At the age of 14 years he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On June 6, 1857 He was married to Wilhelmina Rueckert, to which union were born eleven children, five of whom are still living; Henry F., Gustave E., Mrs. George Retzlaff, Otto J. and Mrs. W. W. DeWolfe, all of this vicinity. In July, 1870, the family came to America, first locating at Woodford County, Illinois, where they resided for 9 Years. In January, 1879, the family moved to Bennet where they have resided since. Mrs. May preceded her husband in death less than two years ago. He is survived by his five children, 29 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church on Monday, January 27, 1919, with Rev. Haack in charge. Burial was made in the Bennet Cemetery. Submitted by Marilyn Cozza HERMAN E. MAY 1903-1984 (Published in the Clay County News, Sutton, NE, August 30, 1984) Herman E. May, son of Otto J. and Lulu Van Winkle May, was born at Bennet, Nebraska, September 3, 1903, and died at the Henderson Hospital August 23, 1984. He was united in marriage to Kathrine Kellogg on April 13, 1919, at McCook, NE. One daughter, Carol, was born to this union. Formerly of Hendley, NE, they moved to Sutton in April, 1942. He was first employed by Sheridan Chevrolet, then engaged in heavy equipment operation and farming. He is survived by his wife, Kathrine, daughter Carol and husband, Robert Hanger; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey White, York; Jennifer Nolze, Clearwater, NE; Jay, James and Jason White of Sutton; Jill Ahlers, Clearwater, NE; and Teddy Hanger of Sutton; and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, H. B. May of Englewood, CO and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Kohler Chapel on Monday, August 27, with Reverend Sherman Sack officiating and burial in the Sutton Cemetery. His grandsons were casket bearers. Tuesday at the Federated Church in Sutton, and at 2:30 p. m. at The Bennet Community Church. Rev. Krebs of Sutton and Rev. Bloom of Hastings officiated at Sutton and Rev. Bloom at Bennet. Burial was in the Bennet Cemetery with Masonic graveside services. Otto J. May was born August 11, 1876, at Minonk, IL. At the age of two and one-half years he moved to Bennet with his parents where he resided on a farm. He was united in marriage to Lulu Frances VanWinkle on April 17, 1895, at Lincoln. To this union seven children were born. He farmed in the Bennet vicinity until 1927, when the family moved to Wilsonville. Mrs. May passed away at Wilsonville on July 8, 1934. In December, 1936, he was united in marriage to Alta Huff. In 1940, the family moved to Sutton, where he has resided the past 16 years. His business has been a real estate broker and the manufacture of Leal Liniment. Mr. May passed away suddenly at his home Friday morning, June 1, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 20 days. He was a member of the Federated Church in Sutton, and Masonic Lodge No. 94 AF & AM of Bennet. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Thelma, in 1937, and a son, Myron, in 1954. He is survived by his wife, Alta; five sons, Clarence of Bennet, Herman and Boyne of Sutton, Harold of Rifle, Colo. and Burdell of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. Emma DeWolfe of Bennet; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Submitted by Marilyn Cozza WILHELMINA MAY 11 April, 1917 Wilhelmina Rueckert was born in Gangerin, Germany, October 20, 1834. She was Married to Herman May, June 6, 1857, to which union eleven children were born, five of whom are still living: Henry F.; Gustave E.; Mrs. George Retzlaff; Otto J. and Mrs. Emma DeWolfe, all of whom have homes in this vicinity. She was married in Germany and came to the United States, locating at Minonk, IL, in July of 1870, and lived with her family on the old home place south of town, where she died April 11, 1917, at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 21 days. She was a good wife and mother, industrious and patient, an active member of the German Lutheran Church to the last. Funeral services were held at the home at 1 o clock and at the Presbyterian Church at 2 o clock Saturday, with Rev. Haack in charge. Interment was made in the Bennet Cemetery. She leaves to mourn her loss: a husband, a brother and sister at Minonk, IL; three sons; two daughters; thirty grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. McALEER (1933 - 2010) Longtime local resident Judd Ralph McAleer, 77, passed away May 28, 2010. He was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Lincoln, Neb., to William and Elizabeth (Bruntz) McAleer. He moved to the local area as a young boy and graduated from R. A. Long High School in 1951. He married Arleen Tolleson Aug. 29, 1964, in Eugene. She survives him at home.
