GROTELUSCHEN, JOHN (April 29, 1831 - August 13, 1902) - [The Columbus Journal, August 20, 1901, pg. 2, col. 3]
    John Groteluschen, one of the old settlers of Platte county, died at his home on Shell creek last Wednesday, his ailment being Bright's disease of the kidneys, after one year's illness. Mr. Groteluschen was born April 29, 1831, in Oldenburg, Germany, and came directly from there in 1866, to his farm in this county which he took as a homestead and on which he lived to the time of his death. Mr. Groteluschen leaves a wife, four sons and six daughters to mourn the loss of a faithful husband and kind father. The sons are: Louis, Adolph, Emil and Otto; the daughters, Mrs. Ida Otte, Mrs. Lena Loseke, Mrs. Lizzie Loseke, and Misses Rosa, Bertha and Minnie. All live in this county with the exception of Louis who resides in Audubon, Iowa. There are also seventeen grandchildren who will remember their grandparent with reverence. Funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church Friday at 12 o'clock, Rev. Friese conducting the service. The funeral was largely attended, over two hundred carriages, filled with sorrowing friends and acquaintances of the deceased, following the remains to their last resting place.

    J. Adolf Groteluschen, 89, a life-time resident of this community, died Tuesday afternoon in the Lutheran hospital after a month's illness.
    Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Gass Funeral home and at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran church, the Rev. A.H. Guettler officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Gass chapel after 11 a.m. Friday.
    Mr. Groteluschen, the son of early Platte county settlers, John and Anna Loseke Groteluschen, was born Dec. 29, 1871 in Bismark township. He was baptized Feb. 24, 1872 and confirmed April 18, 1886, at Christ Lutheran church.
    On Oct. 22, 1896 he married Mathilda W. Wilke at Christ Lutheran church, and they had five children, Arthur, Ernest, Paul, Clara and Elmer. His wife passed away May 12, 1907.
    Mr. Groteluschen's marriage to Katherine Finke took place Feb. 25, 1911, and to this union were born five children, Harold, Louise, Elva, Roland and Norman. Kathrine, his wife, died Sept. 12, 1947.
    Mr. Groteluschen resided 12 miles northeast of Columbus until 1926, when he moved to a farm one-half mile north of Columbus.
    While a member of Christ Lutheran church he served on the building committee and held the office of treasurer for several years. After moving near Columbus he was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran church and was a trustee for several years.
    Surviving are his 10 children, Arthur, Ernest, Harold and Mrs. Fred (Elva) Gruenhage of Columbus, Paul of Wausau, Wis., Mrs. E.A. (Clara) Buchholz of Norfolk, the Rev. Elmer of Elgin, Ill., Mrs. Otto (Louise) Barjenbruch of Leigh, Roland of Lincoln, the Rev. Norman of Bristol, Tenn.
    Other survivors include 36 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Emil of Leigh and Otto of Columbus; five sisters, Mrs. Louise Loseke of Richland, Mrs. Helena Loseke, Mrs. Rosa Lueschen, Mrs. Bertha Korte and Mrs. Minnie Kant of Columbus.
    A brother, Louis, and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Otte and Clara, preceded him in death.

GROTELUSCHEN, JOHN H. (January 15, 1845 - January 26, 1895) - [The Columbus Journal, January 30, 1895]
    The Omaha Daily Bee of Monday contains the following from their Leigh correspondent, under date of Jan. 27th, so that the tragedy must have occurred Saturday night. It adds one more to the fearful list of woes attributed directly to the drink habit, and contains a lesson for every man who allows an appetite to usurp the place of reason: "This morning J.H. Grotetoeschen, a prominent and well-to-do Colfax county farmer who lived in Wilson precinct, is lying dead at the home of F.C. Arnall, three miles south of Leigh. Last night Grotetoeschen and another farmer, Fred Muhle, had been drinking heavily, and when they started for home, about 7:30 p.m., were badly intoxicated. About three miles south of town their team evidently started to run. Grotetoeschen fell out and Muhle fell into the bed of the wagon. When the team got home Mrs. Muhle went out and found her husband, took him in and sobered him up. As soon as sober Muhle started out to hunt his companion, and found him about sunrise, lying by the road, near the Arnold place, frozen stiff. A medical examination proved him dead. The coroner was telegraphed for and an inquest will be held. The deceased was a widower, with eight children. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World lodge at this place and his family will get $2,000 life insurance."

    In last week's Journal we printed the telegram to the Bee announcing the death of J.H. Groteluschen of Wilson precinct, Colfax county, the Saturday night before. From the Leigh World we learn that the account was substantially correct. Groteluschen and his companion Fred. Muhle had attended a meeting of the Woodmen of the World until 5, and instead of going home, tarried in town until 8 or a little after. Both drank considerable liquor becoming partially intoxicated, and just before starting home drank two whiskeys each. When Muhle got home his wife heard the team come in. She went out and found her husband lying in the bottom of the wagon in a drunken stupor. She took him in, put him to bed and then put away the team. About half-past 5 Sunday morning Muhle woke up and asked after Groteluschen. Becoming alarmed he went to G's place and told the boys the facts as far as he knew them. Henry and Herman started out with Muhle and found the dead body near F.C. Arnold's place. He had a large bruise on his right temple, evidently where he struck when he fell from the wagon, a small cut on his left temple, and a bruise on the back of his head. Both feet were frozen half way to the knees, both hands were frozen half way up to the elbows; both ears, the nose and one cheek were also frozen. Some attending circumstances and marks in the road where he had crawled through the snow indicated that the dead man had made a heroic struggle for preservation and died within a stone's throw of where help was to be had. From where he fell out of the wagon to where the dead body lay was thirty rods, and within ten rods of Arnold's house. About 12 o'clock Arnold's dogs raised a disturbance, and kept it up so that about 1, Arnold got up and fired a revolver, thinking there were wolves around, and that would scare them away. The dogs ceased their noise about 2. The infernece is that the unfortunate man became conscious about 12 o'clock; that he endeavored to walk but could not; the hands were frozen before he regained consciousness; at times he would get out of the track into the snow, and then work back again; the time occupied was probably the two hours the dogs were noisy. The body when found was lying nearly flat on his back, and was minus cap, overcoat and mittens. The verdict of the jury was that Groteluschen came to his death accidentally, and that death was caused by wounds received by falling from a buggy, exposure to the cold, and freezing. Mr. Groteluschen came to Colfax county direct from Germany twenty-one years ago last June; he had a family of nine children; his wife died in '87 and he lost one son in '93. There are three boys and five girls surviving him, all but one at home. He was a kind and indulgent father to his children, who deeply mourn his death. The World adds: "As a friend and neighbor, all who knew him thought well of him. He was not much addicted to drinking excessively, and did so very seldom."

