Here's the house where my mother, Alvina Stein was born. This picture was taken in late 1903 or early 1904 of the family in front of their home with three of their children. (Mother was born in Nov. 1904.) The house was located on the land where the Lincoln air base is now located, so, of course, the house is long gone.

Sitting on the porch is my grandfather, William John Henry Stein, (1871)
In the chair is my grandmother, Mary Rachel Thatcher Stein, (1878)
holding daughter my aunt Lottie Marie Stein (12-26-1902)
The little boy standing is their son, my uncle, Franklin Henry Stein 5-03-1900
The little girl in the small chair is their daughter, my aunt Florence Catherine Stein 10-15-1901

Notice there are two dogs up near the porch behind Aunt Florence.

This is the home of Harvey E. & Dora (Arbuckle) Van Eman of University Place, NE (now part of Lincoln). The home was across the street from Wesleyan University. The Van Eman family, plus several boarders are shown here. On the lower porch are Dr. Archibald E. Turner & his wife, Pearl (Van Eman) Turner. Archie was a Professor of Speech & Drama at the University. Upper right are Harvey & Dora Van Eman.

This is the Franklin Cream Co. Building - larger photo - in Lincoln, NE. The address on the door appears to be "1318" & the lettering on the side of the milk cart reads, "Lancaster Dairy, Wholesale & Retail." My gr.- grandfather, Harvey Van Eman is standing with the 2 ladies in front of the building. This was taken in early 1900s. The hanging sign on the front of the bldg reads, "Louis A. Any details available on the Harmen DeVries family while living in Holland, Lancaster, would be appreciated.
Submitted by Curtis Menning

The first photo is of Harmen (Herman) DeVries who lived in Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska around 1883 - 1886 where his first two children were born. They later moved to Iowa and finally settled in South Dakota during the rush to establish South Dakota as a farming state. He is buried in South Dakota as well as several of his children.

The second photo is of the Harmen (Herman) DeVries family taken later in South Dakota.

Devries Family Top row
Gerrit Devries b: Sep 1878 Pella Iowa
Jane Devries b: 2 Sep 1883 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska (my grandmother)
Everette DeVries b: Feb 1881 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska - occupation driller
Herman DeVries b: 18 Nov 1886 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska

Front row:
Harmen DeVries b: 14 Nov 1842 The Netherlands occupation farmer
John DeVries b: Dec 1891 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska became a farmer
Fennigje Stouwdam b: 10 Jul 1854 Oldebroek, Gelderland, Netherlands

The third photo is of the family of the brother to Harmen DeVries. I am not certain the brother lived in Nebraska but the research on their families is made difficult by the fact that Harmen and his brother were two of triplets. Note the badge and the similar faces on the brothers - but then "we Dutch folks all look alike anyway."

I still have not ascertained precisely who the lady is in the photo. I believe her to be either the Mother, (perhaps a grandmother) of Harmen DeVries and Evert DeVries mentioned on your site.

Notice the photo was actually taken in Lancaster County and was forwarded to me 30 years ago by someone who also had the last name of DeVries, but now believe the original owner of the photo has since deceased and the information as to who she might be has been lost.
