The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:
July 7, 1950 - reprinted April 7, 2004On June 22, Miss Elsie Hoffman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hoffman, became the bride of Laurence Hellbusch, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hellbusch, at a double ring ceremony performed at St. John’s Lutheran Church by Rev. Olks. After a short trip to South Dakota, the couple will make their home on a farm south of Creston.
July 14, 1950 - reprinted April 7, 2004At a special meeting held at Madison, of the stockholders, members, and patrons of the Madison Cooperative Creamery in Madison, the voters decided almost unanimously to authorize the Board of Directors to build a new manufacturing plant proposed to be constructed on the Corporation premises at Madison.
The Madison Cooperative Creamery has been an asset to this community serving a large portion of Leigh patrons with fine butter and milk products.
July 21, 1950 - reprinted April 7, 2004The third annual picnic of the LYR Club was held at the Loup Public Power District Cabin in Columbus. After the noon meal, the afternoon was spent visiting and talking over old times.
Mrs. James Hanel, Sr. passed away after suffering a heart attack. Funeral services were held July 21, 1950, at the Presbyterian Church at Clarkson. Burial was in the Clarkson Cemetery.
Funeral services were held for A. Ray Evans, 67 of Snyder, on July 17, 1950, with the Rev. R. R. Pfeiffer of the Immanuel Lutheran church officiating. Mr. Evans is well known in the Leigh community being associated with his son, Jim, in publishing the Leigh World from 1947 to 1949.
Mr. and Mrs. Anton Novak, Sr. were given a surprise party honoring them on their 33rd wedding anniversary. The guests brought the lunch which was served at a late hour. The women played bingo and the men played cards for the diversion of the evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Bennefeld, of Leigh, are the parents of a son born on July 15th.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis H. Prokop are the parents of a daughter, Kay Elizabeth, born on June 17th.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Dittmar Care the parents of a son, David Lawrence, born on July 13th.
A new Hammond saw was installed at the Leigh World Office.
July 28, 1950 - reprinted April 7, 2004Friends and relatives attended the double wedding ceremony at Looking Glass Methodist Church, Newman Grove, July 22, uniting Miss Fleanor Dolesh to Mr. Howard Stone and Miss Stacia Stone to Mr. Leland Steensnes. Mr. and Mrs. James Dolesh are well known here having resided for many years five miles north of Leigh.
August 4, 1950 - reprinted April 14, 2004The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Dasenbrock of Milton, Oregon, was observed at their home where a family dinner was held, followed by a reception on the lawn.
Miss Alice Ternus, who will become the bride of Urban Imholte, Jr., was honored at a kitchen shower at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Urban Imholte, Sr. Miss Ternus received many very nice and useful gifts. Lunch was served to the guests in the afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Daniels are the parents of a son, Robert Leon.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neuhaus at the Lutheran Hospital in Columbus.
Mrs. Josephine Lamplot, sister of J. F. Hubenka, passed away at her home after suffering a heart attack.
Word was received here of the death of Mrs. F. D. Blattner, formerly of Leigh. She is a sister of Henry Engelbart of Leigh.
August 11, 1950 - reprinted April 14, 2004Mrs. Otto Franzen sold her 80 acre farm located about one mile northwest of Leigh. Joe Maliha, Sr. purchased the farm for a consideration of $270.00 an acre. Mrs. Franzen has purchased a lot in Leigh known as the Fred Rabeler lot located south of the J. D. Wurdeman home and intends to build a house on it.
Word was received here of the death of Mrs. Willis Kibler, 80. As May Walling, she came to Leigh in the late ‘70’s, the eldest of a family of six girls, the children of Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Walling. There were five other children born here.
With this sad news, it is learned that another of the early pioneers who helped found and build the village of Leigh, has passed to her reward.John W. Mader, age 65, of Lincoln, passed away at a Lincoln hospital. Mr. Mader, a former resident of the Leigh community, was a carpenter by trade.
August 18, 1950 - reprinted April 14, 2004Miss Emma Holmes, manager of the Leigh Theatre, has purchased all new equipment including all new and modern machines, plus a new screen for the showing of films here.
