The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:


January 4, 1951 - reprinted June 9, 2004

Christmas Day dinner guests at Mrs. Emma Reininger-Merle Brown home were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wendt and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reininger and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Reininger and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Deichmann and daughters, Mr. Louis Reininger and Mrs. Anna Deichmann.
    It was also a farewell dinner in honor of Earl Wendt who enlisted, and left Wednesday, December 27th, for the Air Force.
    Each family brought part of the dinner with them.

A farewell party was given in honor of Eugene Herink, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Herink, last Tuesday evening prior to his departure on Wednesday for the Armed Service.

Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational Church at Stanton for Leona Emma Alderman, 35, who passed away in the Hastings Hospital after a brief illness.
    Rev. Samuel Cushing was in charge of the services and interment was in the Stanton Cemetery.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wurdeman on December 27th.
    Mr. and Mrs. Jack Larson are the proud parents of a son born to them on December 27th.


January 11, 1951 - reprinted June 9, 2004

Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hoff entertained at a farewell dinner on Tuesday, honoring their sons, Duane and Malverne, who left for the Navy.
    Those present were former schoolmates of the boys, namely; Arlan and Duane Ehlers, Roland Korte, Carl Meiselbach, LaVern Gernstein, Ernest Spanhake, Harlan and Roland Trotholz, and Leonard Bahns.
    Later in the evening they were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Hespe and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hoff.

A farewell party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bahns for their son, Leonard, and Malverne Hoff, who enlisted in the Navy.

Relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Salak and sons at Schuyler, honoring them at a surprise housewarming party. Mr. and Mrs. Salak and family just recently moved into their new home.
    Mr. and Mrs. Salak were presented with a table lamp as remembrance of the occasion. A dinner, brought by the guests, was served at noon.
    Those present included: Mr. and Mrs. John Langhoff of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Knight and family of Leigh, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hahn of Fremont, and Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Langhoff and family of Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Roberts of Omaha were unable to be present.


January 11, 1951 - reprinted June 16, 2004

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Daniels was baptized in the church services at the Zion Lutheran Church. Rev. E. C. Werner officiated at the baptismal services.
    Mrs. Vernon Hake and Donald Daniels were sponsors for the little girl. She was given the name of Laurel Kay.

LaVern Gernstein was honored at a dinner at the home of his mother, Mrs. Louise Gernstein. LaVern left Leigh on January 3rd for duty in the Armed Forces.
    Guests at dinner included: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lake and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gernstein, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gernstein and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Feye of Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Ahrens and Linda of Columbus, and Mr. and Mrs. Werner Sander and Dennis of Creston.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Groteluschen of Leigh are the parents of a son born to them on January 4th.
    Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Morfeld of Clarkson are the parents of a daughter born to them on January 3rd.
    Mr. and Mrs. Edward Motycka are the proud parents of a daughter born on Friday.
    Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Nitz are the proud parents of a son born on Friday.
    Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Pont are the parents of a daughter, Victoria Elizabeth, born on January 2nd.

Public memorial services were held for the late Frederick L. Spear, attorney and former district judge, who died in Fremont, December 31.
    Judge Spear practiced law at Fremont from 1913 until his death, except for his term on the bench and as a Marine captain overseas in World War I, and was a member of the Fremont law firm of Spear, Lamme and Flory.

Funeral services were held for Mr. August Barjenbruch, 76, a well known resident of the Leigh community.
    The son of the late Henry and Catherine Wilke Barjenbruch was born on September 23, 1874.
    On May 7th, 1903 he married Amalia Kreye at Christ Lutheran church and they established their home on the farm where he was born.
    Mr. Barjenbruch is survived by his wife, one son, Otto, who farms the home place; five daughters, Ida, Olga, Clara and Alvine of Leigh and Mrs. Walter Morlok of Los Angeles, California; five grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Adolf Asche of Leigh.


