Navy. Served mostly on the protected cruiser "Raleigh"

HART, Benjamin, Jr., Battery A, PA Light Artillery, attached to the 5th US Artillery. This battery, composed mostly of young men from several Colleges and Universiies, including Princeton, Yale and Harvard, participated in the Porto Rican campaign. Residence, Morristown.

HAYES, William H., Jr., Company M, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Residence, Woodhaven, NY

HEDDEN, Emerson A., Company H, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. Residence, Hackensack, NJ

HOLLOWAY, Frank A., Company M, 2d NJ Vol. Infantry. On Dec 10 1898 he re-enlisted in Company B, 4th US Infantry, in which he served in the Philippines.

HOWE, Fayette, Company G, 3d NJ Vol. Infantry. Residence, Morristown.

HOWELL, J. Warren, Company M, 71st NY Vol. Infantry. Residence, New York.

HUGHSON, A.G., Vol. Cavalry Division Hospital. Hospital Corps of 2d Army Corps.
