I have made an attempt to locate the names of photographers in Colfax County and the approximate time they were in the area. When known, I have included the address of their location. The information following the address is the source of my information. (Thanks, Catherine Renschler for your help!) This does not mean the photographer in question was in the area only during that time period. It is simply a guideline to be used to help in dating photographs you may have. 1947 - Gus E. Lyden, who came to Schuyler as a photographer 37 years ago this month, when he took possession of the studio formerly owned by C.J. Fennell [sic] on Nov. 1, 1910, was a sailor for years before coming to the United States and learning the photograph business. ...
His older brother was located there [Manning, Iowa] -- as a photographer.
...
At Manning, he went to work for his brother in 1895 and for 14 months worked without pay to learn the tricks of the profession. He then set up a studio and with a team travelled over western Iowa as a traveling photographer for five years. He then built one at Pocahantos, Ia., and after a few years sold out, and located at Mapleton, where he sepent[ sic] five years.
After a few months of taking it easy, he came to Schuyler where he bought the property of C.J. Fennel.
