Herbert Walter Jones, eldest son of Charles Clinton Jones (1867-1925) and Carrie Belle (Novell) Jones (1876-1943) was born on 15 November 1899 in Columbus. He married Viola Bernetta Kusek in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska 16 June 1920. Viola was born 3 February 1900 near Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska, the daughter of Albert George Kusek and Mary Ann (Druz) Kusek. Herbert was operating a streetcar in Lincoln at the time of their marriage. They moved to Columbus to help in the family bakery after his father’s death in 1925. There they built a house on 18th Street just west of 33rd Avenue. Herbert came to feel the bakery could not support his new family, his mother and the three boys left at home. Therefore, they bought and moved in 1928 to a farm nine miles south of Leigh, Nebraska. During the dry years of the 30’s they lost the farm. They then rented a place-east of Platte Center, Nebraska where they raised white-faced cattle with considerable success. Their good fortune allowed them to buy a farm north of Duncan, Nebraska in 1946. Although the farm was quite sandy it was great for pasturing and raising rye and wheat.
When Herbert’s health failed in the 1960’s they sold the farm and moved to Silver Creek. A few years later they moved to Columbus and later to Kearney. Viola learned she had diabetes which resulted in having her leg amputated. She died 10 October 1976 in Kearney, Nebraska and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Columbus.
Herbert married Minnie Tuchel in 1980. They enjoyed going to the Senior Center to sing and eat. He played the bazooka for several years at the center. Minnie died in 1985. He then moved to Columbus living with his daughter, Evelyn and her husband, Robert Gehring for a few years. He then lived with his daughter, Mary and her husband, Leroy Ogden for a year. He moved again to Columbus upon the death of Leroy and when Mary became critically ill with cancer. He spent his last four years in the Columbus Manor. Herbert died 4 November 1992 and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery beside his beloved wife, Viola.
