The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:
March 2, 1967 - reprinted April 9, 2014Mr. and Mrs. Henry Durkop, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Durkop, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kock, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Bender, mrs. Violet Boubin, Mrs. Evelyn Boden and Mr. and Mrs. Art Ehlers of Leigh were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Barrett, Sunday evening. All are former neighbors of the Baretts [sic]. A social evening and lunch was enjoyed.
Mrs. George Summers and Nadine drove to Wayne, Sunday. Nadine returned home Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ternus who were weekend guests at the Merlin Preston home in wayne. Mrs. Summers remained at the Preston home until Monday and Linda Preston accompanied her home.
Sunday afternoon, the Prestons, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ternus and Mrs. Summers and Nadine, attended the Mid-winter Concert presented by the students of the Wayne City high school band. Tracy Preston, a freshman, plays the coronet in the band and Ann Preston, a junior, plays a clarinet.Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Bourke and family of Lincoln spent the weekend at the home of Mrs. Lela Larson. Others who were guests of Mrs. Lela Larson at dinner, Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. John A. Larson and family and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Larson and family.
Susie Sander, daughter of Mrs. [sic] and Mrs. Dallas Sander, had an emergency appendectomy, Wednesday night, in the Schuyler Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Pearl Russell, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Agnes Walter, left Friday. Mrs. Walter and Mrs. Charles Ahrens and children of Clarkson took her to Fremont.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Nauenburg and family of Columbus were Sunday guests at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Michaelson and family.
Sunday afternoon visitors at the Charles Malena home were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smejkal and Mrs. Ronald Went and children of Creston.
Mrs. Louise Gernstein of Columbus, Mrs. Werner Sander and Mrs. Ted Engelbart Jr. of Creston went by train to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Friday, to attend the 25th wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Feye, Sunday.
Word as been received from Miss Margaret Brock of Omaha concerning a former Leigh resident, her sister, Mrs. W.W. Rynearson of 2495 Otis Court, Denver, Colorado 80214. Mrs. Rynearson fell on Christmas day and injured her leg, back and arm. She has been confined in bed flat on her back since that time.
Carroll Lowe of Omaha has spent the past two weeks visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.F. Lowe.
Sunday guests at the Oliver Johnson Jr. home were Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hobza and Myron of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Johnson Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Otto Sander of Creston and Mrs. Rudy Hobza.
Sunday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Herink and Tom and Mr. and Mrs. Freddie G. Thalken and family, visited at the Oliver Johnson Jr. home.
Sandra Huisman, student at St. Catherine's School of Nursing in Omaha, spent the weekend with hoe folks.
Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Nebola attended the well drillers convention in Lincoln from Wednesday until Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Morfeld left for their home at Fort Worth, Texas, by plane from Omaha, Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Hake and Mrs. Doris Oeltjen of Creston were Sunday afternoon visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hake and family. Sunday evening visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kumpf and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Franzen.
March 2, 1967 - reprinted April 23, 2014Friends and neighbors gathered at the Marvin Mueller home Friday evening for a housewarming.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Settje, Mike, Mark, Lisa and Dean, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Henke, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Boning, Debbie, Lynette and Patty, Mrs. Robert Ritter, Ronnie and Bonnie, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Eisenmann, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Boning and Lori.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer, Glenn, Debbie and Sheri, all of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Milan Berends, Jeff, Gary and Jeanette of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Asche and Lori, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kudrna, Mr. and Mrs. Helmuth Hollman and Jerry, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reins and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dohmen, Diane, Marilyn and Barbara.
Cards were played for entertainment and a carry in lunch was served.
March 9, 1967 - reprinted April 23, 2014The Leigh Volunteer Fire Department received two calls in the past week. Both call[s] were in the country.
The first call was Wednesday afternoon. Harry Asche had been burning a pile of corn husks when the fire spread to corn piles near by. Unable to extinguish the fire by himself, he called the fire department. The Asche's report was minor damage to the corn.
Saturday morning, the second call was received from Leonard Thalkens, where there was a chimney fire in the home. The interior of the home received smoke damage.Some 200 persons were present at each of the two public hearings last week on possible school reorganization of some 30 districts in Stanton county. Hearings were held at Pilger last Tuesday evening and in Stanton last Thursday afternoon.
The County Reorganization Committee was in charge of the hearings and the various aspects of the plans were discussed at length by committeemen and others from the audience.
The plans, two were presented, with the second omitting several districts, were read and discussed, and it is now expected that the committee will now present one to the state for approval.Mrs. Helmuth Reick was dismissed, Sunday, from the Schuyler Memorial Hospital.
