For ten years Mr. BROWN has been engaged in the drug business in Boonton and is imbued with a spirit of enterprise that makes him an active factor in commercial circles. He was born in Pompton, Passaic county, New Jersey, November 19, 1851. When seven years of age he became a resident Boonton, and acquired his education in the public schools of the town and the Boonton Academy. He then entered upon his business career as deputy county clerk under Mr. SPEER, serving in that capacity for two and a half years, after which he entered the drug business in Newark, as a salesman in the employ of P. S. VAN PATTEN. He was afterward with Dr. Jeremia CROSS, of the same city, where he remained for seven years. He also spent one year in Orange, with Thomas COX, a druggist, and for nine months was in the employ of William H. LOVELAND, in Elizabeth. On the expiration of that period he was appointed apothecary of the state hospital for the insane at Morris Plains, under the medical superintendent, Dr. H. A. RUDOLPH, where he continued for eight years, discharging his duties with marked promptness and fidelity. He then resigned his position, on the 2d of August, 1887. On the 22d of September, 1888, he opened his present drug store in Boonton and has since conducted a successful and constantly growing business. He has a well appointed store, and his honorable dealing and courteous treatment of all patrons have secured him a liberal patronage. He was licensed by the state board of pharmacy, on the 8th of June, 1882. In politics Mr. BROWN is a stalwart Republican and is now serving his third term and fifth year as commissioner of appeals. He supports all measures for the public good and his advocacy of such interests has materially advanced the welfare of the community. He is a member of Arcania Lodge, No. 60, A. F. & A. M.; of Pequannock Council, Royal Arcanum, and is a very active member of the First Reformed church. This biography was scanned and contributed by Catherine Smith DeMayo. |