August 25, 1950 - reprinted April 14, 2004The marriage of Miss Alice Ternus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ternus, to Mr. Urban P. Imholte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Urban J. Imholte of Leigh, was solemnized at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey, August 22, 1950. Father Egbert Huster officated the ceremony.
The new fire truck and equipment was delivered to Leigh from the Luverne Fire Apparatus Co., Luverne, Minnesota. The truck was taken to a lake near Schuyler where it was given a three hour acceptance test before it was accepted by the city and the Leigh Fire Department.
Miss Lois Reichmuth was honored at a miscellaneous shower given her at the Clubhouse.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bruhn are the parents of a son.
September 1, 1950 - reprinted April 14, 2004Miss Donna Jean Jonas, became the bride of Donald Folken August 23, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, northwest of Schuyler.
Rev. E. L. Feyerherm officated at the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Jonas, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Folken.
The couple will make their home on a farm near Schuyler.Mr. and Mrs. Carl Mullenhoff Sr. observed their golden wedding anniversary when over a hundred friends and relatives attended a reception held at their home. The silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Korte was also celebrated at this time.
September 8, 1950 - reprinted April 21, 2004Mr. and Mrs. Edward Korte, celebrating their silver wedding anniversary, were hosts at a dinner given in their honor of this occasion at their home.
The evening was spent socially and at playing cards. A tasty and delicious lunch was served the many midnight guests.Funeral services were held for Mr. Vaclav Kasik, Sr., formerly of Leigh, at St. Mary’s Church in Schuyler where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Victor Herman.
Dr. F. F. Jones, one of Leigh’s oldest businessmen, passed away after being in failing health for the past year.
Funeral services were held at Congregational Church in Leigh with Rev. Leavitt of Crete, former pastor of the Congregational Church here at Leigh, officating at the last rites.Mr. and Mrs. Archie Severin are the parents of a son born August 28th.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Thalken are the parents of a son, Gary.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Groteluschen are the parents of a daughter.
September 15, 1950 - reprinted April 21, 2004Firemen were called to the farm owned by Harold McMullin, known as the August Wiemer farm, about midnight when a garage located on the north side of the farm house caught afire and burned to the ground.
Enrollment in the Leigh Public Schools has increased again this year. The total enrollment this year numbers 157 pupils.
Ruby Ellen Brown was honored at a miscellaneous shower at the Clubhouse in Leigh. The afternoon was spent at various games and contests.
Miss Brown will become the bride of Victor R. Schultze of Lexington.Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hake are the parents of a son, Ervin Earl, born August 22.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Quinn are the parents of a son born on September 6th.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Otte are the parents of a girl, Sandra Jean, born on September 10th.
September 22, 1951 - reprinted April 21, 2004Miss Alvina Jean Sayers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sayers, and Mr. Elmer J. Dostal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed E. Dostal, were united in marriage in a double ring ceremony performed by Rev. Anthony Tuma at Holy Trinity Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Dostal are making their home southeast of Howells on a farm.In a pretty fall wedding solemnized by Rev. Karl Gigstad at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Leigh, Miss Ruby Ellen Brown became the bride of Victor R. Schultze of Lexington, Jebraska, in a double ring service.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Brown of Leigh. The groom is the son of Hans A. Schultze of Lexington.Miss Lois Margaret Reichmuth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reichmuth, was united in marriage to Robert L. Pfeifer, son of Mrs. Fred Pfeifer and the late Fred Pfeifer of Humphrey, in St. Mary’s Church, September 14, 1950. Rev. Daniel F. Brick, pastor, read the Nuptial Mass and officiated at the marriage ceremony.
Upon their return, they will make their home in Humphrey.
September 29, 1950 - reprinted April 28, 2004Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wiese, Sr. of Howells, observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary September 24th. An open house was held at their home.
The couple was married 50 years ago. They have resided in Howells vicinity all except two years of their married life. Their home farm, now operated by their son, Hubert, is 6 miles northwest of Howells. They retired and moved to Howells three years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Wiese have nine children and 21 grandchildren, all living. The children are Frank and Anton, Jr. of Dodge, Ben and Huburt of Howells, Ted of Clarkson, Victor of Leigh, Mrs. Floyd Thrasher of Bellevue, and Mrs. John Haynie of Carson City, Nevada.Miss Carlene Mae Weber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad R. Weber, and Richard J. Greely, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Greely, all of Longview, Washington, were united in marriage September 10, 1950. Rev. John L. Cauble officiated at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Baptismal services were held September 17, for Miss Cheryl Andrea Groteluschen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Groteluschen, at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. E. C. Werner, officiating.
