History of the Van Bummel Family

Henry Van Bummel was born the son of Henry Van Bummel & Katrina Schrowen Van Bummel on January 3, 1848 at Atheithulsen, Nederlan, Holland. Where he grew up to young manhood. At the age of 34 he was united in marriage to Johanna Hendrix (Hendricks) on January 24, 1882. They came to the United States immediately after the marriage on a cattle ship to the United States arriving in February of 1882. They located in Bulter County, Nebraska on a farm near Brainard, Nebraska for twelve years.

Then moving to a farm three miles south and one half mile east of David City where he lived there for thirteen years before passing away on December 29, 1932 at home.

To this union three daughters and three sons were born. The eldest was a daughter named Petronilla Van Bummel born on May 1888. She was baptized on the 20th day of May 1888 at the St. Francis Catholic church in Center. The priest was Rev. H. Bex and the godparents were Anthony Weyzers and Rosina Bongers. On July tenth Petronilla passed away at home. Her burial was at Center with the priest Alois Klein.

The second born was Peter Henry Van Bummel who was born on the fourth day of January 1890 and he was baptized on February 24 at Holy Trinity Brainard. The baptism was done by priest Alois Klein and his godparents were Bernard Clasen and Maria Serto. He passed way on October 4th 1954 in Oregon. His burial was on October 8th at St. Mary's Cemetery in David City. The priest was Alphonse Lisko and the funeral was held at Knott Funeral Home.

The third child born was a girl in the year of 1892. She was buried in the Center Cemtery she passed away at home but find no record as the date of birth nor of any other information such as baptism nor godparents, nor priest.

The fourth child was named Elizabeth Eleonora Van Bummel born on the 7th of April 1894 and was baptized at home on the 12th day of of April at home in danger of death. The priest who baptized her was Alois Klein and the godparents were Leonora Jacobs and Nicolas Helgoth. She was buried along side if her sisters in the Center Catholic Cemetery. Priest at the funeral was Alois Klein.

The fifth born was John Baptist Van Bummel was born on October 26th 1895. He was baptized at Holy Trinity in Brainard. He was baptized by father Alois Klein his godparents were Peter Rutten and Eleonora Gailen. He passed away in the Kansas City Hospital on July 10th 1950 and was buried in the Lantha cemetery on July 13th 1950. The Pastors were Rev. Elrod and Maurice Strater. He passed away from cancer of the esophagus. He had married Laurel Smith Woodworth on March and to this union three children were born. the first born was William David Jr. on April 20, 1924. He lives in California. He was never married he has made arrangements to buried in the cemetery west of Eldorado Springs, MO. (who was William David Sr.?)

DEATH OF MRS. HENRY VANBUMMEL
Johanna Hendrix was born in Holland in 1853 and had she lived until October 6th, she would have reached the age of 81 years. On September 13th at 10:15 in the evening the deceased passed on to relieve her of her intense suffering since she fell and broke her hip two weeks previous. Altho she had been ailing for the past year she was only confined to her home since June of this year. She was a patient sufferer thru all her illness and a kind and lovable woman.
She was united in marriage to Henry Van Bummel on January 26, 1862 in Holland and they immediately came to the United States where they made their home. Mr. Van Bummel passed away on December 29th, 1932, leaving his wife alone. Two sons survive the deceased, They are William and Peter both residing in this city, four children preceded their parents in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Bummel made their home in Butler county since coming to America, going immediately to a farm 1 mile north and a mile west of Brainard where they resided for twelve years and then moved to a farm three miles south and 1 mile east of David City where they resided for 25 years, coming to David City where they spent their retiring years, seventeen years ago.
Mrs. Van Bummel was a devoted member of the St. Mary's Catholic church in this city. Funeral services was conducted from her church at 9:30 Wednesday morning with Father Murphy in charge. Burial took place in the Catholic cemetery in this city.
Pall bearers were Thos. Snee, Harry Kroft, Joe and Theodore Hermsen, Peter Vanderheiden and Albert Bongers.
During the past six months deceased was cared for by her niece Mrs. Nellie Hermanns of Waitsburg, Washington, who remained here until after the services.
Besides the sons and their wives there also left, Mrs. Margaret Louis, now in California, Billy, Glen and Delores Van Bummel all of this city, all grandchildren and Mrs. Hazel Woodsworth, step grandchild, also living in David City also one great grand child, Shirley Lee Louis.
There are several nieces and nephews also surviving.