GROTELUSCHEN, JOHN HENRY (May 7, 1860 - May 1, 1938) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, May 2, 1938, pg. 3, col. 4]
    John Henry Groteluschen, 78, who came to this country from Germany 50 years ago, and who for many years worked as a farm hand on Platte county farms, died at 12, noon, yesterday at St. Mary's hospital, where he was a patient for the past month.
    His health broke two and a half years ago when he suffered a stroke. From that time until he was removed to the hospital, Apr. 1, he lived with his cousin, Mrs. Diedrich Hollman, and Mr. Hollman, at their farm home three and one-half miles southeast of Creston. His death was due to hardening of the arteries.
    The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Groteluschen, he was born at Sage, Oldenburg, Germany, May 7, 1860. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Grossen-Kneten, Apr. 18, 1876. As a young man he served a three-year period in the Oldenburg Infantry regiment, No. 91. In 1888 he came to this country.
    He located first on a farm near Schuyler, where he farmed for himself for a few years. Then he went to work as a hired man on the Hollman farm where he worked for many years. Next he was employed by Siegfried Loseke, in the Bissell neighborhood. He was employed there when he was taken sick.
    Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Katherina Groteluschen of Grossen-Kneten, Germany, and two cousins, Mrs. Hollman, and Louis Behrens, the latter of Cordova, Md.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at the Gass Funeral chapel, with Rev. J.H. Steger, pastor of the Evangelical Protestant church, officiating, and burial will be made in Roselawn Memorial cemetery.

GROTELEUSCHEN, JOHN H. (August 16, 1830 - January 14, 1911) - [The Columbus Journal, January 18, 1911, pg. 1, col. 2]
    John Herman Groteleuschen, aged 80 years, 4 months and 29 days, died Sunday at his home, north of Richland, in Colfax county. Mr. Groteleuschen was born in Oldenburg, Germany, August 16, 1830. He resided there until he grew to manhood and was married before he came to America, which was in 1859, when he settled in Wisconsin. He made that state his home for ten years and then decided to go further west, locating on his homestead in Colfax county in 1869. This has since been his home and it was here he spent the last years of his life. Besides his wife nine children, six daughters and three sons, Mrs. Herman Loseke, Mrs. Wm. Lueke, Mrs. Louis Held, Mrs. Louis Sander, Mrs. John Held, Mrs. D. Kluck, and Louis, August and Carl Groteleuschen, all residents of this locality, survive him. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran church, on Shell creek, and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mueller, and burial was in the cemetery at the church.

    Katherine A. Grotelueschen, 74, of Schuyler, died Wednesday in Schuyler Memorial Hospital after a year-long illness.
    Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Schuyler, with the Rev. Robert J. Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Fullerton Cemetery.
    Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Friday with a prayer service at 7:30 in the Kucera-Rozanek Funreal Chapel, Schuyler.
    Mrs. Grotelueschen wa born Jan. 5, 1906 in Schuyler, daughter of the late Casper and Emma Runge Kehrli. She was married to the late Elmer Grotelueschen Feb. 2, 1927 in Columbus. She attended rural Schuyler schools and lived her entire life in the Schuyler area.
    She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Phyllis) Hoy of North Bend and Mrs. Carl (Shirley) Knapp of Thorton, Colo.; three sons, Donald Grotelueschen of Columbus and Larry and Terry Grotelueschen of Longmont, Colo.
    She is also survived by one brother, Otto Kehrli of Schuyler; one sister, Mrs. Lewis (Emma) Abraham of Schuyler; 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

    Mrs. Adolph Groteluschen, 59, passed away at 3:04 p.m. Friday at the Lutheran hospital where she had been a patient for the past two and one-half months. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the family home and at 2 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran church with Rev. A.H. Guettler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Christ Lutheran cemetery.
    The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Diedrich Finke, she was born June 7, 1888, at Hude, Oldenburg, Germany. In April 1904, she came with her brother and sister to the United States and that same year came to Columbus, Neb. She was employed in Columbus and vicinity and on Feb. 26, 1911, she married John Adolph Groteluschen at Christ Lutheran church. They made their home on a farm in Sherman township until 1926 when they moved to a farm near Columbus where they have since resided.
    She was a member of Christ Lutheran church and transferred her membership to Immanuel Lutheran church when she moved near Columbus. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid and the Women's Missionary League.
    Mrs. Groteluschen was preceded in death by her parents and one sister and is survived by her husband, three sons, Harold and Roland, both of Columbus, Norman of Hickory, N.C., two daughters, Mrs. Otto Barjenbruch of Leigh, Mrs. Fred Gruenhage, Columbus, five stepchildren, Arthur and Ernst, both of Columbus, Paul of Wausau, Wis., Mrs. E.A. Buchholz, Columbus, and Rev. E.T. Groteluschen, Elgin, Ill., 21 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Diedrich Sander, Cordova, Md., and Mrs. Johanna Schultz of Germany, and one brother, Henry Finke of Florida.
    The body will lie in state at the Gass Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday when it will be taken to the home for the service.

