The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:


January 5, 1956 - reprinted September 9, 2015

There is still time to buy and use Christmas Seals reports Paul Bogett, President of the Nebraska Tuberculosis Association. "A report from the Christmas Seal Chairman shows that we are considerably behind lat year." Mr. Bogett added "According to conservative estimates, approximately 7,000,000 lives have been saved as a result of the nation-wide fight against tuberculosis. We must have additional funds to continue the campaign to wipe out this unnecessary disease."

After a rest during the holidays the Leigh Panhers will get back into action to play Battle Creek on th 6th and Howells on the 13th. Both are home games, plan to attend and boost the boys on to victory.

Relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Hobel Sunday to celebrate Mr. Hobel's 90th birthday. Attending the party were Mr. and Mrs. Nick Claussen of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Hobel, Carolyn and Jeanette, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hobel and Douglas and Mrs. Robert Hobel.
    Mr. Hobel was happy to receive long distance calls from his daughter, Laura, Mar. Adolph Kafka, of Denver, Colorado, and from his son Eddward at New Port Beach, California, during the day.

The annual Mothers March on Polio will take place on Monday night, January 23.
    According to Mrs. J.F. Hubenka, chairman of the drive in Leigh, the entire town will be canvassed between the hours of seven thirty and nine o'clock.
    Mr. Hubenka and her assistants, Mrs. N.F. Lowe and Mrs. W.S. Woodward will select a solicitor for each block in order to facilitate the collections.
    Residents are asked to turn on their porch light and your contributions will be taken.

Several girls enjoyed an ice skating party Sunday afternoon at the Marvin Weber dam, followed by a lunch of hot chili at the Maurice Dasenbrock home.
    Included in the troup were Carolyn Weber, Janet Blum, Diane Ehlers, Susan Dasenbrock, Judy Polenz, Nancy Dasenbrock, Jean Weber and Jeanette Hamann.

Specials on January 13 and 14 Hobel Bros. are 6 cans of tomato soup and 1 pound of Supreme crackers of 93c and 2 lbs. of Velvetta ]sic] Cheese for 79c.

February 9, 1956 - reprinted September 30, 2015

Christmas aboard the Coast Guard Cutter, Winnebago was quite an occasion according to one of the crew members Vernon C. Feye, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Feye.
    When the crew members became aware that their ship would be in port on Christmas Day in Yokosuka, Japan, they wanted to do something special.
    They decided that Christmas wasn't Christmas with out children so they decided to host a Christmas party for an orphanage in town.
    The men of the Winnebago contributed and raised money to buy gifts for each of the children and they collected both winter and summer clothing.
    A gala program was carried out with games, movie cartoons, candy and fruit for all with a huge Christmas dinner to top off the day.

Dance to the music of Ernie Kucera and His Orchestra on February 11th, to honor Mr. and Mrs. Don Hajek on their wedding day, at the Oak Ballroom.

Pillsbury, Betty Crocker and Swansdown cake mixes are on sale at Hobel Bros. 4 pkgs. for $1.00. and Red Sour Cherries are $4.69 for a 25 lb. tin.

Creston was "On the Air" from radio station KMMJ Tuesday, Ted Haas was in town last Tuesday and made a tape recording. Among those interviewed were Kenneth Loseke president of Creston Commercial Club, Robert Schultze, superintendent of schools, Tom Hutton, Creston high coach, several of the high school students, including Lonnie Koch, Faye Oeltjen, Dona Osten and Gerald Hellbusch. Rev. Warren Church, pastor of the St. Peters church, who gave a "Booster" talk for one minute.
    Dr. W.J. Ritter, clerk of the village board, Mrs. John Schmitz, president of the Creston American Legion Auxiliary and Auxiliary vice-president of the 7th district, Mrs. Herman Settje, and Mrs. W.J. Ritter, local correspondent for the Leigh World.

Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Harper entertained at a 12:30 dinner Saturday, January 28, their fortieth wedding anniversary.
    Guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Friscup and family, Mrs. Sarah Jones, Fremont; Arlene Harper and Wray Wentertin, Lincoln; Rev. and Mrs. R. Slacting and children, Mr. and Mrs. Art Anson, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Dale Harper and family.


February 23, [1956] - reprinted September 30, 2015

Miss Marcella Jindra of Clarkson became the bride of Joseph Fichtl on Thursday, Febr. 9, in a double ring ceremony performed at Clarkson by the Rev. Dr. John Filinger at the New Zion Presbyterian Church at 1:30 p.m.
    Miss Jindra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Jindra of Clarkson, Mr. and Mrs. Josef Fichtl of Leigh are the parents of the groom.
    Attending the bride was her sister, Miss Ruth Jindra of Clarkson, Miss Jean Steiner, of Clarkson, a friend of the couple, served as bridesmaid.
    Don Severa was the best man and Robert Jindra, brother of the bride was an attendant.
    Ushers were Charles Suchan of Columbus, brother-in-law of the bride and Adolph Kudera, of Clarkson, brother-in-law of the groom.
    Preceding the ceremony, Arthur Fayman of Clarkson sang "I Love You Truly" and "O Perfect Love." Mrs. Charles Novotny was organist.

Sunday February 12th Betty Tomasek of Clarkson wed Wilbur Dasenbrock of Creston.
    The wedding party included Dorothy Tomasek, Mary Cerv, Richard Dasenbrock and Winton King.
    Arthur Fayman and Vera Balzer sang a duet, "O Perfect Love."
