District 18, Center Township, Butler County, Nebraska
Photos contributed by Christina (Theewen) Rieker
Agnes Phillips née Keefe taught at District 18 (info to come date not currently known) submitted by Patricia Keenan.
Philip and Christina (Zegers) Theewen farmed in Center Twp., and their eight children, Mathew, Gilbert, Marie, Lauretta, Carl, Clara, Harold, and Ethel, all attended District 18 school. Only the two oldest children, Mathew and Gilbert, were attending school in 1910 when these pictures were taken.
This photo postcard, postmarked December 12, 1910, sent to Mathew and Gilbert Theewen, Route 2, David City, NE. Written on the postcard "Hello Boys! How do you like going to school? Your former teacher." (there is no signature) I believe my Dad, Gilbert Theewen, is the eighth from the left, and his brother Mathew Theewen is the tenth from the left. Can we identify the other students?
Back row: ? (teacher), ? girl, gap, ? boy.
1st row: ? girl, ? girl, ? girl, gap, ? boy, ? boy, Gilbert Theewen, ? boy, Mathew Theewen, ? boy.
The second photo, a snapshot, has no writing on it, but it appears to be from the period as above photo. I assume this shows the school house for District 18. I believe that my Dad, Gilbert Theewen, is on the far left, and his brother Mathew Theewen is sixth from the left.
Back row: ? boy, ? (teacher).
1st row: Gilbert Theewen, ? boy, ? girl, ? girl, Mathew Theewen, ? boy, ? girl.