    SCHUYLER -- Lavern "Charlie" Groteluschen, 72, of Leigh died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Columbus Community Hospital Inc.
    Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh with the Rev. Matthew Graminske officiating. Burial is at the church cemetery.
    Visitation is 3-7 p.m. today at the church and continues prior to services Thursday with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m.
    Kracl Funeral Chapel of Schuyler is in charge of arrangements.
    Mr. Groteluschen was born March 21, 1927, in Platte County to Charles and Elsie (Deyke) Groteluschen. He attended District 43 School and Columbus High School. He farmed south of Leigh and was a member of the church.
    Survivors include a brother, Norris (Margaret) of Creston; three sisters, Norma (Bob) Fillmer of West Point, Vera (Walter) Hellbusch and Paula Loeffler, all of Columbus.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roy.

    Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memorial cemetery for Lee Alan Grotelueschen, 20, Lincoln, formerly of Columbus.
    The University of Nebraska student died Tuesday at the Baltimore, Md., Cancer Research Center after a lengthy illness. He was a baseball player in the Atlanta Braves farm system during 1968-69.
    Funeral services in Lincoln will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Roper and Sons Mortuary and 10 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Charles A. Reimnetz officiating. The body will lie in state at the mortuary after 6 p.m. today until the funeral.
    Born Aug. 27, 1950 in Columbus, Lee was the son of Elroy E. and Betty Loseke Grotelueschen. He attended Redeemer Lutheran School in Colorado Springs and was graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1968.
    He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln.
    Survivors include his parents; brother, Randy, at home; grandparents, Mrs. Hilda Grotelueschen of Lake Worth, Fla., Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Loseke of West Palm Beach, Fla.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia; brother, Rodney; grandfather, Ernst Grotelueschen of Columbus.

GROTELUESCHEN, LELAND (December 23, 1939 - September 6, 1963) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, September 7, 1963, pg. 1, col. 4]
    Leland A. Grotelueschen, 23, Richland, was accidentally electrocuted while operating an electric welder Friday afternoon at his farm home six miles north of Richland.
    Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Gass Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran church, Shell Creek, with burial in Calvary cemetery. Pastor W.H. Saas will officiate. The body will lie in state at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Monday.
    Born Dec. 23, 1939 at Columbus, Leland was the son of Herbert and Esther Klug Groteluschen. He attended District 8 school, Colfax county, and graduated from Schuyler high school in 1959.
    After his graduation he farmed with his father, and more recently was employed by the Carl Aerni Construction company as a heavy equipment operator. He had attended the Gale Institute of Heavy Equipment in Indianapolis last winter.
    Baptized and confirmed at St. John's church, Shell Creek, he had served as president of the Luther League and as an usher.
    He was a private first class in the U.S. Army Reserve.
    Surviving are his parents and a younger brother, Allen, at home. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Klug, Columbus, and Mr. and Mrs. August Grotlueschen, Richland.

    Mrs. Walter (Loretta) Groteluschen, 79, of 1960 18th Avenue, died Friday in the Columbus Hospital.
    Funeral rites will be conducted by Rev. Paul Rowoldt, 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation after 1 p.m. Sunday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home; 10-11 a.m. Monday at church.
    She was born May 24, 1899 at Palmer, where she received her education. Her parents were the late Karl and Anna (Kruse) Leffelbein. Married to Walter Groteluschen, Jan. 8, 1924 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, she lived many years in the Genoa-Monroe area, moving to Columbus in 1963.
    She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Friendly Neighbors Extension Club.
    Mrs. Groteluschen is survived by her husband; four children, Wayne, Mrs. Louis (Phyllis) Witte, Mrs. Richard (Bonita) Boysen and Larry; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

GROTELUESCHEN, LOUIS H. (June 3, 1860 - March 21, 1918) - [The Columbus Telegram, March 22, 1918, pg. 16, col. 2]
    An illness of a year's duration resulted in the death of Louis Henry Grotelueschen at his farm home 16 miles northeast of Columbus about 1 a.m. yesterday. Mr. Grotelueschen was born in Oshkosh, Wis., June 3, 1860. He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1876, and spent the remainder of his life in Platte county. On December 13, 1888 he and Miss Rose Lena Rickert were married at the Shell Creek church. They made their home on the farm in the Boheet neighborhood until ten years ago when they moved to Columbus. Mrs. Grotelueschen passed away April 1, 1913, and later Mr. Grotelueschen returned to the farm to reside. He leaves four daughters and two sons, Jennie, Lydia, Pauline, Rose, Arthur and Greeley Grotelueschen, all at home. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Walters, of Lincoln, at the family residence at 1 p.m. Saturday and burial will be made in the Shell Creek cemetery.

