COUNTY FORMATION

Belknap County was formed 20 Dec 1840, from a portion of Strafford County.

Belknap County was named in honor of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Belknap, born in 1744, died in 1798. He was a religious leader, a political leader, and a historical author (History of New Hampshire and American Biographies).

Laconia is the County Seat.
