The Colfax County Press publishes a weekly column entitled Peeking into the Past, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Colfax County Press files, written by Helen C. Evans. A special thank you to the Colfax County Press for allowing me to reprint those articles! The following are selections from that column:
April 14, 1908 - reprinted August 8, 1984Albert Ristaw and wife have a little son at their home north of town.
John Janda has a good-sized residence about completed on the lots he recently purchased in Cibulka’s addition to Clarkson.
Died, on April 8 at the home of her son, Frank, 4 miles south of town, Mrs. Katie Viktorin, the aged mother of Mrs. Kate Tejkl, Mrs. Anna Kubik and Frank Viktorin.
She had attained the age of 73 years and died from infirmities of old age. From the time she was born in 1835 until in 1876, she lived in Bohemia where she married Frank Viktorin. Her maiden name was Katie Capek.A large crowd attended the funeral of Joseph Kastanek at the New Zion church.
Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Bukacek have been called upon to mourn the death of one of their infant twin sons, who passed away last week at the family home 2 miles east of town.
The Western Telephone Company was organized last week. The company will run their lines west of Clarkson to the section line, thence north one mile, thence west two and a half miles on the Colfax-Stanton county line. There on are 13 members in the company.
Considerable interest was shown in the village election, with an even 100 persons voting. Several candidates received the following: Dr. S. G. Allen 81, Ed. Koza 55, J. D. Wolf 47 and W. J. Moore 16, the first two being elected as village boad members.
Adolph Lukl and Frank Wolf are the inventors of a clevis attachment for which they have made application for a patent. It has been pronounced by all who have seen it as a simple and useful convenience.
By its use any kind of evener can be used on a plow and the depth the plow enters the ground regulated to a nicety.
Messrs. Wolf & Lukl made arrangements with an Omaha firm to manufacture the attachment and will soon place them on sale.
April 21, 1908 - reprinted August 29, 1984Dr. Allen is making arrangements to leave for an extended trip through the states of Oregon and Washington. He will be accompanied by his father-in-law, Mr. Beran of Ord.
Anton Stepanek and wife have a little son at their home, born last Thursday.
A little son of Joseph Karel and wife is seriously ill with a lung fever at the farm home a few miles northwest of town.
Frank Benes is learning the watchmaker’s trade of Theo. Frier. If he succeeds in becoming as good a workman as his instructor, he will be O.K.
A little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hobza of the Wilson precinct vicinity is seriously ill at this writing. Dr. Allen is caring for her.
Chas. Lad is having a building erected on the lots in the rear of the Hotel and as soon as it is completed he will open a photograph gallery in the same.
Emil Blecha returned the fore part of the week from a trip to southwestern Nebraska and eastern Colorado. He says that it is so dry that the winter wheat is suffering much for the want of rain and that the ground is so dry it is impossible to plow.
A special meeting of the voters of school district 58 is to be held at the high school building. The question of providing more school room is to be discussed and voted on. The attendance has so increased that it will be necessary to employ an additional teacher and provide another room.
One plan is to build an addition to the north school building, and another is to vote bonds and build a new school house.