GROTELUESCHEN, LOUISA (July 6, 1878 - July 7, 1878)

    Death of Pioneer Woman--Mrs. Henry Grotelueschen, member of a prominent pioneer family of Platte county and a resident of the community more than 60 years, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital at 10:10 a.m. Sunday. Death was due to heart trouble from which she had suffered for many years. She had been in poor health much of her life, and her condition became serious about two months ago. After spending six weeks in the hospital here, she was able to be removed to the home of her son, Charles, near Leigh, but there she was confined to her bed most of the time. Last Thursday, following a relapse, she was again taken to the hospital. Her condition became critical Saturday and death came Sunday morning. The funeral will be held from the home of Charles Grotelueschen, near Leigh, Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. and from the Loseke Creek Christ Lutheran church at 2 p.m. Rev. Kaiser, of Zion Lutheran church, Leigh, will officiate. The body will lie in state at the Henry Gass funeral home Tuesday forenoon. As Louisa Kumpf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kumpf, she was born at Florence, Ohio, June 21, 1859. In her early youth she came to Platte county with her parents, the family homesteading in the Shell creek community. On Oct. 23, 1877 she was married to Henry Grotelueschen, their wedding taking place in the Loseke creek church. They made their home on a farm 16 miles northeast of Columbus until the death of Mr. Grotelueschen on Nov. 19, 1912. After that time Mrs. Grotelueschen spent much of her time in the homes of her children, and during the last two years spent much of her time in the home of her son, Charles. She was mother of 10 children, of whom seven preceded her in death. Three sons survive--William and Charles, residing near Leigh and Henry, of Denver. She leaves also one sister, Mrs. William Bucher, of Columbus, two half sisters, Mrs. L. H. Leavy, of Columbus and Mrs. William Reese, of Kearney, three half-brothers, Henry Loseke, of Columbus; Louis Loseke, of the Loseke creek community, and August Loseke, of Columbus, and 11 grandchildren.

GROTELUSCHEN, LUDWIG (died October 24, 1893--son of H & C M)

GROTELUESCHEN, MARGARET (July 21, 1864 - April 21, 1947) - [The Leigh World, originally published, May 2, 1947 - republished January 24, 2001]
    Funeral services were [held for] Mrs. Margaret Grotelueschen, who died April 21, at the Lutheran Hospital, Columbus, were held at the home of her son, Ernest Grotelueschen, and at St. John's CHurch, south of Creston. Rev. L.L. Ochs officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Born in Holstein, Germany, July 21, 1864, she came to this country with her parents when she was a child of three years. Her maiden name was Margaret Boe. After short residence in Illinois, the family came to Platte county.
    She grew to young womanhood here and was married to Henry Hellbusch in 1881. He died in 1893. In the following year she married William Grotelueschen and they farmed south of Creston until they retired in 1931 and moved to Columbus. Mr. Grotelueschen died in 1935. Both were loyal members of St. John's Lutheran Church.
    Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. F.W. Meinke, of Kramer; Mrs. Herman Inselman of Creston; and Mrs. William Becher of Columbus; five sons, Herman Hellbusch of Columbus, Otto Hellbusch of Norfolk, Ernst Grotelueschen of Creston, Paul Grotelueschen of Seattle, Washington; and Enno Grotelueschen of Creston; 39 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; one sister, Miss Emma Boe of Shickley; and two brothers, Ed Boe of St. Edward and Emil Boe of Bakersfield, California.
    She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Mueller, of Columbus, and Mrs. Otto Cordes of Wyckoff, New Jersey; one son, William Grotelueschen of Columbus, and two children who died in infancy.

    Mrs. M. Marie Grotelueschen, 72, of 1305 8th St., Columbus, died Monday at her home.
    Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, with Rev. Ernest Smith officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Friday prior to the service. Burial is in Roselawn Cemetery.

    Mrs. Grotelueschen was born Jan. 9, 1912, at Leigh, the daughter of Joel F. and Wealtha Best Bridges. She graduated from Leigh High School in 1930, and married Enno Grotelueschen Jan. 28, 1933, at Plymouth.
    The couple resided in the Leigh, Creston and Columbus areas. Mrs. Grotelueschen taught school at District 21 Platte Center for two years. She also worked at Columbus Community Hospital. Mrs. Grotelueschen was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church.
    Surviving are a grand-daughter, Linda (Mrs. George) Saidler of San Antonio, Texas; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank of Fremont; and three sisters, Leona (Mrs. Harry) Satchell of Dubuque, Iowa, Dorothy (Mrs. Ralph) Kreitman of Rapid City, S.D., and Delores McGee of Fremont.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters, two sisters and two brothers.

    Marlin F. Grotelueschen, 23, Columbus, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Lutheran hospital after an illness of several months. He had undergone surgery in February.
    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gass Funeral chapel and at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. A.H. Guettler, pastor, officiating. Burial wil be in St. John's cemetery.
    The body will lie in state at the Gass chapel after 11 a.m. Friday.
    Marlin Franklin Grotelueschen, the son of Ernst and Hilda Mueller Grotelueschen, was born in Platte county on Oct. 25, 1932. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran church and received his early education at St. John's parochial school.
    After his graduation from Columbus High school in 1950, he attended St. John's College, Winfield, Kans., and Concordia Teachers College at Seward, where he received his Bachelor of Science in education. While in college, he lettered in baseball all four years and was co-captain of the team during his senior year.
    Mr. Grotelueschen also attended summer school at the University of Nebraska. The past year he served as principal of Our Savior's Lutheran school in Lake Worth, Fla.
    He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Columbus and was a former Walther League member at St. John's Lutheran church.
    Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Hilda Grotelueschen of Columbus; three brothers, Melvin of Columbus, Elroy of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Arden, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Lola) Bargmann of Denver and Mrs. Jerome (Darleen) Mihulka of Columbus; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Mueller of Columbus.
    He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1948; a brother, Norbert, in 1927, an infant brother; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Grotelueschen.
    Henry Flesner and Herman Cattau will be in charge of memorials at the church.

