LOOMIS--Former Telegram publisher dead at 84, funeral Saturday
Think of crossing the Khyber pass in a jeep, houseboating in Kashmir, choking on the acrid fumes from the funeral pyres along the Ganges, marveling at the sights of the ancient pyramids, Angor Watt, Mayan temples.....
Gasping in the rarified air of Manchu Piccu, being jostled by the riotous crowds at Carnival-time in Rio, going into gold mines in South Africa, watching a kangaroo stampede at a remote sheep station in Australia, rafting down a white water stream in the mountains of the Philippines.....
These were but a few of the marvelous experiences enjoyed by Mrs. Svea C. Loomis, 84, a former owner and associate editor of the Columbus Daily Telegram. Mrs. Loomis's love of "far away places with strange sounding names" came to an end when she died Wednesday afternoon at the Columbus Community hospital, following a month's illness.
Her extensive travels had taken her to nearly every country of the world. She had been around the globe four times on newspaper study missions, and had been in every country of Europe, Africa, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and most of the South Asian countries.
During these study missions she interviewed many of the most prominent world leaders of the 1960s, including Tito, Sukarno, Lumumba, Mobutu, Kenyetta, Ghandi, Nehru, Selassie and others.

On her return from these trips, Mrs. Loomis wrote travelogs for the Daily Telegram and spoke to many church, school and civic groups in this area.
Because she was on the islands of Matsu and Quemoy during a shelling by the Red Chinese, Mrs. Loomis received the title of Honorary Admiral in the Republic of China Navy. She was also named an Honorary Mayor of San Antonio, Tex., during HemisFair 1968.
Her association with the Columbus Telegram spanned nearly six decades, beginning in 1912 when her husband, the late Zela H. Loomis purchased an interest in the Telegram and became managing editor. After 1940 he was majority stockholder, and following his death in 1957, Mrs. Loomis became president and associate editor.
She remained active in the business until November, 1969, when the Telegram was purchased by Freedom Newspapers Inc.
She was a life member of the National Editorial Association, member of Inland Daily Press and Nebraska Press Associations; Newspaper Adventurers; Platte County Historical Society; National Geographic Society and Smithsonian Institute.
Socially, she was a charter member of the Wayside Country Club, longtime member of the Modern Priscillas and Dinner-Bridge Club. In recent years she was member of Elks Country Club. She had been affiliated with the Federated Church.
A lifelong Nebraskan, Mrs. Loomis was born April 18, 1892 at Kearney, the daughter of Karl P. and Karna (Bengtsson) Lindecrantz. She was a graduate of Holdrege High School, the family having moved to that community shortly after her birth. Her marriage to Zela H. Loomis took place Nov. 2, 1912 at Sioux City, Iowa.
Preceded in death by her husband on March 17, 1957, she is survived by one son, Laird H. of Columbus; two grandchildren, Laird F. of San Antonio, Tex., and Mrs. Robert (Ann) Burns of Millard. Four sisters also preceded her in death.
