OLSON, Martha

The Holdrege Citizen, Thursday, May 10, 1923; p. 5:4, Holdrege, Phelps County, Nebraska

BELOVED MOTHER CALLED BY DEATH

Mrs. Martha Olson was born in Sweden March 9, 1848, and passed away at her home, 415 Tilden St., last Saturday afternoon at the age of 75 years, 1 month and 19 days.

The health of the departed had been poorly for several years and the earthly tabernacle was finally dissolved and the spirit weary of suffering and longing for rest, went to repose in that House, not made with hands. The end came quite suddenly and somewhat unexpected.

Mrs. Olson when first coming to this country, settled on a homestead in Blandinsville, Ill., from which place she, along with her husband, removed later to Kearney county, Nebr. Here the husband and father passed away about twenty-five years ago. Later Mrs. Olson removed with her family to Holdrege where she has continually resided up until the time of her death.

She was instructed and confirmed in the Christian faith when 16 years of age and joined the Lutheran church of Sweden. She loved the church of Jesus Christ and found great pleasure in attending divine services whenever her condition of health would permit. She would often have her family gather round her bed and she would then repeat her prayers of childhood. She beautifully testified to her trust in Christ and her readiness to depart the night before her death.

She was a most kind and affectionate mother, her first thought being always for the welfare of her children. Her kindness and love will surely never be forgotten, but the flowers she planted will remain unfading, refreshed by the pleasant dews of memory. She is mourned and her loss keenly felt by the four daughters, Mrs. Mary Peterson, Mrs. A. M. Weeks, Christine, and Ida, all of Holdrege; one son, Alfred; nine grand-children and three great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the home on Tilden street on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with Rev. Jas. A. Douglass and Rev. Irvin A. D. Johnson jointly in charge. Singing was furnished by a mixed quartet. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in Prairie Home cemetery.

Mother’s gone, the angels called her;
She has left a vacant chair.
She has gone up to the angels,
Now to dwell forever there.
So, good-bye, you darling mother,
How we’ll miss your smiling face,
How we’ll miss your sweet caresses,
And your tear upon our cheek.

A few more partings o’er
A few more toils, a few more tears,
And we shall weep no more.”
