EARLY DAY SETTLERS AWARDED GOLD PIECES
Mrs. R. H. Goodge of Leigh and J. P. Binder of Richland were presented with five dollar gold pieces offered by the committee in charge of the old settlers' picnic for the two oldest resident settlers of Colfax county attending the picnic here last month. The committee was unable to go over the register of the guests until last week wherefore the awarding of the coins was delayed until now. In going over the records of the pioneer settlers it was found that Mrs. Goodge came to Colfax county in 1865, while Mr. Binded [sic] made his debut here in 1868. Below is a partial list of several early day settlers whose names appear in this year's registry, the figures accompanying each name signifying their arrival in the county: Geo. Hanel, in 1869; Anna V. Hanel, 1869; Josie Holan, 1872; J. P. Binder, 1868; G. W. Phelps, 1868; Mrs. Shultz, 1870; Emil Folda, 1869; H. E. Phelps, 1868; Mrs. R. H. Goodge, 1865; Lizzie Aukerman, 1872; John Koza, 1874; Maggie Taylor, 1880.--Clarkson Press.

W. L. Moore, chief engineer at the city power plant, is now able to have his arm out of the sling in which he carried it for two weeks following an accident while on duty. Two weeks ago last Sunday, Mr. Moore caught his right arm in the machinery and suffered a bad cut just below the elbow. The ligaments were not torn as was at first thought, so he will regain the full use of his fingers.

OLD RESIDENTS OF ROGERS LEAVE FOR CALIFORNIA
Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Halstead, pioneer residents of Colfax county, left Sunday for Orroville, California, where they will make their future home. Mr. and Mrs. Halstead spent several winters in California and now have purchased a residence property in Orroville with the intention of making that their permanent home.
Mr. and Mrs. Halstead came to Colfax county in 1868 and took a homestead north of Rogers. Mrs. Halstead and their son ran the farm and Mr. Halstead taught school for a time. Mr. and Mrs. Halstead later moved to Iowa where they resided for a few years. Upon their return to Nebraska they became residents of Rogers where they resided for a number of years. Mr. Halstead was the postmaster at Rogers for several years.
Mr. and Mrs. Halstead have many friend[s] in Colfax county who greatly regret their departure, yet wish them well in their new home.

Rev. J. Pieper, for ten years past priest of the SS. Peter and Paul's parish, Howells, last week resigned his charge, having accepted the appointment as priest at Constance, Nebraska. Rev. H. Buerger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Buerger, long residents of the Olean community succeeds Rev. Pieper in the Howells work. Rev. Pieper has been a strong church worker in the Howells parish and his administration resulted in the erection of one of the finest church edifices in Colfax county.
