Mrs. Solomon will be well [re]membered by a great many of the older residents of this city and they will regret greatly to learn of her passing. LEONARD - SPARROW - Mary Louisa Leonard, daughter of Zephaniah A. Leonard and Marian, his wife, was born in Taunton, Mass. April 18, 1829, and died at the home of her son, W. W. Sparrow, 2440 Q street, Havelock, Neb., Wednesday, July 30, 1919, at 4:37 o'clock p. m. at the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 13 days. She was married to Ebenezer E. Sparrow on January 1, 1856. She leaves to mourn her loss five sons - Edward W. of Hale, Mo.; Fred H. of Brunswick, Neb.; Henry A. of Seattle, Wash.; W. F. of Havelock, and Charles whose whereabouts have been unknown for twenty years. She also leaves six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her husband lost his life in the Civil War, October 22, 1862. She united with the Baptist church in her girlhood days and had led a Christian life until death, although unable to attend church in later years on account of her hearing. Her mother lived to be 92 years of age, her grandmother 102, and an aunt reached the ripe age of 100. John Alden, who died at the age of 102, and Miles Standish, who came to America on the Mayflower, were relatives of hers. The former being an uncle and Miles Standish a second cousin. Her family history is exceptional both in age and lineage. "Pale, withered hands that ten and eighty years Had wrought for others, bathed the hurt of tears Rocked children's cradles, eased the fever smart, Dropped balls of love in many an aching heart, Now stirless, folded like was rose leaves pres't Above the sorrow and silence of her breast. In mute appeal they tell of labors done, And well-earned rest that came at set of sun. As if an angel's kiss the while she slept, Had swept the cobweb wrinkles quite away, And given back the peace of childhood days, And on the lips the faint smile almost said None knew life's secrets but the happy dead. So, gazing where she lay, we knew that pain And parting could not cleave her soul again. And we were sure that they who saw her last In that dim vista which we call the past, Who never knew her old and laid aside, Remembering best the maiden and the bride, Had sprung to greet her with the olden speech, The dear, sweet names no later love can teach. And 'welcome home' they cried, and grasped her hands-- So dwells the mother--in the best of lands." The funeral services were held at the home of her son, W. F. Sparrow, Friday afternoon, at 3:30, conducted by Rev. H. W. Tally of the Christian church. Burial is at Wyuka cemetery. He was educated at Howes Academy, University of Des Moines and Iowa State University. In 1886, after coming to Lincoln, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law in this state thereafter. In about 1898, Mr. Stevens was named deputy county attorney under James L. Caldwell, a position he held for four years. From 1905 to 1924, with the exception of two years, he was justice of the peace in Lincoln. It was said that Judge Stevens tried more than 1,000 cases as justice of the peace, filling some sixty dockets with (?) cases each. In his early years in Lincoln, he was affiliated with the firm of Harwood, Ames & Kelly. Subsequently, he was connected in a practice with Don Love, J. L. T (?)ters and Judge Cochran. He was well known among the group of prominent Lincoln men of the time. In his day, he was the best known lawyer in Lincoln. His almost fifty years of public service and private practice in this city bear out this appraisal. Younger lawyers frequently went to Mr. Stevens for counsel and advice, not only because he had the ability but the willingness to advise and help them. He struggled against physical disabilities for many years and in recent years had been an invalid or semi-invalid. In earlier years he was a member of First Baptist Church and was assistant superintendent of the Sunday school in the 1880's. He had also been a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elks. After several years illness, he died on Monday, July 2. He is survived by a son, William Stevens Jr., of Omaha; a brother, Charles Stevens of Muskogee, OK and a sister, Mrs. Laura Sutherland of Otoe.