GROTELUESCHEN, MARTHA (1897 - 1937) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, September 20, 1937, pg. 6, col. 2]
    Funeral services for Mrs. Conrad Grotelueschen, 40, who died at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lutheran Good Samaritan hospital, following a short illness, will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the home, six miles northeast of Columbus, and at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran church, 14 miles northeast of Columbus. Rev. H.L. Borneman, pastor, will officiate, and burial will be made in the cemetery near the church. The body was taken home this afternoon from the Gass Funeral home. Mrs. Grotelueschen was stricken at 6:30 a.m. last Wednesday, about an hour after she had gotten up for the day. She was preparing the breakfast, when she suffered a stroke of apoplexy, and she sank to the floor unconscious. Taken immediately to the hospital, she remained in a coma until her death. As Miss Martha Louisa Mueller, the daughter of Otto Mueller, well-known Grand Prairie township farmer, she was born on Apr. 24, 1897 at the Mueller farm home. There she grew to womanhood, and recived her education in the rural schools. Her marriage to Mr. Grotelueschen took place on Apr. 24, 1919 at St. John's Lutheran church, near her home. They established their home on his farm 2 1/2 miles southeast of Christ Lutheran Church in Colfax county, where they resided for nine years. From there they moved to the farm where she was residing at the time of her death. Mrs. Grotelueschen was a devout member of the Lutheran faith. Before her marriage she attended St. John's church, and later became a member of Christ Lutheran church and was a charter member of the latter's Ladies' Aid society. Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Miss Esther, 17, Vernetta, 15, Luetta, 11, and Dorothy, 7; her father, Otto Mueller; her step-mother, Mrs. Otto Mueller; two brothers, Walter and Emil Mueller, of Platte Center, and a sister, Miss Adele, at home. She was preceded in death by her mother, who died in 1913, and a brother, Hugo, who died five years ago.

GROTELUESCHEN, MATILDA (August 27, 1876 - May 12, 1907) - [The Columbus Journal, May 15, 1907]
    A very sad death was that of Mrs. Matilda Groteleuschen, wife of Anolph [sic] Groteleuschen of Sherman township. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilkin of Sherman township, where she was born and grew to womanhood. She was married to Adolph Groteleuschen October 27, 1896, and five children are left to mourn the loss of a kind mother, four boys and one girl, the oldest one nine years and the youngest one year. Besides her husband she leaves a father and mother and one brother and one sister, Emil Wilken and Mrs. August Loseke. After years of hard work Mr. Groteleuschen was just completing a beautiful home and preparing to enjoy life, when his help meet [sic] was called. The funeral on Tuesday was one of the largest ever held in that locatity [sic], and was conducted by Rev. Deninger of the Loseke Creek church and the burial was in the cemetery at the church.

    Melvin A. Grotelueschen, 2671 33rd Avenue, died Sunday in Behlen Community Hosptal at the age of 55. A lifetime resident of the Columbus area, he was a cabinet maker and World War II veteran.
    The funeral will be Tuesday, 3:15 p.m. family prayer service ad 3:30 p.m. funeral rites at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Otto Schlegelmilch officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
    The body will lie in state at Gass-Haney Funeral Home 5-9 p.m. today and until 2 p.m. Tuesday; 2:30-3:30 p.m. at church.
    Son of Ernst A. and Hilda (Mueller) Grotelueschen, he was born Feb. 2, 1920 in Platte County; attended St. John Lutheran School north of Columbus and served in the Army, 1941-45. He married Margaret Raabe, June 29, 1945 at St. John Lutheran Church, Beemer.
    A charter member of Peace Lutheran Church, he participated in many church activities. He was a former member of Chamber of Commerce.
    Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Kathleen of Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Steven (Beth) Slonecker and and Kay of Columbus; one son, James of Gig Harbor, Wash.; mother, Mrs. Hilda Grotelueschen of Lake Worth, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Lola) Bargmann and Mrs. Darleen Mihulka, both of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Dr. Arden of Urbana, Ill.; grandmother, Mrs. F.H. Mueller of Columbus.
    He was preceded in death by his father; brothers, Norbert, Marlin, Elroy and another in infancy.

    Mrs. Minnie Grotelueschen, living ten miles northeast of Columbus, died last night about 10:30 o'clock after a brief illness. She had been suffering for two or three weeks from an attack of rheumatism, which had not been considered of a serious nature until yesterday when her heart became affected.
    Mrs. Grotelueschen was thirty-five years of age at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband, Otto Grotelueschen; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dirks; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Luedtke, of Creston, and Ricka and Lena Dirks, at home; two brothers, Diedrich and George Dirks.
    Definite arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made, but the services will probably take place Sunday morning at the Loseke Creek church.

    Norbert W. Grotelueschen, 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Grotelueschen, died Sunday in a hospital in Rochester, Minn. Death was due to tumor of the brain, with which he had been suffering for the past six weeks. He had been at the hospital in Rochester for the past week and underwent an operation there Saturday, but was unable to rally. Mr. and Mrs. Grotelueschen, who were with their son at Rochester, accompanied the body to Columbus on Union Pacific train No. 17 this afternoon. The body will be taken to the family home 15 miles north of the city and the funeral arrangements will be announced later. Norbert was enrolled as a pupil at St. John's Lutheran parochial school this fall and attended classes regularly until he became ill. He is survived by his parents, two brothers and one sister. He is a grandson of Supervisor and Mrs. William Grotelueschen of the Creston neighborhood, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Mueller, of Columbus. The funeral services will be held Wednesday. Brief services will be held at the family home at 1 o'clock to be followed by services at St. John's Lutheran church at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Holm, pastor of the church, will conduct the services.