Arnold Loseke remains a patient at the Veterans' hospital in Omaha.
Mrs. Leonard Malena of Creston was dismissed, Saturday, from the hospital in Omaha where she was a patient for several weeks.
Mrs. N.V. Engel was dismissed, Monday, from the Schuyler Memorial Hospital.The annual FFA Sweetheart dance was held Friday evening, March 3, at the school auditorium.
Mike Malena, FFA president, presented a white FFA jacke[t] to Miss Bonnie Molacek, thus naming her FFA Sweetheart. Following the presentation of the jacket, a solo dance was held honoring the new Sweetheart.
Music for the evening was provided by the "Web of Sound," an area group made up of Kenny Schwichtenberg, Mike Malena, Ford Craig, two Schuyler boys and one Clarkson boy.The Izaak walton League of America has presented a certificate of award to the citizens of Leigh in recognition of meritorious service in their interest and participation in Nebraska's Anti-Pollution program by the installation of an approved waste stabilization lagoon system.
The certificate was presented to Mayor Gustave Spanhake and is on display in the Village Office.Capt. and Mrs. Francis Paulus of Wilmington, California, are the parents of a son, born Saturday, March 4. Mrs. Paulus is the former Eileen Imholte of Leigh.
Mrs. Frank Paulus of Omaha is the paternal grandmother; maternal grandmother is Mrs. Frieda Imholte, who left for California Tuesday morning, where she will stay with her daughter and son-in-law.
March 30, 1967 - reprinted May 28, 2014Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Johannes celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary Sunday, having dinner at a local cafe. Honoring them were Pastor and Mrs. George C. Marg, William and Richard, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Johannes, Susan Peggy and Lisa, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rosicky of Lincoln and Kenlon Johannes.
Evening callers joing the Johannes' were Mrs. Arnold Barjenbruch of Omaha, Mrs. Arnold T. Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Olson Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Asche, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Grotelueschen, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hillen, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hillen, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hillen, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hobza Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Grotelueschen, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Franzen and Darwin and Mr. and Mrs. DeForest Jansen of Creston.Easter dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hamernik Jr. and family in Columbus were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Klipphahn and Mrs. Elsie Barjenbruch, all of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hamernik Sr., Columbs; and Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Olson.
The Leigh Fire Department was called out early Wednesday afternoon to put out a weed fire on the Walter Wurdeman and Fred Mary farms.
A cob pile on the Wurdeman farm got away and spread into an adjoining field and traveled towards a barn on the Marty farm. The fire was stopped a very short distance from the barn by the firemen.Mr. and Mrs. Milo Mundil of Clarkson are the parents of a seven pound, 13 ounce son born March 15 at the Schuyler Memorial hospital.
Alois Brauner will return to his home this weekend. He was hospitalized last August when he was injured in a fall. Following his release from the hospital he has spent the winter at the Senior Citizens home in Schuyler.
Roger Lee Motycka was fatally injured Thursday afternoon, March 23, when the tractor he was driving overturned, pinning him beneath. The accident occurred in a field on the family farm one and one-half miles south of Leigh. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Motycka, who were not home at the time of the accident.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 27, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran church. Interment was in the Leigh cemeteyr. Rev. L.E. Mortensen of Shell Creek Lutheran church was in charge of services.
Roger, age 13, was born February 19, 1954, son of Edward and Weta Bruns Motycka at Columbus, Nebraska. He is survived by his parents; brother, Allen of Columbus; sisters, Shirley and Linda, at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Bruns of Schuyler and Mrs. Mary Motycka.A $5,000,000 issue of Colfax County, Nebraska Industrial Bonds was finalized March 23 at the offices of First National Bank & Trust Company of Lincoln. Proceeds of the bonds will be used for building a new beef packing and processing plant of Spencer, Iowa, Packing Company at Schuyler, which will be leased to Spencer under a 25-year lease-purchase agreement.
Gerald L. Pearson, vice-president of Spencer, stated that the plant will be of the most modern design, utilizing the latest in packing plant equipment. The plant will incorporate an automated overhead rail system and a great deal of care has been given to the planning of the product flow throughout the plant in order to achieve maximum efficiency of operations. It will have a slaughter capacity at the rate of 150 head of cattle per hour.In Chicago, Monday and Tuesday of last week for the signing of the bonds were county officials Francis R. O'Brien, Co. Attorney; Frank J. Steinberg, Co. Treasurer; James E. Kramar, Co. Clerk and Commissioners, Ed Ehlers, Al Pimper Sr., and Ernest E. DeBower.
