Biographical and Genealogical History of Morris County New Jersey. Illustrated. Vol. II., Lewis Publishing Company, New York and Chicago, 1899. This retired citizen of Morristown is a son of Stephen and Susan (Kilborn) Guerin and was born on the old Guerin homestead, near the county seat, November 26, 1842. He acquired a fair education in the public schools, and experience, observation and extensive reading have added largely to this. At the age of fourteen he started out in life for himself with no capital, but possessed of laudable ambition and a hope of one day achieving success if it could be accomplished through resolute purpose and indefatigable industry. He secured a clerkship in a hardware store in Newark, where he remained until 1856, when he went to New York city and became a salesman in a drygoods establishment. He was employed in that capacity for nine years, when he left New York and returned to Morristown, having acquired some capital by means of his industry and frugality. This he invested in a grocery stock, and he carried on operations along that line for several years. From 1885 until 1890 he held of the office of internal revenue collector, but is now living retired, enjoying a rest which he has truly earned and richly deserves. He managed his business interests with great care, closely applied himself to his work and by his sound judgment and untiring energy was enabled to secure handsome competence. In 1882 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Guerin and Mrs. Julia De Mott, a daughter of Andrew B. Cobb. She died in 1894, leaving a daughter, Julia Guerin. Our subject is a member of St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal church, is a stanch Democrat in politics and is one of the worthy citizens of Morristown, giving his hearty co-operation to every movement calculated to advance the general welfare.
