Scudder Family Additional Information

The following is additional information that has been submitted to the Morris County NJGenWeb site about the SCUDDER family by Lisa.

A copy of Steele Family: A Genealogical History of John & George Steele, (Settlers of Hartford, Conn.,) 1635-6, and their Descendants with An Appendix Containing Genealogical Information Respecting Other Families Of The Name Steele Who Settled In Different Parts of the United States was purchased in a used bookstore in Illinois during the fall of 2001. The contents of the book were in tact but in fragile condition. The back cover was missing and the inside cover was only attached by a few threads. The inside front cover had a plate indicating its owner at one time was “Frederick Henry Steele” and written in faded pencil on the opposite page are the words “R.M.Steele Book.” In the upper right hand corner of that same page what appears to be the name Steele is written twice in faded ink.

On pages 98 and 99 of the book detailing the genealogy of the Steele family of New Jersey, two names had been singled out: Robert R. b. Dec. 12, 1805; m. Amanda Taylor; b. April 13, 1813 and Richard M. b. Nov. 28, 1833. The words ‘Grandfather Steele’ were written in the vicinity of those two names.

Page 145 (Additions and Corrections) reads as follows: “Page 98. — No. (14). Richard Mr. m. Francis Augusta _______; one son: Henry Frederick.” The surname ‘Swan’ has been handwritten into the blank.

Inside the front cover were two pages that evidently had been torn from a family Bible and contained data from the Steele and Scudder families. Page 677 (marriages) was blank and pages 678-680 contained birth and death information.

The original Steele Family genealogy and Thomas Steele Bible are housed at Alexander Library, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The information was sent to representatives of both the Steele and Scudder families, as well as to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