February 1, 1951 - reprinted June 30, 2004

The Leigh Volunteer Fire Department was called to the Walter Hillen farm three miles west of Leigh on Wednesday evening about 5:30 p.m. after fire was discovered in a combination wash house and shed used to store the winter’s supply of cobs and wood.
    Mr. Hillen estimated that the loss was about $2,00.00 [sic]. Besides the building, a large number of tools, a winters supply of cobs and wood and clothing which was hung in the wash house to dry, were destroyed.

The wedding anniversaries of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Skoda and Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Mohr, which occurred during the month of January, were celebrated when friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Skoda.
    Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Rynearson, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Deichmann and Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Mohr came to help them celebrate the occasion.
    Pinochle was played at two tables. Mrs. Skoda served their guests a delicious lunch at the close of the evening festivities.

Mr. and Mrs. James Spale entertained relatives at a 5 o’clock dinner at their home honoring Mrs. Spale’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fajman, Sr., on their 48th wedding anniversary.
    Three beautiful cakes were main features by Mrs. Spale, one by Mrs. John Ehlers, Jr. and one by Mrs. Wm. C. Weber of Holstein, Iowa. Pictures were taken of the group after which they enjoyed cards and visiting. Those present were Mrs. Wm. C. Weber and Miss Betty Fajman of Holstein, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Reichmuth and family of Lindsay, Mr. and Mrs. John Ehlers and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Folken and family, Mr. Lumir Fajman and sons, honored guests, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fajman Sr. and hosts, Mr. and Mrs. James Spale and family.

Relatives gathered at the Harold Bausch home to help Mr. Bausch celebrate his birthday anniversary.
    The evening was spent playing cards.
    Those who came to help him celebrate this occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thalken, Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. February 1, 1951 - reprinted July 7, 2004

A no-host dinner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Hobel honoring them at a belated wedding anniversary party, which occured in December.
    Places were laid for Mr. and Mrs. Julius Skoda, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hahn, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Meiselbach, Mrs. Herman Johns of Scottsbluff, and hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Hobel, Calvin and Carolyn.
    Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jenny and family, of Norfolk, joined the group later in the evening and joined them at Pinochle.

The Leigh Volunteer Fire Department were called for the second time within a week when, on Tuesday evening at 5:10, they traveled to the farm of Elmer Hollmann located about 14 miles southwest of Leigh.
    A large barn filled with baled hay caught fire about 3:30, earlier in the afternoon from a tank heater nearby the barn. Mr. Hollmann brought the blaze under control at one time and thought he had the fire completely extinguished. Soon after, fire broke out again and Mr. Hollmann called the Columbus Fire Department. This department does not take care of farm fires out of their district and did not answer his call for help.
    Finally at 5:10 p.m. The Leigh Fire Department was called.
    Firemen arriving at the scene found the barn burned to the ground and the baled hay burning furiously threatening to spread the fire to the other buildings. They wet the blaze down and kept it under control until it burned itself out.
    The barn, usually housing livestock, was empty at the time and no livestock was lost in the fire which could be seen for many miles around.

A family gathering was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Polenz on Sunday.
    Those who attended the reunion included: Mr. and Mrs. Claus Ehlers, Wm. Ehlers of Grand Coules, Washington, Mr. and Mrs. John Ehlers and Kathleen of Leigh, Mrs. Walter Gloor, Sr., Jack and JoAnn, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Goor [sic], Jr. and Susan, and Miss JoAnn Meyers, fiancee of Jack Gloor, all of Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. Myrten Wiebold, Harold, Arnold and Sharon of Madison, Mrs. J. C. Sellers of Fort Scott, Kansas, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ehlers, Diane and Billy of Creston.


February 8, 1951 - reprinted July 7, 2004

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bausch celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary.
    Those who came to their home in the evening to help them celebrate the occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bausch, Veronica, Janice and Phillip, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bausch, Judie and Patti Jo, Mrs. Emma Reininger, and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hall.

