Andrew HAMILTON was governor of New Jersey under the proprietors. Also his son at a later date. His grandson Stephen settled at or near Dover, NJ, at an early date, and with Andrew KING, the progenitor of the KING family at Dover, was in the French and Indian War and was killed at Ticonderoga, NY, in July 1759. KING, only 19 years of age, returned to Dover.

Children of Stephen HAMILTON: Benjamin, a Revolutionary soldier, married 1780 Rebecca THOMKINS and had children: Lot, born Apr. 29, 1781, and Phebe, born July 23, 1783; David, probably served in the Revolution; William, a Revolutionary soldier, married (1) Elizabeth ROGERS Jan. 5, 1775. She died July 27, 1775, aged 18. (2) Nellie HURD, a sister of David HURD, of Dover.

Children of William and wife: Nellie; Elizabeth, born Apr. 19, 1779; Silas, born Feb. 4, 1781, married (1) Deborah or Hester MORRIS; (2) Abigail AYRES, died Feb. 1869, buried at Rockaway. He was in 1812 War, received communion at Rockaway Nov. 12, 1813, was elder 1824 and deacon 1832. William, born Feb. 20, 1783; Sarah, born Apr. 15, 1788; Jane, born Oct. 9, 1790; Benjamin, born Dec. 27, 1792.

Children of Silas HAMILTON, of Rockaway: David Hurd, born Nov. 25, 1805, married Ann REED, who was born 1806, died May 30, 1882. HE died Mar. 9, 1894, was elder in 1861, and sexton many years. William, born about 1807, went West, served in the Civil War; Lewis, baptized at Rockaway 1814, was missionary among the Indians, and preached the first sermon at Colorado Springs, returning from a visit to Rockaway he was killed by the cars at Kansas City about 1862. Mary Elizabeth, "A child", died Oct. 1813; John H., baptized Apr. 28, 1816.

Children of David H., and wife Ann: Silas, born 1833, died Dec. 21, 1854, buried at Rockaway; Lewis, was in the Civil War; William (1), was railroad engineer and killed at Mt. Hope by a powder explosion, buried at Hackettstown; Anna Louisa, married James WRIGHT, of Newark; John, served in the Civil War, removed to Decatur, Ill.; Margetta, married John ROGERS, living at White Meadow, near Rockaway; Stephen, born 1837, married ____ PELL, died Jan. 30, 1893; William (2), born Jan. 1848, married (1) Bertha METLER; (2) ____ Gregory, had child, Lewis, born 1874, died Mar. 24, 1882. He died at Orange Aug. 27, 1886, buried at Rockaway.