Miss Lois Hollman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Hollman of Columbus, became the bride of Harry Korte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Korte of Columbus, on September 6, at the Christ Lutheran Church, Columbus. The Rev. Martin Bornemann officiated at the double ring ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Phillips, of Lincoln, are the parents of a son, James Davis, born September 20th.
Mr. and Mrs. Norris Asche, of Leigh, are the parents of a son born September 16th.
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Peterson, formerly of Leigh, are the parents of a daughter, Dianne Lynn, born September 16th.
October 6, 1950 - reprinted April 28, 2004Evelyn Beck and Delores Bruns were hostesses on Sunday afternoon to a prenuptial shower, honoring Miss Marian Muhle, who will become the bride of Mr. Arlen Beck on October 14, 1950. The shower was held at Zion Lutheran School basement.
Friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Asche on Tuesday evening, September 26, in celebration of the fifth wedding anniversary. The evening was spent at playing pinochle.
John Hanel died in a car accident about one half mile east of Monroe. It was reported that he died of a broken neck caused when his car crashed into a ditch hitting some cement blocks being used for a bridge.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hanel of Stanton. Mr. Hanel is married and leaves his wife and two small children and a baby born to them the next morning at a Columbus Hospital.Mr. Hugh Mortimer, of the Mortimer Service, in a deal competed this week, sold his business to Mr. James Sedlacek, who will take over its active management October 9.
Rev. E. C. Werner, of Leigh, was elected CROP County Chairman at a meeting held at the Community Room in the Court House in Schuyler. Rev. Karl Gigstad, also of Leigh, was elected County Secretary and Treasurer.
October 13, 1950 - reprinted May 5, 2004Dr. S. W. Brummett was called into the Army on Sunday and his orders to report at Randolph Field, Texas, on October 17th, where he will start in Aviation Medicine as Flight Surgeon.
Arrangements are being made by Dr. Brummett to have Dr. Johnson, Columbus, take over his practice. Miss Lorinda Asche, office girl, will continue to take care of the office so that she may take care of or transfer any or all records of patients received there.
Dr. Brummett, who is now in the regular Army has received the commission of 1st Lieutenant.Otto F. Muhle was honored at a birthday party when relatives and friends came to his home to help him celebrate the occasion.
The evening was enjoyed by all and a delicious lunch was served by the hostess to end the festivities.Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Schroeder entertained friends, honoring Miss Lillian Anderson, of Ekenforde, Germany, who is visiting friends here.
Miss Pearl Wurdeman, daughter of Ernest Wurdeman of Creston, and Harold Fryer, son of Mrs. Elfreda Fryer of Detroit, were married Saturday, September 30, at the Mount Olive Church in Detroit.
Friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mrs. Lizie Loseke to help her son, Reinhold Loseke, celebrate his birthday.
Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sander and Duane of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Engelbart and children, Robert, Irene and Luella of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Trasewald Schuette and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Loseke and Catherine of Richland.
Mr. and Mrs. Seigfeld Loseke and sons of Schuyler, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Loseke and family and Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Muhle and son, Leonard of Richland, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Loseke and daughters, Mr.and Mrs. Wallace Loseke and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kumpf of Leigh and Mrs. Lizie Loseke and Clarence of Creston.
Cards were played with high score going to Mrs. Walter Loseke and low to Mrs. Ed Kumpf. A lunch was served after which the guests departed for their homes.
October 20, 1950 - reprinted May 5, 2004Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Deichmann and Willis, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kumpf, Mrs. Otto Wurdeman attended the wedding of Miss Virginia Kumpf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Kumpf, and George Jerry Welsh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Welsh, at 9 o’clock. Rev. Joseph Autard, pastor of the Holy Ghost Church, Omaha, officiated.
A reception followed in the church parlors. After a brief wedding trip, the couple will live in Omaha.Forty-eight grandmothers, who attended the Grandmothers Tea given by the Leigh Woman’s Club, were welcomed by Mrs. Hugh Mortimer, club president.