An outstanding social event was the wedding of Miss Ruby Armstrong, of Howells, to Mr. Robert Sadler on Tuesday afternoon, January 30 at 1:30 at the Congregational Church in Howells.
    The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Theo. Shepard.
    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Armstrong and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Esty Sadler of Leigh.
    The happy young couple will live in Howells.

A blue and white shower was given for Mrs. Gordon Hoff at the home of Mrs. Flossie Held. Mrs. Gordon Korfhage, Verona Schroeder, Mrs. Ray Bakenhus, Mrs. Donald Henke and Miss Velda Held were the hostesses.
    Mrs. Hoff received many lovely gifts. Those present included: Mrs. Herman Neuhaus, Mrs. Andrew Jenny, Mrs. Herman Hertz, Mrs. Henry Thalken, Mrs. Rikus Rosendahl, Mrs. Henry Hefti, Jr., Mrs Gordon Fuhr, Mrs. Dean Vlach, Mrs. Harold Aspinall, Mrs. Ervin Bonner, Mrs. Flossie Held, Velda and Eunice, Mrs. Emil Hoff, Mrs. Lauren Hespe, Mrs. Gerald Held and Mrs. Lyle Sawyer of Humphrey.
    Mrs. Ed Busse, Mrs. Harry Korfhage, and Donna and Shirley Hoff and Mrs. James Rousey sent gifts but were unable to attend.
    Games were played and prizes were won by Mrs. Dean Vlach, Mrs. Lauren Hespe and Mrs. Herman Rahtz.


February 15, 1951 - reprinted June 14, 2004

Pleasantly surprising them, their children, relatives, neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Bahns, to help them celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. The evening was pleasantly spent at playing cards and visiting. Mr. and Mrs. Bahns were presented with a purse of silver as a remembrance of this happy occasion.
    At midnight a tasty lunch, brought by the guests, was served. Three beautiful decorated cakes highlighted the occasion. They were baked and decorated Mrs. Paul Schlautman of Bruno, Mrs. Ludwig Vrba, Mrs. Dennis Bahns and Mrs. Melvin Bahns.
    Those present honoring them on this occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bahns, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bahns, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Molacek and Leonard, Mrs. Barbara Molacek and Mrs. Anna Molacek of Clarkson, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Sobota of Schuyler; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schlautman and family of Bruno; Mrs. Marie Semrad of Howells; Mr. and Mrs. Ludvig Vrba and Victor and Mr. and Mrs. John L. Janda of Clarkson; Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hobza, Sr., Mr. and Mr. Henry Wiechen and Elden and Sharon Nebola, Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Thalken and children, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thalken, Mr. and Mrs. William Thalken and Gary, Mr. and Mrs. J.     Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Weber and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rahtz, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thalken, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thalken, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bausch and family, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Reininger and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wendt and family, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Brown and Alan, Mrs. Emma Reininger and Mr. Louis Reininger.
    The evening was spent playing cards after which a lunch, brought by the guests, was served and enjoyed by all. >[? After receiving complaints on minors playing pool in our local parlors, the Village Board instructed the Village Marshal to warn all pool table owners to refrain from letting children under age play pool.
    Heretofore this law was not enforced. However, it being a state law and also a village ordinance that youths under 18 years of age not to be allowed to play the game, the board after receiving the complaint, issued this warning to table owners.

Miss Helen A. Paulsen, daughter of Mrs. John Paulsen, and Mr. William A. Hekrdle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hekrdle, were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Catholic Church at Stanton on Tuesday, February 6th. The wedding was solemnized at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and the double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. John P. Downey.
    The couple will make their home on a farm south of Stanton.

