Osmond’s Last Civil War Veteran Gone

J. R. Thomas, the last surviving Civil War veteran of Osmond, passed away last Thursday. He had been a resident of that town for over twenty years.

Mr. Thomas was 87 years of age and until the last two years had lived an active life. He came to Osmond from Madison, more than thirty years ago and operated the mill until it burned, after which he engaged in the mercantile business from which he retired only a short time before his health failed. He had been an invalid for the past two years.

He was born in Illinois where he lived until the age of 15 when he came west to Iowa. It was there he married and later enlisted in the Union army serving as a private in Co. A, 44th regiment, Iowa infantry. Three brothers fell in action.

Mr. Thomas lost his wife many years ago. He is survived by three sons, Roy Thomas, Denby, S. D.; Bert Thomas, Eureka, Calif., Frank Thomas, Omaha, and two daughters, Miss Abbie Thomas and Mrs. Lee Osborn, Battle Creek.
