Orlean Foresters Hosts At Party
A large party was entertained at the Parish Hall at Olean Monday evening when the Sacred Heart Foresters were hosts at a Hard Times social at which Miss Dorothy Schrage and Mr. Loveless were awarded prizes for their "depression" costumes. The guests were entertained at cards during the early part of the evening, high five, 500 and pinochle having furnished entertainment, the 500 prize winners having been Mrs. Geo. Humlicek of Dodge and Mr. Chris Peitzmeier and Mrs. Jos. Vogel and Mrs. Steve Liekhus were awarded honors, respectively in pinochle and high five, the gentleman's names not being known to us. After an excellent lunch served by the wives and daughters of the Foresters, several hours were spent in dancing, music having been provided by Brown's Orchestra of Wisner.

Anniversary and House Warming Celebrated
An item that was overlooked last week was a housewarming at the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Vaclav Melena in the southeast part of this precinct.. They have a fine, commodious and comfortable residence which replaces the home destroyed by fire, and while planning the surprise it was taken in consideration that February 5th was also the 33rd wedding anniversary of the honored couple. The evening was spent at cards followed by a fine lunch.

Local Taxpayers Hold Meeting
About a hundred taxpayers of school District 59 met with the board of education at the Howells School auditorium Wednesday evening at a special meeting called at the request of some of the patrons of the district. A.H. Mestl, president of the board of education, presided. There was a general discussion of school matters and a definite understanding arrived at in effect that the school budget for 1933-34 will be cut to an extent ranging from $2,100 to $2,500 and before adjournment a resolution expressing the confidence of the voters in the board was unanimously passed. The Journal is confident that the meeting was of much benefit and that the interests of the community would be furthered by holding more of such gatherings for the discussion of public problems.

Uhlik-Dostal Wedding and Reception Important Local Pre-Lenten Social Event
A pretty wedding took place Tuesday morning at ten o'clock at St. John's Nep. church when Miss Anna K., daughter of Mrs. Frank Uhlik, and Mr. Louis A. Costal were united in the holy bonds of wedlock. It was a solemn service by Rev. J. Drbal. The music for the processional as well as for the recessional by Mrs. J.W. Koza. The bride was charming in her bridal robes of pure white. Her only ornament was a necklace of pearls, the gift of the groom and her flowers were a shower of sweat peas caught in the ribbons that fell from a beautiful bouquet of fragrant pink and cream bride's roses. Mr. Dostal and his bride were attended by the lady's cousin, Miss Lucille Scheuth of Snyder and his nephew, Mr Leonard Dostal. Mr. Bohumil Uhlik served as usher. The bridesmaid was prettily attired in pale green. A lovely dinner was served at high noon at the near-by home of Mrs. Uhlik, the bride's mother. In the late afternoon the members of St. John's church choir and of the Coca-Cola orchestra were special guests at the supper hour, and the guests at both the noonday and evening banquets were served by Misses Mildred, Helen and Ludmila Dostal, Francis Faltin and Elsie Scheuth. In the evening the Parish hall was crowded with friends of Mr. Dostal and his bride to tender their good wishes, and the hours were whiled away in dancing to the music of the Coca-Cola orchestra.

Guardian Angels Defeat Howells
The Howells basketball team motored to West Point Friday night where they were defeated by the Guardian Angel quintet of that city, the score being 20-18 in an extra period battle. The score at the half was 7-2 in favor of West Point. The second half the Howells team came back fighting and at the end of the game the score was 18-18. In the extra period a Guardian Angel man shot from behind center and "the net flew up". After the ball was thrown up at the center the game ended. Novak on his return to the game led the Howells quintet in scoring with 13 points. The Howells line-up consisted of acting Captain Hron, Vrzak, Srb, Novak, Havelka, Limbach, Vlasak and Blum.

Second and Third Grades
Friday Mr. Srb gave us a very interesting talk on porcupines. We have been busy this week making covers for our scrapbooks. Marchetta Novak and Joey Honcik were absent because of illness this week. The third graders all wrote letters to Miss Lodl to thank her for explaining the telephones to us. Some of us had never talked over phones before.