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Sucha celebrated their silver wedding anniversary and were honored guests at a gathering and party held at the Clubhouse in the afternoon. Mrs. Fred B. Thalken and Mrs. Louis Bures were the hostesses.
    A two tier wedding cake, baked and decorated by Mrs. Fred Thalken, was the highlight of the occasion. It was decorated in rose and silver. Mr. and Mrs. Sucha received a purse of silver and a platform rocker from the guests.
    Rev. E.C. Werner took flash pictures of the couple and the group.
    Cards were played for entertainment. Mrs. Harold Sucha received high prize in Pinochle, Mrs. Robert Stevens, low. High prize in Canasta went to Mrs. George Reininger and low went to Mrs. Harold Aspinall. Mrs. LaVern Thalken won high in Rummy and Mr. Robert Stevens, low.
    Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stevens and Judy, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bausch and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Diechmann and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Geo.     At the close of the afternoon’s celebration, a lunch, brought by the guests, was served.

A pink and blue shower was held for Mrs. Russel McMullin at the home of Mrs. Robert Neuhaus. Miss Ruth McMullin assisted Mrs. Neuhaus as cohostess.
    Games, contests, and cards were played as entertainment. Mrs. McMullin received many nice gifts which she opened at the party. Following this, lunch was served.
    Those present included: Mrs. Otto Pieper, Mrs. Alfred Olson, Mrs. Ella olson, Mrs. Laurence Hillen, Mrs. Fritz Hillen, Mrs. Fred Marty and Mrs. Harold McMullin.


March 8, 1951 - reprinted July 28, 2004

A miscellaneous shower, in honor of Miss Ardath Reichmuth, RN, of Omaha, was held at the clubhouse. Hostesses were Mrs. Robert Pfeifer of Humphrey, Mrs. Alvin Reichmuth and Miss Florence Herink. Assisting were Mrs. Joe Herink, Mrs. John Herink, Mrs. Milo Herink of Columbus, Mrs. Henry Bahns, Mrs. Eddie DeKeere, Mrs. James Kasik, and Mrs. Emil Kasik.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Ella Leonhard, 64, in Columbus.
    Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Thelma Littleman; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Rose of Julesburg, Colorado, and Mrs. Maud Siekman of Mound City, Missouri; two brothers, Arthur Greenlee of Columbus, and Louis Greenlee of St. Joseph, Missouri.
    Her parents, three sisters and two brothers preceed her in death.

The Clarkson School Board advertised for bids for the construction of a new high school building. The bids were opened last Wednesday evening.


March 15, 1951 - reprinted July 28, 2004

The Leigh Volunteer Firemen were called to the Leo Strehle farm, four and a half miles northwest of Leigh, after it was discovered that a hog shed was on fire. The hog barn was burned to the ground. Besides the barn, about 55 small pigs, between two and five weeks old, 4 sows and a wagon partly loaded with feed, some tools and grain were also destroyed. Some other sows were burned but are expected to recover.

As a treat to his family, Victor Jedlicka was host to a special dinner served at Kumpf’s Cafe. Pictures were taken of the group during the course of the meal. Places were set for Mr. and Mrs. Victor Jedlicka and their three children, Charlotte, Bernice, and Alden, Rev. Daniel F. Brick and Lambert Sindelar. The dinner was a complete surprise on his wife and was enjoyed by all.

Twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joe W. Kucera were baptized at the Clarkson Catholic Church by Father Kubesh. They were named Ronald Eugene and Donald Dean.
    Their aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Jedlicka, were the sponsors. After services, relatives and friends gathered at the Veterans Legion Hall at Clarkson where they were treated to a turkey dinner.

Friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Folken to help them celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. The evening was spent playing cards after which a delicious lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Folken received many lovely gifts.
    Those present for this occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Botsch and Mryna Rae, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Folken, Robert and Marjorie Lou, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hahn and Mr. and Mrs. George Botsch, and honored guests, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Folken.
    Before returning to their homes, the guests wished Mr. and Mrs. Folken many more happy anniversaries.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Minna Loseke, 85 of Columbus.
    Mrs. Loseke, resident of Columbus for many years, was born March 25, 1865, in Platte County. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Catherine Hake Lusche. She attended rural schools in Platte County, and on March 19, 1885, was married to Gerhard Loseke at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Shell Creek.
    After their marriage they farmed in Colfax County until 1920 when they retired and moved to Columbus. Mr. Loseke died in June 1937.
    Survivors are: five sons, William and Otto of Leigh, Dave of Denver, Arnold and Walter of Columbus; four daughters, Mrs. Juluis Asche, Mrs. Gus Asche, and Mrs. Elmer Busse of Leigh, and Mrs. Herman Schlueter of Columbus.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hoff are the parents of a son. They have named him Ronald Lee.
    Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Dasenbrock are the parents of a daughter.
    Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Brabec are the parents of a son, born February 24th.


March 22, 1951 - reprinted August 11, 2004

A surprise birthday party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Folken, when relatives and friends came to help Harold celebrate his birthday which occured March 19th.
    Those who came were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fajman, Sr. and Bobby, Mr. and Mrs. James Spale, Rosemary and Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fajman and Gayle, and Mr. Lumir Fajman, Jack and Larry.
    A beautifully decorated cake was brought by Mrs. Joe Fajman, Sr. Mr. Folken received many lovely gifts.
    The evening was spent visiting and playing cards and games after which a delicious lunch, brought by the guests, was served.

Mr. and Mrs. Laddie Kmoch are the parents of a son born on March 12th.

Funeral services were held for Ernest Henke, 50, of Creston. Mr. Henke died at the Lutheran Hospital in Columbus following a year long illness.

After an illness of many months, death came to claim Mrs. Barbara Richtig, born Belohrad, who was a resident of Colfax County for 48 years. She passed away March 2, 1951, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Columbus, where she had been taken ten days ago, following a paralytic stroke. She failed to rally despite every care given her and departed this life at the age of 70 years.

Friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mrs. Lizzie Loseke, of Creston, to help her clebrate her birthday.
    Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Loseke and Katherine, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Loseke, Karen Lu and Nyla Jean, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Theilen and Phyllis, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Theilen and LeRoy, Mr. and Mrs. Trasewald Schuette, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kumpf, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sander, LaVonne and Duane, and Reinhold and Clarence Loseke.
    The evening was spent at cards after which a delicious lunch was served.

Friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman C. Sohl honoring Mrs. Sohl on her birthday anniversary. Canasta was played and the hostess served her guests a tasty lunch at midnight.
    Those present included: Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Thalken and sons, Larry and Wayne, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Daniels, Leland, Gene and Bobby, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Paper, Barbara and Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dolesh, Joey and Gene, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Muhle, Shirley and David, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Grotelueschen and Luella.

Confirmation services were held in Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday morning. Rev. E. C. Werner conducted the services.
    A class of eleven was confirmed. They were; Marjorie Korte, Gladys Marty, Clinton Johannes, Noel Mayer, Melvin Dehning, Victor Olson, Harold Boning, Kenneth Oltmer, Donald Franzen, Ronald Beck, and Thomas Kumpf.

On Monday afternoon, March 19th, Mrs. Otto Asche was honored at a surprise birthday party at her home, given by her daughter, Mrs. Merle Hogendorn.
    Those present were: Mrs. Alvina Barjenbruch, Mrs. John Oldigs, Mrs. Wm. Asche and Lorinda, Mrs. Wm. Loseke, Mrs. Otto Loseke, Mrs. D. E. Tedford, Mrs. Gustave Goetz, and Miss Elisa Hunteman.
    The afternoon was spent at visiting after which a tasty lunch was served by Mrs. Hogendorn.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell McMullin are the parents of a daughter born to them March 25th.
    Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Went are the parents of a son, Wesley Lavern.
    Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Schultz are the parents of a daughter, Barbara Kay.
