MAGOON/APPLEGARTH

A special thanks to Joanne Roth for providing this information. If you have any comments or have an interest in this family, please contact her.

Shortly after 1870, Harrison Clifton MAGOON (b. Lowell, MA), his wife, Clara M. "APPLEGARTH" Magoon (b. Caradoc, Ontario, Can), his mother, Mehitable Wyman "Clement" Magoon (b. Lebanon, NH), sister, Anna M. Magoon (b. Lowell, MA), and her husband Jeramiah P. EASTON, brothers Charles Edward Magoon (b. Owatonna, Steel Co., MN), Dana Magoon (b. Lowell, MA), and several of the Applegarth line, migrated into the Platte Co., and Nance Co., area of Nebraska. Harrison Clifton, was to become a lawyer and a county Judge, in Nance Co., in 1884, and there was also a H.M. Magoon who was a county coroner there in 1881. Harrison probably started reading and studying law in Platte Co.

On January 28, 1880, Harrison and Clara were selling Platte Co. lands to a Sally A. Sutton, and the document is signed by Ezra Sellers or Fellers, Justice of the Peace. They owned several pieces of land in the Platte Co. area in the 1870's that were Warranty and Patent and Wuit Claim Lands. I know that for awhile they were living in or near the Columbus area. An Albert L. DACK is also buying land from them in 1882. I might mention that Harrison Clifton Magoon also signs his name either Herny C. or Harry C. Magoon. But the Henry C. could also be his father.

While in Platte Co., and Nance County, he and his brother, Charles E. Magoon were fast friends of the Fuller family, and Randall Fuller established the town of Fullerton NE. They had all come from the same area of Minnesota (Steele Co., Rice Co., and Wabasha Co.) Other familes that they are associated with in the Platte Co., area are: Root, Gould, G.D. Mieklejohn, Jon. J. Rickley, John Hauffer, T. Ryan and Chas. Baker.

Later Charles E. Magoon practiced law in Lincoln NE, along with J.J. Pershing who would eventually become the famous General and is also mentioned in Charles E. Magoon's will. Charles E. Magoon, eventually became the first Provisional Governor of both Panama and Cuba after the turn of the century under Pres. Wm. H. Taft. Harrison Clifton, his brother, became the superindendent of Arlington National Cemetery and he and his wife Clara are buried there.

Harrison and Charles's brother Dana Magoon, was the first school teacher in Lost Creek Twp. Platte Co and died Nov. 29, 1878, 27 yrs. From reading the history of that area at that time I know that there was a great flood, and this may have been the cause of his death, possibly. His grave was eventually moved to Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln and laid to rest with Charles E. his brother, and his mother Mehitable Wyman "Clement" Magoon, whose grave had been moved from Center Osippee NH.

There is also a Mabell Applegarth, b. Feb. 27, 1858, to William, and Irena "KELLY" Applegarth of MINN., married a Pram FULLER, and moved to Columbus NE, and he died 1930 in Neb. I am thinking that he could be connected to the above mentioned Randall Fuller, and this Mabell Applegarth is a cousin to my Clara M. "Applegarth" Magoon. Clara Applegarth Magoons parents were Sylvester Applegarth and Eleanor HARRIS, and they may also have moved into the Platte Co., area. And possibly prior to 1870. They are originally from Caradoc, Ontario, CAN., and immigrated into Wabasha Co., MN.

I hope that someday I will be able to find some connections to my lines of MAGOON and APPLEGARTH. They all had children in that area of Nebraska too.
