OCONEE TOWNSHIP


NOTE: Approximate locations of the Oconee Township school districts can be found on the standard township map. Oconee Township is located in Township 17 North, Ranges 2 and 3 West (T17N, R2W and R3W), north of the Loup River. Please refer to the township map on the first page for more detail. Section numbers (S) are given as a reference point only and are as found in the 1899 Atlas. In some cases, the buildings were moved or a new building constructed nearby which may have resulted in the school locating in a different section.
According to The History of Platte County, Nebraska by Margaret Curry (1950), "Early census reports show local district directors to be W. D. Wilson, Oliver Magnusson, E. M. Vaught and Joseph Webster."
District No. 6 (S5, T17N, R3W) - organized June, 1869

Early teacher: Miss May Mahler (1901/1902)

Early board members:

Dissolved November 1, 1966 and became a part of Nance County School District No. 3.


District No. 13 (S8, T17N, R3W) - On April 6, 1872, part of District No. 13 was attached to District No. 4.

Early teacher: Miss W. M. Young (1901/1902)

Early board members:

District was dissolved July 16, 1963.


District No. 25 (S12, T17N, R2W) - "Oconee" was organized April 8, 1872.

According to the March 5, 1886 Columbus Democrat, during February there were 33 pupils enrolled with an average daily attendance of 24. Fred Wileke, Teacher.

Early board members:


District No. 55 (S11, T17N, R3W) - "Matson" (Sandhill Univ.) was formed March 1, 1878.

Early teacher: Miss Anna Mylet (1901/1902)

Early board members:

School District was dissolved July 25, 1959.


District No. 76 (S1, T17N, R3W) - District 76 was established December 27, 1890, after a petition had been signed by more than two-thirds of the legal voters of District 27 requesting that the latter be divided, and a part of it designated as District 76. District No. 27 was divided on January 17, 1891 between sections 5 and 6 (Mannington Road)
