Columbus Street Directory

In order to properly indicate the location of business houses and residences in Columbus, the following system has been adopted, the plan of numbering being what is known as the "Contal or Philadelphia System." The houses in each block being numbered in a different hundred. Washington avenue is the dividing line for all streets running east and west. The streets running east from Washington av. have East prefixed, as East Eleventh st. and west, as West Eleventh st. Washington avenue is also 100 and is the starting point for all streets running, east or west. Twenty-two feet are allowed to each number, and a number is reserved for that space whether built upon or not. All odd numbers are on the south side of the streets, as 1, 3, 5, etc., with the hundred number of the block prefixed, usually ending with 23, thus: 101, 103, etc., to 23. All even numbers are on the north side of the street, as 2, 4, 6, etc., ending the block with 24. The streets running from the Loup River north, are numbered the same way, the odd numbers commencing on the east side of the street and even numbers on the west.

First Ward includes all of that part of the city lying east of Lewis street, from the Loup River north and east to city limits.
Second Ward includes all that part of the city lying east of Nebraska av., to Lewis street and north of the Loup river to north city limits.
Third Ward inclus [sic] all that part of the city lying west of Nebraska av. and north of the Loup River to north and west city limits.
