The following quote is from the "History of Naponee Nebraska 1869-1976":
"According to an article written by Beulah Melton, daughter of Joe Melton, November 10, 1922, the first
cemetery was west of the present one in the Frank Kelley's pasture, at the north side of his farm. It is
about a half mile west of the present cemetery. A few graves were placed there before the cemetery was
relocated at this present location. markers remain there, however names are not plain and only a few
letters and some of the dates can be read. Mr. Kelly was the father of Grover, Lou, Bill, and Mrs.
Hill, who lives at Franklin.
"We are not sure when the present cemetery was purchased, but in 1881, J.M. Ray's second child, a son,
died in September of that year and he is buried on their homestead.
"The first entry in the cemetery book was May 27, 1897, but it may have been in the 80's when the
present cemetery was purchased. The Cemetery Board in 1897 was: Peter Houtz, Chairman; Isaac Croley,
Secretary; Henry Fox and Robert Dow, Trustees. Board minutes show that Henry Fox made two gates at a
cost of two dollars, which had been erected. Post and wire had been purchased, locust posts were .17 cents
each, cedar posts were .25 cents each, two bunches of wire $6.30, and labor was .50 cents for a half
day. Posts today (1976) costs from $1.90 to $2.50 each. Wire is from $23.00 to $29.00 a roll. Labor is
$2.65 per hour and up.
"March 26, 1906, officers were Peter Houtz, Henry Fox, Robert Dow, J.S. Ray, and Wilson Wilt.
July 1976 officers are George Schnuerle, Chairman; Lyle Bradley, Secretary; Howard Losey, Robert Hauver
and Raymond Graf, Trustees."
I am currently working on walking and transcribing the Naponee Cemetery. I have rows A thru C done. Please stop by again later to see my progress.
