DESCENDANTS OF John Swett of Newbury, Mass., by Everett S. Stackpole, no date, published by The Journal Printshop, Lewiston, ME. Copied by Elaine Merrell. This is through page 39.

FOREWORD

Some have supposed that the Swett, Sweat, Swete, Sweet families are all of common origin. Swett and Swete, however, seem to have been two distinct and separate families. John de la Swete had a shop in Canterbury, Eng., in 1494. Later he is called simply John Swete. Here the origin of this surname is shown. He was John de la suite, of the retinue of some nobleman or dignitary of the church. The surname Swete is often found in Devonshire. The coat of arms of this family was printed in the seventh volume of the New England Historic-Genealogical Register, as though it belonged to the Swett, or Sweat family. This must be an error. Swet is an earlier Anglo-Saxon surname. William Swet is mentioned as a tenant of Hugh de Chauncaus, at Upton, in the reign of Henry III. about 1216. The Hundred Rolls contain the names of Swet le Bone (Goodman Swet), in co. Norfolk, Adam Swet in Co. Oxford, Roger son of John Swet in Co. Cambridge, about the year 1275.-See Bardsley's Dictionary of English and Welsh names, p.731
Chaplain William Suwet made a grant of a mesure of land in Coventry, Warwickshire, to William de Colesby, in 1369. John Swet, or Suet, of Thurleston, Derbyshire, had mother Emma, son Edmond, and wife Alice, in 1332. A search of old English records discloses the surname, Swet, Swett, Sweat, Suet, Suwet, etc., occurring often in the South of England. It has been published that John Swett of Newbury came from the Isle of Guernsey, and that his descendants settled in Wellfieet and Truro, Mass. There seems, on investigation, to be no connection between the Swetts of Cape Cod and those of Newbury. -See History of Barnstable County, p. 821. See also appendix to this book. The aim of this hook is to trace all descendants of John Swett down to about the year 1800 and some families down to the present date. Thus it may be easy for all living descendants to find their line of ancestry.

SWETT GENEALOGY

Just where John Swett of Newbury came from has not been learned. He brought a wife and four sons with him. He was admitted to the freedom of Massachusetts Colony, 18 May 1642, and was one of the grantees of Newbury, Mass., 7 December 1642. He must be carefully distinguished from John Sweet of Boston about the same time. John Swett of Newbury had wife, Sarah, who died 11 Dec. 1650. He may have had a second wife, Phebe, who died, a widow, 6 May 1665. He lived on the first lot east of the old landing, on the north side of Parker's River. He died 13 June, 1651-2. The monument erected on the lower green at Newbury, to the memory of the first settlers, does not bear the name of John Swett, but of Stephen, his son, it being then supposed that Stephen Swett was the first one of the family to settle in Newbury. The children of John Swett were,
2. JOHN, JR., b. about 1603; m. Mercy Rouse, (2) Jane (Hodges?).
3. JOSEPH b. ; m. Elizabeth Taylor, (2) Mrs. Mary Buttolph.
4. STEPHEN b. about 1620; m. Hannah Merrill, (2) Rebecca Smith.
5. BENJAMIN b. about 1626; m. Hester Weare.

JONATHAN SWETT (Benjamin 4, Moses 3, Benjamin 2, John 1), born in Dartmouth, Mass., 16 May 1720, is the only child named in the will of his father, 1757. He seems to have lived in Sanford, Me., 1754-1762, and signed a petition from Sanford in 1756. See Hist. of Sanford, pp. 26, 27, 45. Jonathan Swett of "Frieburg," in the county of York, yeoman, bought one hundred acres of land in Pearsonstown (Standish), Me., of Thomas Thompson, 17 Dec. 1776. Perhaps this was the Jonathan Swett "centinel," in Capt. Cargill's Company from 31 March till 8 July, 1759, at Penobscot. He signed a petition as settler at Majorbagaduce (Castine) in 1763. Had been a soldier. He sold land to his son John in Standish in 1790. His family, according to the Census of 1790, consisted of himself, one son under 16, and four females. He probably had the following children and perhaps others. Benjamin is known to have been his son.

MOSES SWETT (John 4, John 3, Benjamin 2, John 1), born in Kingston, N. H,. 23 March 1740, was possibly the "cordwainer" who bought land in Chester, N. H., 11 April 1763, and sold it in 1765. See deed at Concord. Moses Swett appears in Sanford, Me., in 1772. Similarity of family names leads me to think that he was the one named above. He lived "thirty roads east of Swett's bridge." He was an Ensign in the Revolution. Was living in that part of Sanford that is now Alfred in 1796. He married, in Wells, Me., 15 March 1770, Priscilla Hatch, "both of Wells." He removed to Tuftonshorough, N. H. Dec.12, 1808, Priscilla wife of Moses Swett, and Eunice wife of Moses Swett, Jr., both of Tuftonshorough, quitclaimed to Jonathan Copp land sold to him by Moses Swett. Deed witnessed by Robert Swett. See deed at Dover, N. H. Moses Swett is said to have removed to Granby, Canada, where his son John had settled, and to have died there. His family in Sanford, according to the census of 1790, consisted of six males and three females. He signed a petition from Coxhall, now Lyman, in 1774 and another in 1778. The following were his family, as near as can be gathered.
