DURHAM/MARTIN
I am looking for the forebears of Adam Durham, who, according to the family
bible, was born in 1799, place unknown. The first record of him is the 1830
US Census which places him in Hardwick Township, Warren Co. NJ. He married
Charity Martin (of Hardwick Twp.) about 1823. Charity, born 1797, was the
daughter of Benjamin Martin and Margaret Reynolds. He later moved to the
Andover & Stanhope areas of Sussex Co. Benjamin was the son of John Martin &
Esther Roberts. Charity had a brother, Jonathan Martin, born 1794. Adam
Durham's death record (1878) states that his mother's name was Sarah. There
is strong evidence to suggest he had a brother, John Durham (ca. 1805 -
1872) who later lived in the Hackettstown area. It is strongly suspected
that the families were either in the Mt. Bethel Twp. or Easton, PA areas
before crossing the Delaware River about 1800, ±; OR they may have moved
north from Hunterdon County, NJ. Adam's son, Benjamin, was working as a
laborer in Bethlehem Twp., Hunterdon County in 1868. ANY help would be
appreciated, and will gladly exchange information. Thanks from PA.