    Mr. Grotelueschen was born June 1, 1922, at Schuyler, the son of Edward and Theresa Vrba Grotelueschen. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1941, and married Florence Brunken March 12, 1947, at Concordia, Kan.
    Mr. Grotelueschen resided in Norfolk for 17 years, and Madison, moving to Columbus in 1968. He was a truck driver for Nash-Finch for 17 years before owning and operating the Jack and Jill grocery store in Madison. He then worked for Becton-Dickinson until his retirement in 1985.
    Mr. Grotelueschen was a sergeant in the 353rd Bombardment Group campaigns in Air-Offensive Europe during World War II. He served in Ardennes, central Europe, northern France, Tunisia, Sicily, air combat Bulkans, Rhineland, Napels-Foggia, Rome-Arno, and southern France. He received the Bronze Star.
    Surviving are his wife, Florence of Columbus; three daughters, Rana of Columbus, Renee (Mrs. Ken) Kosch of David City and Rita of Boulder City, Nev.; and a brother, Harold E. of Columbus.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.
    Eight children survive: Clarence, Eugene and Martin of Leigh; Mrs. LeRoy (Velma) Frese of Columbus; Edna of Seward; Mrs. Reinhold (Anna) Bock of Readlyn, Iowa; Mrs. Paul (Evelyn) Mueller of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Frederick (Rose Marie) Graft of Fort Wayne, Ind.
    Also surviving are 23 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Gottlieb Wilke of Columbus; sister, Irene Wilke of Canby, Ore.

    Ptomaine poisoning, and complications, caused the death of Mrs. Rosa Lena Grotelueschen, wife of Louis H. Grotelueschen, Tuesday at 5:15 a.m. Mrs. Grotelueschen ate some canned meat Sunday afternoon, and it is thought that brought on her trouble. Funeral services were held at the family residence in town at 10:30 a.m. today and at the Shell Creek Lutheran church at 1 p.m. Rev. Neumarker officiated. Mrs. Grotelueschen was a native of Platte county, being a daughter of Henry Rickert. She was born December 20, 1870. She leaves a husband and five children.

    He married Lorraine Fendrick Dec. 10, 1946, at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. He was a farmer and lifetime Platte County and Creston area resident.
    He served in the Army during World War II from 1945-46.
    He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Creston American Legion.
    Survivors include his wife; two sons, Merlin and Kevin, both of Columbus; four daughters, Susan Rickert of Columbus; Jan Oeltjen of Portland, Ore., Donna Scheler of Wray, Colo., and JoAnn Johnson of Lincoln; two brothers, Norris of Creston and Lavern of Leigh; three sisters, Jeanne Fillmer of West Point, and Vera Hellbusch and Paula Loeffler, both of Columbus; 15 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

    Mrs. Ruth K. Clausen Groteluschen, 80, of Columbus died Thursday at Columbus Community Hospital after a three-week illness.

    Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday at McKown Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at Immanuel Lutheran Church Monday. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the church.
    Mrs. Groteluschen was born Jan. 11, 1901 in Stanton County to Henry and Marie (Vatthauer) Landwehr.
    She was married to her first husband, Albert Clausen, Feb. 9, 1921 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Clausen died in 1941 and she married Conrad Groteluschen Jan. 29, 1950. A housewife, she also was an employee of Reece Wooden Sole Shoe Company for 21 years before her retirement.
    She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fellowship League, Country Ladies Aid and several women's clubs.
    Survivors include one son, Harold H. Clausen, Columbus; one daughter, Mrs. Ted (Dorothy) Matzen, Escondido, Calif.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Martha Behle, and one brother, Walter Landwehr Sr., Columbus.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Albert Clausen in 1941 and Conrad Groteluschen in 1959; brother, Arnold Landwehr; and sister, Mrs. Herbert (Meta) Arndt.

    CRESTON, Oct. 7 (Special) -- Shirley Grotelueschen, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Enno Grotelueschen, died Friday at Children's Memorial hospital, Omaha.
    Shirley had become ill on July 6, and was first hospitalized at the Lutheran hospital, Columbus, then twice in Omaha. She underwent major surgery in July at the Children's Memorial hospital.
    She was born in Creston on Nov. 5, 1939. She attended St. John's Lutheran church, and had completed the fifth grade in the Creston school. Last year she had been cheer leader in the grammar room.
    Immediate survivors are her parents, one older sister, Arlette Jane.
    Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the family home in Creston and at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church, south of Creston. The Rev. R.L. Ochs will officiate and burial will be made in Roselawn Memorial park, Columbus.

    Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Sunday and 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and 1-2 p.m. Monday, with a 1:45 p.m. family prayer service at the church.
    Mr. Groteluschen was born March 12, 1902, to Louis and Anna (Ahrens) Groteluschen in Grey, Iowa.
    He married Loretta B. Leffelbein Jan. 8, 1924, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He lived in the Genoa-Monroe area most of his life, moving to Columbus in 1963 and Syracuse in 1990. He was a farmer.
    He served on the Genoa and Monroe school boards, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
    Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Witte of Syracuse and Bonita Boysen of Omaha; two sons, Larry of Monroe and Wayne of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters, Ruth Groteluschen of Batavia, Ill., and Rosa Keat of Manning, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his wife in 1979, four brothers and two sisters.
    Memorials may be sent to donors' choice.

    William Grotelueschen, 86, Schuyler, died Wednesday at Schuyler Memorial Hospital. Funeral rites will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Schuyler, with burial in Christ Lutheran Cemetery. His body will lie in state at Kucera-Rozanek Chapel, 9 a.m. Friday until noon Saturday; then at church until time of the service.