Gifts were received by Mrs. Carl Mullenhoff, Sr. for being the oldest grandmother; Mrs. Charles Malena for having the youngest grandchild; and to Mrs. Rudolph Hobza and Mrs. Anna Brock for being grandmothers with the most great grandchildren (4 each).
Each of the grandmothers present received a hanky and favor. Mrs. J. F. Hubenka registered the grandmothers and these autographs will be placed in the Woman’s Club scrapbook.
Following the program, a lunch was served the ladies after which pictures were taken.
October 20, 1950 - reprinted May 12, 2004Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kmoch, Sr., of Leigh, were honored guests at a dinner given by their children at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pacas of Stanton. The occasion being their 48th wedding anniversary. The table was centered by a beautiful anniversary cake, decorated with pastel colored roses and inscribed with the number 48.
Mrs. Kmoch wore a corsage of pink carnations while Mr. Kmoch wore a single pink carnation in his lapel. An enjoyable time was had and all left wishing them many more happy anniversaries.At a beautiful ceremony at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Creston, Miss Marion Margaret Muhle and Arlen H. Beck were united in marriage by Rev. Warren Churchill, pastor of the church. The double ring ceremony was used.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Muhle of Creston, and the groom the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck of Leigh.Mrs. Urban Imholte was honored at a surprise birthday party, when friends and neighbors came to the Imholte home to help her celebrate the occasion.
Pinochle was played as entertainment. A lunch, brought by the guests, was served late in the evening.Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reichmuth and family, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Reichmuth and Bruce, and Norman Herink drove to Humphrey to join relatives and friends in a housewarming party, which was in the nature of a surprise on Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pfeifer. Cards were played and a delicious lunch brought by the guests was enjoyed.
October 27, 1950 - reprinted May 12, 2004Last Sunday night, the following people helped Mr. Adolph Motycka celebrate his birthday: Mr. Delmar Motycka of Rapid City, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Motycka and Allan, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Littleman, Mr. and Mrs. John Motycka, Mrs. Bertha Wahl and son, Walter, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Nitz, Mrs. Frank Nebola and Mavis, and Mr. Alfred Lueschen and Milton.
The evening was spent at playing cards after which Mrs. Adolph Motycka served a delicious lunch.About a hundred interested farmers attended the Massey-Harris demonstration held on a farm southeast of Leigh. Mr Tipton and Mr. Mortimer reported a very successful demonstration and enjoyable afternoon.
The Massey-Harris people said that this demonstration was one of the largest attended than the others they helped put on in the state.Mr. and Mrs. Harold Aspinall are the parents of a son.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Heimann are the parents of a son. Michael Owen, born on October 10.
Mr. and Mrs. John Herink, Jr. are the parents of a son, born to them on Sunday.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Barr on Sunday.
November 3, 1950 - reprinted May 19, 2004The Goodge property now occupied by Moeller’s IGA Store and Alvin Breunig’s Hardware Store was sold to A. E. Breunig in a transaction completed last week.
Adolph Vasek handled the sale.Mr. and Mrs. Don Callies, of Lincoln, sold their home in Leigh to August Claussen in a transaction completed when Mr. Callies came up from Lincoln to complete the sale. J. J. Skoda acted as agent for both parties.
Mr. and Mrs. Claussen now live about 4 miles north of Leigh and they plan to take possession the first of the month.Miss Marilyn Hauk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alois Hauk of Leigh, became the bride of Lavern Brock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Brock of Creston, at 2 p.m. on October 25 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Leigh. The Rev. W.F.V. Churchill officiated at the double ring ceremony.
A reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents. A wedding dance was held at the Clarkson Ballroom on Sunday night honoring the newly wed couple.Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hake, Leigh, are the parents of a daughter born to them on Sunday.
November 10, 1950 - reprinted May 19, 2004Mr. and Mrs. John Severin celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary. Guests during the afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Severin, Mr. and Mrs. James Sedlacek, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. James Sedlacek, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bruns, Norma and Delores, Mr. and Mrs. Herman C. Sohl and family, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Sedlacek and Gary and Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Severin.
The afternoon was spent socially and Mrs. Severin served their guests a tasty lunch late in the afternoon.Relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fajman, Sr. for a seven o’clock dinner honoring Mrs. Gordon Fajman on her birthday anniversary. The evening was spent socially.
