COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS - HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Report of school nursing for the month ending December 31, 1920.
There were but thirteen school days during the months. Visits were made to 21 schools.

Pupils inspected 101
Pupils appearing to have defective tonsils 29
Pupils appearing to have defective nasal breathing 20
Pupils appearing to have defective hearing 6
Pupils appearing to have defective vision 20
Pupils having defective teeth 25
Pupils appearing to have goiter 1
Visits made 45
Talks to children in class 20
Children in the Lutheran school and St. Francis Academy were weighed for the first time this fall. 40% were found underweight. Children in St. Anthony's school have not been weighed this year, as no scales have been provided for this school.

Sample tubes of Colgates tooth paste were distributed to all children up to the fourth grade. With but few exceptions, the children have individual tooth brushes.

When the teeth cleaning campaign was started the Sister Superior of St. Anthony's school bought out a stock of brushes from Speice & Bower's at wholesale, so that each child in that school was able to buy a tooth brush for ten cents.

One little child of seven, attending the first ward school, was found to have very defective vision with a bad case of strobismus as well. The parents were financially unable to do anything for the child. The child's eyes have been treated and glasses provided by Dr. C.H. Campbell. This same family of seven was found to be sleeping together in one room, the four children on the floor. Through the kindness of Mrs. Lightner and others, two beds have been provided so that not more that [sic] two are sleeping in one bed and two instead of one room are now used for sleeping purposes. Through the kindness of the girls scouts, Mrs. Lightner and others, clothing, food (canned fruit) and toys were provided for this family at Christmas time.

Reports of School Nursing Activities - April 1921

During the year all children in the grades were given a general physical inspection. In addition to this inspection, teeth were carefully looked over three times for signs of decay, and other defects of dentation.

In September, several cases of diphtheria broke out, beginning in the schools of the First and Third Wards, later spreading to the Second and Fourth Wards with two cases in the Lutheran School.

Throat and nose cultures were taken from all children in the class room, after the outbreak of each new case of diphtheria. This resulted in finding one or more carriers of diphtheria bacilli each time.

The discovery, and exclusion from school of these carriers undoubtedly did much to limit the spread of the disease.

In October the Schick test was given to over one thousand children at the schools. A number of the physicians gave their services free of charge. 60% of the children showed a positive reaction to the test. A very small percentage of these positive cases have been immunized with the toxin-anti-toxin.

The majority of parents do not feel that they can afford to spend the money, while others are unwilling or think it unnecessary.

Where immunization against diphtheria has been carried on to any extent in a community it has usually been financed either by the City Health Department or the local chapter of the Red Cross.

In the early part of the year a Health Campaign was put on in the schools, known as the Modern Health Crusade. As this depends largely upon co-operation with the home as well as the teachers, it has been about 40% successful in helping the children to establish good health habits. This campaign is considered successful if 33% of the school children develop good health habits by faithful performance of the health chores.

More attention is being given the children's teeth than formerly. A larger percentage have had dental treatment than the preceding year.

The boys and girls in general, show a decided interest in their own well being, especially those who were below normal weight, bringing themselves up to normal and above by their own efforts.

Since February First, a milk lunch has been served every morning to forty children 7% or more underweight in the Second Ward School. At first some of the children did not like milk, but all have responded well in drinking it. Most of them have shown a marked increase in weight. The milk is paid for, from the proceeds of Christmas Seals last year. Some of the children pay from five to ten cents each week.

The teachers have co-operated splendidly with this work in giving their time and interest. The Second Ward was selected for this demonstration on account of the large percentage of children having very little if any milk in their diet.

Many of them do not eat sufficient or the right kind of food, especially in the morning. This is true in general not because of poverty but very often time is not taken to prepare or eat a good breakfast. A surprisingly large number of adults care little to eat much food in the morning and so fail to consider the needs of growing children.

The teachers weigh the children in the grades each month, except in the parochial schools, where it has been done by the school nurse.

An attempt is being made to interest the mothers in bringing their children under school age to the school to be weighed and measured as well as having a general inspection. The aim is to reach the child at as early an age as possible.

Respectfully submitted, Edith J. Whiteley, R.N.

COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS - Department of Health

Report of Health work for months ending Sept., Oct. and Nov. 1922
No. of visits made to schools 123
No. of room inspections of pupils 126
Talks to pupils in class 136
Talks to parents 76
No. of General Physical examinations 1060
Underweight 7% of more 43%
Home visits 79

Contagious diseases as follows: --

Pediculosis---five children,
Diphtheria---four families excluded,
Impetigo---seven,
Whooping Couch [sic]---Seven families,
Typhoid fever---one family,
Scabies or itch---eight families,
Fifty-two throat cultures were taken during November.
During September, October and November the nurse has been spending most of her time giving the general physical examinations. Our schools have been exceptionally free from contagious diseases or sickness of any kind.

Considerable time has been given to the nutrition work. In September we had about fifty per cent of our pupils over seven per cent underweight. This was partly due to the excessive warm weather. We have used several methods to encourage the children to increase their weight and have met with good cooperation from the parents and children. All of the children have gained some in weight and a good many have come up to normal. We put sixty-five pupils on a mid-morning milk lunch. We have taken fifteen of these off the list as they have gained their normal weight. The money for this milk is the proceeds from last year's Christmas seals. The Tuesday Afternoon Club donated $10.00 toward this fund. The nurse has sent out to the teachers suggestions for teaching health and hygiene each month. We are emphasizing cleanliness and having a morning inspection. We have tooth brushes as prizes to the children who came clean regularly. These brushes cost us five cents each.

In the third ward the nurse located a child with diphtheria. She insisted that the child have a doctor who quarantined the family. From exposure to this case two other cases developed. Throat cultures were taken from all the pupils in this exposed room and three diphtheria carriers were found. These were reported to the city physician who excluded and treated each case. At this time we have no new cases.

We have several cases of whooping-cough in the first ward. As these cases are not placarded it is difficult to check the spread of it because the affected ones go to movies and other public places.

We will put considerable time on the sale of Xmas seals during Decmber so as to have a larger milk fund.

The usual number of physical defects was found among the children. Many have had the defects corrected although we have a large number of cases where the parents cannot afford to have this work done. Three charity cases have been taken care of. Six children have had adenoids and tonsils removed this past month. Eleven cases have had treatment for eye-defects, some having obtained glasses. About fifty children have received dental treatment.

Respectfully submitted, Agnes Thornton, R.N.

The 401 children who have never been immunized are included in the 690 and 481 totals.

We thought the doctors would be interested in the figures resulting from our immunization survey of Columbus school children.

Immunization and immunization "booster" notices, where necessary, have been sent to parents of children in the first three grades of every school for the last two years and the response, while not 100%, was worthwhile.

Where children have never been immunized, special immunization information will be sent to the parents.

Children who received their immunization treatment over five years ago, many ten, and should have their immunization level re-determined by their family doctor, will receive such reminders.

Mrs. Faith Hurford, R.N., School Nurse