GROTELUSCHEN, WILLIAM, JR. - (August 28, 1901 - October 19, 1943) [The Columbus Daily Telegram, October 20, 1943, pg. 2, col. 2]
    Funeral services for William H. Groteluschen, 42, who died at 4:50 p.m. yesterday at Lutheran hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran church with Rev. A.H. Guettler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery. Mr. Grotluschen had been a patient at the hospital since Aug. 5 and has been ailing since January.
    Born Aug. 28, 1901, in Grand Prairie township, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Groteluschen, he was married in April, 1922, to Miss Ella Fittje. In 1924 they moved to Nance county where he farmed for nine or 10 years after which they moved back to Platte county where the family has since resided. Mr. Groteluschen was in the trucking business from the time the family moved from Nance county. They have lived in Columbus the past three years.
    Mr. Groteluschen was a communicant of Immanuel Lutheran church here.
    He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. William Groteluschen; five daughters, Misses Evelyn, Verna, Janis, Ruth and Joyce; two sisters, Mrs. William Becher and Mrs. Olga Cordes, the latter of Wyckoff, N.J.; three brothers, Ernst and Enno of Creston and Paul of Portland, Ore., two half sisters, Mrs. F.W. Meinke of Denver and Mrs. Herman Inselman of Creston; and two half brothers, Herman Hellbusch of Columbus and Otto Hellbusch of Norfolk.
    The body will lie in state at the Gass Funeral home from 4 p.m. Thursday until 9:30 a.m. Friday when it will be taken to the family home where it will be until the hour of the service.

GROTELUSCHEN, WILLIAM, SR. (April 17, 1870 - July 13, 1935) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, July 13, 1935, pg. 6, col. 3]
    William Groteluschen, 65, 2805 Twenty-first street, former member of the county board of supervisors and for many years a prominent farmer in Grand Prairie township, passed away at 2:30 a.m. today at Lutheran Good Samaritan hospital. His death was due to cancer.
    Mr. Groteluschen's health began to fail last fall. After learning the nature of his affliction, he went to Rochester, Minn., in January to consult the Mayo clinic. Informed that he had not many months to live, he returned home, accepting the verdict with characteristic courage, and maintaining, as much as it was possible for a man to do under the circumstances, the cheerful, kindly disposition that he had always had.
    Though he had not been bedfast, he entered the hospital Sunday, realizing that the end was near. Death came while he slept last night.
    Born in Grossenkneten, Oldenburg, Germany, Apr. 17, 1870, Mr. Groteluschen came to America alone in November, 1887, when he was 17 years old, to join his brother, Henry Groteluschen, who was farming north of Columbus.
    He worked for his brother on the latter's farm until his marriage to Mrs. Margaret Hellbusch, in the St. John's community, on Nov 13, 1894, and then he went to farming for himself. After renting for a few years, they bought the farm in Grand Prairie township, about 36 years ago, where they made their home until they retired from active farm life and moved into Columbus four years ago.
    Mr. Groteluschen was elected supervisor from Dist. No. 1, comprising Grand Prairie, Sherman and Creston townships, in the fall of 1922, and served eight consecutive years as a member of the county board, having been reelected in November, 1926.
    Faithful and conscientious, he served his district and the county to the very best of his ability, always doing that which he believed to be the right thing to do.
    At the expiration of his second term, he retired from the board and shortly thereafter moved into the city to spend his remaining years.
    He was a devout member of St. John's Lutheran church for 36 years and served as an elder of the church for eight years. After moving into town, he transferred his membership to Immanuel Lutheran church.
    Mr. Groteluschen is survived by his wife; seven sons and daughters, Ernest, Paul, Enno and William Grotelueschen, Mrs. Emma Becher and Mrs. Lucy Mueller, all residing in the territory between Creston and Columbus, and Mrs. Otto Cordes, of Syckoff, N.J. and the following step-children, Mrs. Mathilda Meinke, of Davenport, Neb., Mrs. Herman Inselmann, of the Grand Prairie community, and Herman Hellbusch, near Columbus. He leaves also one brother, Henry Grotelueschen, of Columbus; a sister, Anna, residing in Germany; 21 grandchildren and 14-step-grandchildren. Mrs. Cordes came last week from New Jersey for a visit with her parents.
    Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran church, 13 miles north and a mile west of Columbus, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, following a brief prayer service at the home in Columbus at 1 p.m., it having been his wish that the last rites be held in St. John's church. Burial will be made in the cemetery near the church. Rev. A.H. Guettler, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran, will conduct the services, and Rev. Theo. Harms, pastor of St. John's, will assist. The body will lie in state at the Gass funeral home until Tuesday morning.

LOSEKE, ANNA M. (GROTELUSCHEN) (May 10, 1810 - August 8, 1879)

LOSEKE, EMILIE (GROTTELUESCHEN) (1859 - 1926) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, September 6, 1926]
    Mrs. Emilie Loseke, who came to Nebraska with her parents in 1868, died at her home 10 1/2 miles northeast of Richland, Sunday at 7:15 p.m. Death climaxing an illness of three weeks, 12 days of which she was bedfast, was attributed to heart trouble and accompanying complications. As Emilie Grottelueschen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johan H. Grottelueschen, she was born Jan. 5, 1859 at Mavilla, Wis. She was married to Herman Loseke at Loseke Creek church May 7, 1878 and made her home on the farm northeast of Richland until her death. She leaves three sons and one daughter, Alfred, Siegfried and Erich Loseke, on farms near Schuyler and Mrs. Robert Welch, of Leigh. She is also survived by two brothers and three sisters, August at Leigh, Charles of Schuyler, Mrs. Wm. Loseke of Schuyler, Mrs. Louis Sander of Creston and Mrs. Dave Kluck of Richland. There are 12 grandchildren. The funeral will be held at noon Wednesday from the home, and at 1 p.m. from the Shell Creek Lutheran church. Rev. Welchert will officiate. Interment will be in the Shell Creek cemetery.

