V Surnames VANCE, Margaret 'Peg' 1925-2008 Margaret "Peg" Vance, passed away at age 82 on May 18, 2008 in Portland, OR. Born July 30, 1925, in Lincoln, Neb., Peg spent her youth in Nebraska, graduating first from Lincoln High School, and then from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor's degree, and her master's degree in music. She added her doctorate in music at Columbia University in New York in 1956. Mrs. Vance dedicated the rest of her professional life to teaching and composing. The University of Portland, is where she taught from 1966 to 1989. Outside school, she was the author of more than 100 published musical arrangements and original publications. Married Robert W. Vance Jr. on June 10, 1957, and the couple remained together until his death from complications of kidney disease in 1973. Peg never remarried, but instead dedicated herself to her family, sons, Robert and Miles and later, their wives, Diane and Bonnie and her two grandchildren. She is survived by brother, Jim of Lincoln, Neb.; son, Robert and wife, Diane; son, Miles and wife, Bonnie; and two grandchildren. Born Jan. 27, 1939, in Lincoln, Neb. He served in the Marine Corps for 14 years, including two tours in the Vietnam War. In 1991, he married Linda L. Looney. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Marialani Brown, Celeste Fries, Vonda Mohr and Linda Hall; sons, Richard Vannest Jr., Herbert Vannest and Ken Huskinson; sisters, Delores Crosby, Judy Rosalez, Sharon Shutt and Rosemary Coplin; brothers, David and Larry; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. May Lulu Frances Van Winkle, daughter of James and Sarah Van Winkle was born At Monmouth, Illinois, October 26, 1878, and after a two-week illness passed away at the farm home near Wilsonville, NE, July 8, 1934, at the age of 55 years, 8 months, and 8 days. At an early age, she with her parents moved to Nebraska. Here she was united in marriage to Otto Julius May, April 17, 1895, to which union 7 children were born, all of whom are living. They resided on a farm near Bennet until 1927, when they moved to a farm near Hendley, NE. In 1932, they moved near Wilsonville, where they now reside. She leaves to mourn her passing, a loving husband, 6 sons, Myron and Clarence of Panama, Herman and Harold of Hendley, and Boyne and Burdell of Wilsonville, one daughter, Mrs. George Herren of Hendley, one grandson, Dewey Dean May of Hendley; two brothers, Clarence Van Winkle of Panama and Ira Van Winkle of Kilgore, NE; one sister, Mrs. Maude Atwood of Canby, OR and a host of other relatives and friends.