Those present for this occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fajman and Gayle, Mr. and Mrs. James Spale and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Folken and family, Mr. Lumir Fajman and sons, and hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fajman.Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hamann, of Leigh, are the parents of a daughter, Marica Kay, born to them on Tuesday, October 31.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Loseke are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday, November 1st.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford McGee are the parents of a son, Billy Joel, born Saturday, November 4th.
November 17, 1950 - reprinted May 26, 2004Miss Loretta Vrba, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Vrba, became the bride of Melvin John Bahns, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bahns, both highly prominent farm families of the Clarkson vicinity, at a pretty fall wedding solemnized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Wilson, Thursday morning, November 9, 1950. Rev. Victor E. Herman officiated at the double ring ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Bahns will establish their home on the groom’s farm southeast of Leigh.Mrs. Lavern Brock was honored ar a miscellaneous shower at the Leigh Woman’s Clubhouse.
The afternoon was spent at playing games after which Mrs. Brock opened her many lovely gifts. The door prize was won by Mrs. Gordon Korfhage.
The hostesses were Mrs. Otto Kurpgeweit and Verna, Mrs. Laurence Hockemeier, Mrs. Gordon Hoessel, Mrs. Ray Bakenhus and Miss Nadine Brock.Friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Olson came to their home on Thursday evening, honoring them on their 45th wedding anniversary which they were celebrating that day, November 9th.
The evening was spent socially with the men playing cards and the ladies at games. A wedding cake, baked by Mrs. Carl Mulenhoff [sic], Sr., Mrs. Robert Hoskinson and Irma Korte and beautifully decorated depicting the occasion, was the highlight of the evening.

November 24, 1950 - reprinted June 2, 2004Miss LaVerna Ann Cech, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Laddie Cech, Howells, became the bride of Mr. Lawrence Fiala, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fiala, Leigh, in a beautiful autumn wedding at St. John’s Catholic church at Howells on Tuesday, November 14, 1950. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Joseph Drbal, pastor of the church.
The groom is an electrician and employed by the Village of Leigh where the bride and groom will make their home.Gerhard Korfhage celebrated his 87th birthday anniversary. Relatives gathered at his home in the evening to help him celebrate the occasion. Cards were played and an enjoyable time was had by everyone present. A lunch was served the guests at the close of the evening.
Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rahtz and Donald, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Henke and Randy, Mr. and Mrs. George Botsch, Mr. and Mrs. George Bruhn, Sr., Mrs. Louisa Correll, Mrs. Minnie Severin, Mrs. Frank Frazen, and Mrs. Anna Zoubek.A surprise birthday party was held for Urban Imholte, Jr. at his home in celebration of his birthday anniversary. Pinochle was played and a tasty lunch was served at a late hour to the guests.

Most of the evening was spent at watching television.Relatives, neighbors, and friends gathered for a husking bee at the Richard Novotny farm where they picked 60 acres of corn. Mr. Novotny is a patient at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha. Nine pickers and a number of tractors, trailers and elevators were brought for the husking bee.

Wendt, Walter Wendt, Maurice Dasenbrock, Frank Smejkal, George Deichmann, Carl Mauch, Richard Holoubek, John Olander, Ed Callies, Harold Folken, Ray Asche, Carl Drahota, Marvin Odenreider, Ed DeKeere, Rudy Vlasak Jr., Curly Schlueter, Elmer Wendt, Julius Lueschen, Joe Dolesh Jr., and Adolf Wurdeman.
Thirteen ladies brought food and helped Mrs. Novotny serve dinner and lunch to the men. They were Mesdames: Marvin Weber, Otto Mackenstadt, Art Mackenstadt, Ed Mackenstadt, Walter Wendt, Joe Dolesh, Jr., Joe Herink, Ed Malena, Maurice Dasenbrock, Leonard Thalken, John Odenreider, Marvin Odenreider and Norbert Odenreider.
Other food was sent by Mrs. Frank Smejkal, Mrs. Erich Wurdeman, Mrs. Ed DeKeere, Mrs. Harold Folken, Mrs. Henry Paper, Mrs. Charlie Malena, Elmer Cinfel and Emil Motycka.