MENTINK, JENNIE (GROTELUESCHEN) (November 20, 1889 - November 21, 1958) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, November 26, 1958, pg. 2, col. 1-2]
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Osceola, for Mrs. Jennie Mentink, 69, formerly of Columbus, who died last Friday in the Osceola hospital. Burial was in Calvary cemetery at Shell Creek with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiated at the gravesite rites.
    Mrs. Mentink, the former Jennie Grotelueschen, was born at Schuyler on Nov. 20, 1889, the daughter of Louis and Rose Grotelueschen. She spent most of her life in Schuyler and Columbus communities.
    She was married to Garrett Mentink of Osceola May 25, 1943, and he passed away Oct. 1, 1955.
    Mrs. Mentink joined St. Paul's Lutheran church of Osceola in 1947, and took an active part in church activities. She was in failing health the past year.
    One of seven children, she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Trofholz of Norfolk, Mrs. Pauline Speckman of Colby, Kans., Mrs. Rose Schlax of Bloomington, Calif., and two brothers, Greeley Grotelueschen of Stockton, Calif., and Arthur Grotelueschen of Council Bluffs, Ia. One brother, Harry preceded her in death.

MUELLER, LUCIE (GROTELUESCHEN) (May 5, 1899 - January 12, 1937) - [The Columbus Daily Telegram, January 12, 1937, pg. 8, col. 2]
    Following a lingering illness of two and a half years' duration, Mrs. Ernst Mueller, 37, residing on a farm 12 miles northwest of Columbus, died at 9:15 a.m. today at her home. She had undergone two operations in 1934 in seeking relief from a cancerous condition. Since last Aug. 1, she had been bedfast at her home. Miss Lucie Theresa Grotelueschen was born on May 5, 1899, in Grand Prairie township, Platte county, and spent her entire life in that same neighborhood. On Sept. 16, 1917, she was united in marriage to Ernst Mueller. Eight sons and daughters were born to this union--Lawrence, 18, and a twin sister, Florence, who died Jan. 25, 1930, Amanda, 15, Lorna, 11, Muriel, who died Jan. 18, 1931, Elmer 8, and twins, Leila and Lola, 5. Besides her husband and sons and daughters, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Margareta Grotelueschen, of Columbus; four brother, Ernst, William, Paul and Enno Grotelueschen, all of Columbus; two sisters, Mrs. William Becher, of Columbus, and Mrs. Olga Cordes, of Wyckhoff, N.J.; two half brothers, Herman and Otto Hellbusch, of Columbus, and two half sisters, Mrs. F.W. Memke, of Davenport, Neb., and Mrs. H. Inselmann, of Columbus. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, north west of Columbus, and services will be held there at 1:30 p.m. Friday, preceded by short services at 1 p.m. at the home. Rev. Theodore Harms, pastor, will officiate, and burial will be made in St. John's cemetery. The body will be taken home Thursday from the Gass Funeral home.

OTTE, IDA (GROTELUESCHEN) (December 9, 1869 - January 1, 1908) - [The Columbus Journal, January 8, 1908, pg. 1, col. 6]
    The funeral of Mrs. Fred Otte, who died New Years, was held last Friday at the German Lutheran church on Loseke creek, Rev. Deninger conducting the services. Mrs. Otte was a daughter of Mrs. John Grotelueschen and was thirty-seven years of age.

RICKERT, C. M. (GROTELUSCHEN) (August 18, 1818 - October 14, 1900)

SPECKMAN, PAULINE (GROTELUESCHEN) (July 28, 1898 - February 13, 1982) - [Columbus Telegram, February 15, 1982, pg. 2, col. 3]
    COLBY, Kan.--Former Platte County resident Pauline J. Speckman, 83, died Saturday at Thomas County Hospital in Colby, Kan.
    Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday at Harrison Chapel in Colby. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery Shell Creek with Rev. L.E. Mortensen officiating. Visitation will be 8:30-10 a.m. Tuesday at Gass-Haney Chapel in Columbus.
    Mrs. Speckman was born in Columbus on July 28, 1898, the daughter of Louis and Rosa Lena Rikert Groteluschen.
    She was married to Herman Speckman and was a former Platte County resident.
    Survivors include two daughters, Anita Golden and Lorene Curtin, both of Colby; two sons, Gerald and Carroll, both of Denver; one brother, Greeley Groelueschen and one sister, Rosaline Schlax.
    The family has requested memorials to Thomas County Hospital Association in Colby, Kan.

TROFHOLZ, LYDIA (GROTELUESCHEN) (November 28, 1892 - November 22, 1970) - [The Columbus Telegram, November 24, 1970, pg. 5, col. 4]
    Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia H. Trofholz, 77, who died Sunday at Morys Haven, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Gass-Haney Funeral Chapel with Rev. H.M. Rathkamp officiating.
    Her body will lie in state at the chapel after 4 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
    Except for a few years, Mrs. Trofholz spent her lifetime in the Columbus community. She was employed by Daniel Studio until she retired.
    Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Grotelueschen, she was born Nov. 28, 1892 in Colfax County.
    In Columbus she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies Aid as long as she was able.
    Surviving are two brothers and two sisters: Arthur W. Grotelueschen of Council BLuffs, Iowa; Greeley E. Grotelueschen of Citrus Heights, Calif.; Mrs. Pauline Speckman of Colby, Kan.; Mrs. Rosaline Schlax of Bloomington, Calif.
