Rules for Underweight Children [Date unknown]

Morning:
1. Arise not earlier than 7:00 a.m.
2. Drink a glass of water on rising.
3. Eat a good breakfast which includes a cooked cereal.
4. Take a mid-morning lunch of milk and crackers followed by a rest period of at least 20 minutes.
5. Eat a warm dinner at noon.

Afternoon:
1. Take an after school lunch of milk and crackers at home, of bread and butter sandwich with apple or orange followed by a rest period of not less than 20 minutes.
2. Play out doors following the rest period, with the body properly protected against inclement weather.
3. Eat a warm supper including milk, bread and butter.

Night:
1. Drink a glass of warm milk at bed time.
2. Go to bed at 8:00 o'clock with windows open, both top and bottom.

General Directions:
1. Wear cork or felt insoles in shoes.
2. Wear part wool stockings and underwear.
3. Take a light weight sweater to school, to wear when the school-room standard temperature of 65 to 68 degrees seems chilly.
4. Wear overshoes in damp weather.
5. Wear warm knickerbockers during winter months (girls).
6. Drink one to two pints of milk each day.
7. Drink no tea nor coffee, and take water freely on rising and between meals.
8. Eat no fried foods nor pastry.
9. Eat plenty of vegetables.
10. Eat some fruit every day, fresh if possible, stewed dried fruit.
11. Eat candy or other sweets only after meals - as dessert.
12. Eat and chew food slowly. Allow 20 minutes for breakfast.
13. Brush teeth before going to bed and before coming to school each day.
14. Take at least two complete baths with warm water and soap each week.
15. Take rest periods lying down quietly.

A full weight child gains normally from 1/2 to 3/4 pounds each month. If an underweight child does not gain at least 2 pounds the first month after observing these rules the parents of such a child should consult their family physician or the school doctor in order to find if the child is suffering from a physical defect or disease which is preventing him from gaining in weight.
